Harold Ford to New York: ‘Y’all Talk Funny’

In a dark month for progressives, the nascent and inexplicable New York Senate bid of former Rep. Harold Ford (D-Tenn.) has provided a little levity. Here, for example, is one of the stranger exchanges in a radio interview he did with Fred Dicker.

The two bantered about the difference between New York and Tennessee, with Dicker poking fun at Ford for pronouncing “smear” (as in: “I’ve been the victim of a smear campaign on my position on choice”) as “schmear”, prompting this exchange:

Dicker: “I think schmear is something you put on a bagel.”

Ford: “I’m a little country. I apologize…It’s “smear”, s-m-e-a-r. Y’all talk funny.”

DId he just poke fun at Jews? Schmear is Yiddish, it is not a case of pronunciation.

Pronouncing smear as schmear is a Philly thing, maybe he missed his stop on the train.

He says “schmear” just as Michelle Obama says “deshtroyed” and “parentsh trying” in the recent Haiti aid ad. It is a widely spread phenomenon in African American pronunciation that consonant clusters involving 's' undergo a mutation to 'sh.' This is commonly heard in the word strength: “shtrenth.”

I like Harold Ford. I really hope he is able to pull this off but I think he might have gotten in over his head. There are so many forces stacked against him (particularly Chuckles Schumer) that it would seem to be a herculean task before him. But if anyone can do it, he can. he's a smart guy and a good guy.

Carpetbagger? New York has a bit of a history there: Bobby Kennedy, Hillary Clinton…I don't really think it's a problem. Corporate Democrat? We shall see.

That being said, a lot of people who should know better are predicting that 2010 will be a Republican year. They aren't paying attention. The extremists within that party will only continue to destroy it. Anyone who thinks that 2010 is going to be a Republican year had better think again. The Tea Party knuckleheads are already taking credit for the Massachusetts upset last week and are set (they believe) to take over the party. When they are denied the opportunity to do that, they'll splinter the vote with third or even fourth party uprisings.

How am I so sure of this? It's quite simple, really. These people are not only crazy, they're dumber than doggy dung. It's only a matter of months before their mad house of cards comes crashing down.

He will not get my vote, he is a black man but, for some reasons he seemingly do not want to acknowledge the fact. I checked everything on him and very few places where it is written he is a black, you will find himself breaking down his heritage percentage wise to determine his whiteness. Now he is running again he need the black vote and to convince other he is a honey! People like him are hypocrits, he will never get my vote and a few other has chimed in.
