‘Illinois is Next!’

A great tidbit from Politico’s story on Sen.-elect Scott Brown’s (R-Mass.) short visit to the Hill today.

Moments before Brown walked into [John] McCain’s second floor Russell office, Rep. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) — the GOP front-runner for President Barack Obama’s old Senate seat — came through the crowd of reporters booming, “Illinois is next!” and entered the Arizona senator’s reception room.

McCain helped push both Kirk and Brown into their Senate races. He’s been greatly aided by economic angst, but he’s probably the most successful former presidential candidate — in terms of watching his opponent squirm — since Sen. George McGovern (D-S.D.) got to watch President Nixon implode in the 20 months after his landslide victory.
