Ben Stein: Free James O’Keefe!
Monday, February 01, 2010 at 8:09 am
The conservative celebrity and economist argues for clemency for James O’Keefe because, well, “when was the last time you read about federal charges against a liberal reporter for going undercover?” He contrasts the treatment of O’Keefe — one of four activists currently being investigated for shady behavior in the local office of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) — with the treatment of the New Black Panther Party. He does so while mangling a lot of facts.
“During the last Presidential election,” Stein writes, “a gang of men calling themselves Black Panthers showed up at a polling place in Michigan.” It was in Philadelphia. “They threatened any voter who did not vote for Barack Obama.” They did their stupid visibility outside a heavily Democratic polling place that went 596-13 for Obama.
“Even though it is an unequivocal violation of voting rights laws, it was decided by Obama’s Attorney General, Eric Holder, not to prosecute the case at all.” The decision was made far below Holder, by Associate Attorney General Thomas Perrelli.
Special attention must be paid to Stein’s smarmy closing lines:
Mr. Holder, here is a line from the civil rights struggle I worked in before you were born: We are not afraid. And we’re not going away.
Holder was born in 1951 — he’s only seven years younger than Stein. This rush to portray the attorney general as an overzealous, race-obsessed boy who needs to be disciplined reveals more about Stein than it does about O’Keefe.

True there are some errors about Michgan. But to excuse or minimize the behaviour of armed men at a polling place is disgraceful. The left would be seen as far more credible if they could find in this event justification to fully enforce the law. Those who defend Eric Holder on this one look unreasonable and partisan. Even the democrats in congres aren’t defending Holder on this one. Why should you?

If Stein means “Free James O'Keefe” in the same way he means “Free Credit Report,” I agree completely.

“True there are some errors about Michgan.”
Error number one would be that the incident that Stein (and you) seem to be complaining about occurred in Philadelphia.
Being misinformed about such basic facts makes the complaining seem really uninformed (and thus unreasonable and partisan).

And leaving *the exact same comment* on the Philly Weekly site, where they explain this is about a Philly incident, makes you look even more ignorant.

Who did that? Oh, was it just in your imagination?
The left would be seen as far more credible if they could find in this event justification to fully enforce the law.
What laws have not been fully enforced? Please provide links to evidence supporting your assertion that a crime has been committed, and familiarize yourself with the laws you claim were broken (wingnut websites don't count).
Those who defend Eric Holder on this one look unreasonable and partisan.
Is pointing out that the decision to not pursue the case was not made by Holder, but someone much further down the chain of command at Justice, defending him? How so?
Even the democrats in congres aren’t defending Holder on this one.
What does Congress have to do with criminal prosecution? That's not their job, dufus.
Why should you?
Because Holder didn't do anything wrong? Gee, that was easy.

Ben Stein – housing bubble denier – is not an economist. Yes, he has a bachelors degree in economics but that's all! That does not make him an economist any more than my bachelor degrees make me a mathematician and chemist. In fact I am neither and he is nothng but a bad actor.

Ben Stein is an intellectual clown. He lost all intellectual credibility with Expelled — a movie made about idiots for idiots. His prostitution of just one of the many “free credit report” scams making the rounds of our advertising airwaves is just another brightly-colored balloon for him to carry around in his outsized shoes.
The false equivalence Stein tries to draw between these two events is typical of conservatives — who clearly don't want to be taken seriously in public discourse anymore. A bunch of thugs hanging outside a polling place is not at all like someone infiltrating a Senator's office under a false identity with the purpose of eavesdropping on that Senator's communications. Or, for that matter, is it like dressing up like a fake pimp and faking a videotape in order to embarass someone. No, what O'Keefe did was not only illegal and far above the level of a misdemeanor, but it also shows a clear pattern of this kind of destructive activity and a clear need for it to be stopped by putting Mr. O'Keefe in jail where he can think real good and real hard about the difference between journalism and spying.
In closing, Ben Stein is still a clown; all puffy shoes, silly makeup and fake curly hair. Give him a balloon but for crying out loud keep him away from my kids' birthday party. I wouldn't trust Ben Stein with his own money, let alone anyone I care about.

Ben Stein is a CLOWN. Between his various non-serious movie roles (which are all just him being a humorless jerk and thinking he's a lot funnier than he really is) and his fact-free clowntastic turn in Expelled, to his prostitution of himself selling “Free” credit reports (in my humble opinion, all of those fake “free” credit report companies need to be charged with fraud), Stein has built a career doing whatever he needs to to make money. Other professions are known for this kind of open-ended approach to getting the business done, but most of them are illegal or at least looked down on as morally or ethically challenged.
To accept Stein's apples-to-quasars analogy, it's just like standing around outside a polling place being intimidating, to falsely impersonate a service worker, use that false identity to gain entrance to the offices of a national-level elected official, and attempt to plant a listening device.
Maybe Stein should give O'Keefe a call and explain to him that it takes a lot more than a fake uniform and a pretend set of giant cojones to imitate that guy from Burn Notice. You also actually have to have some actual skills.
But, Stein would have to know jack about anything in order to give advice to O'Keefe. It would be better if he just kept his mouth shut.

I must say that the Liebermanesque self portrayal of Mr Stein as a civil rights advocate is deeply offensive
