Scott Brown: Hey, Maybe Barack Obama Was Born Out of Wedlock
Saturday, January 16, 2010 at 7:50 pm
Democratic candidate Martha Coakley’s Senate campaign in Massachusetts has given up every news cycle this week to a self-inflicted blunder — a fact the National Republican Senatorial Committee happily pointed out to reporters on Friday. But the liberal BlueMassGroup blog has found a video that reflects rather poorly on GOP candidate Scott Brown, in which he joshes with a TV reporter, in 2008, about whether Barack Obama was born out of wedlock.
It’s a fairly unappealing look at Brown before he retooled from a GOP stalwart to a straight-talking “people’s” candidate.

When Barack Obama was born in Honolulu he was a Kenyan citizen and a British subject. He is not a natural born US citizen.

“Barack saw his mother, who was very young and very single when she had him, and he saw her work hard to complete her education and try to raise he and his sister.” ~ Michelle Obama
http://blog.showmeprogress.com/showDiary.do?dia…
“His own mother, she said at the beginning of her remarks, was “very young and very single when she had him.” And, Obama added, he has observed his wife's attempts to reconcile motherhood with her career aspirations.”
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/07/…
Perhaps he got the idea from Michelle Obama?
“Hillary doesn't know what it feels like to be raised by a single poor white mother, Barack does!”
Or maybe from Rev. Wright
“I was raised by a single mother.”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpktgJ6UVuM
Or perhaps he remembered Obama saying he was raised by a poor single mother, which he said quite often.

Did you fail civics in school? Honolulu is in Hawaii. Hawaii is in the United States. http://cli.gs/HjnpV A site for lawyers says: U. S. citizenship can be obtained in one of four ways:
* birth in the United States or its territories
* birth to U.S. citizen parents (called “acquisition” of citizenship)
* naturalization (obtaining citizenship after an application and exam), or
* naturalization of one's parents (called “derivation” of citizenship).
(check out the first way) Consider studying American Civics again, you might be surprised.

Is this there idea of an 11th hour disaster? The left is grasping at straws. Of course the right is no better. Wake me up when there's a real movement out there for the regular guy (spare me the hijacked Teapublican movement). In the mean time, I'd vote Homer Simpson into that seat if it meant the radicals loosing their 60th seat in the Senate. A year from now I say throw all the bums out. But on Tuesday count me among the Republicrap cheerleaders.

Nice try at diversion. Your response is a complete non sequitur. I do not doubt that his US citizenship is a result of his birth in the United States. Remember, Honolulu is in the United States.
Barack Obama suffers from the same flaw that George Washington did: both were British subjects at birth. Neither were natural born US citizens. They both became US citizens by statutes. The Constitution provides an exemption for Washington, because he was born before the adoption of the Constitution. That exemption does not apply to Barack Obama.

Sorry born in America, citizen. Until very recently the government didn't recognize dual citizenship. Even if both parents are not citizens the child born here is.
By you reasoning if I had a child born overseas to 2 American citizens the child is what? According to this site http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_nati… an citizen. Further http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_nati…. 1 parent not one male parent. Women actually count. Now his MOM is American and he was born in America so… American. American citizenship has always been subject to statue so that moots your argument.

dcbikerjohn, huh? How is Obama a British subject? Can you define what a natural born US citizen is? The constitution does not explicitly define what that is. All you are doing is speculating.
When Obama was born in HI, he became a US citizen by right of birth. It's in the 14th amendment of the you know….U.S. constitution.
Comment posted January 16, 2010 @ 9:34 pm
That would be logical if the constitution defined what “natural born” was. It doesn't….however. Since Obama was born in HI (unless you don't believe he was) he is eligible to be POTUS.

This is from the Wiki page you cited and does give the real problem accurately:
“Different rules apply for persons born abroad to one U.S. citizen before November 14, 1986. United States law on this subject changed multiple times throughout the twentieth century, and the law is applicable as it existed at the time of the individual's birth.
For persons born between December 24, 1952 and November 14, 1986, a person is a U.S. citizen if all of the following are true [6]:
1. One of the person's parents was a U.S. citizen when the person in question was born
2. The citizen parent lived at least ten years in the United States before the child's birth;
3. A minimum of 5 of these 10 years in the United States were after the citizen parent's 14th birthday.”
In Obama's case the citizen parent didn't meet the third criteria, the one under the citizen requirements as mandated by congress in 1949. My understanding is that His mother was 18 when he was born. Since his father was a Kenyan and the third requirement wasn't met his citizenship status at birth is up for question, even given his birth in Hawaii.

Washington Independent,
There has never been a marriage certificate produced or proof of marriage. Even Obama said that in his book

Point by point.
For persons born between December 24, 1952 and November 14, 1986, a person is a U.S. citizen if all of the following are true [6]:
President Obama was born August 4, 1961 His birth falls during the time period in question.
__________
1. One of the person's parents was a U.S. citizen when the person in question was born
That would be his mom. There is not age requirement for citizenship if you are born in America. Mom being 18 has no bearing on it.
__________________
2. The citizen parent lived at least ten years in the United States before the child's birth;
Where was mom living for the 10 years before President Obama was born? Hawaii was a state before the President was born. orn in Kansas, Dunham spent her childhood in California, Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas and her teenage years in Mercer Island, Washington, and much of her adult life in Hawaii. Indonesia was after her graduation from University of Hawaii in 1967. As far as I know, Kansas, California, Oklahoma, Texas, and Washington are all states. Moot point requirement fulfilled.
_________________________
3. A minimum of 5 of these 10 years in the United States were after the citizen parent's 14th birthday. She was 14 in 1956. She lived for 5 more years in the U. S. before the President, 56 – 61 = 5 years again, moot point.

Um, since when does anyone hold the default position that they “don't know” if our president's parents were married when they had him? It's not as if Obama himself had ever raised such questions. Only right-wing wackos did so. Right-wing wackos who Scott Brown has clearly been paying a lot of attention to. The public record shows that his parents were married. Anyone who thinks that may not be the case is indulging in conspiracy theories of the nastiest sort.

Just more of the same tired, moronic trash that Repubs regurgitate to make themselves feel better. Obama is President. Nothing you GOP mouthbreathers can say will change that. Birfers are old news.
Now it's a stupid comment on legitimacy. This is why the GOP is destined to fail. If ridiculous statements are all you can come up with, instead of something with SUBSTANCE, you are part of the problem. This country has enough of those.
Brown deserves no more attention than the bug I just stepped on. His comments are no more important than a fart in the wind.

Barack Obama Jr. WAS born out of wedlock.
Barack Obama Sr. and Stanley Ann Dunham were not legally married. BHO Sr. married Kezia Aoka in 1954 and never divorced her. Hawaii does not recognize bigamous marriage so his marriage to Ms. Dunham was a nullity. None of which affects BHO Jr.'s qualifications to be POTUS.
The reason Brown brought up the circumstances of our president's birth was because he was asked about Bristol Palin.

I agree with you entirely that we need substance in our discussion. It's ironic however that you appeal for this, and in the same breath attack Republicans with subjective and childish catchphrases….moronic trash….Birfers……GOP mouthbreahers…fart in the wind.
Read some of the posts below, and you will find that the First Lady of these United States is quoted providing some real substance on this point. You shouldn't be suprised to learn that our President was in fact an illegitimate child (per Michelle Obama). Does that make the President any less of a man? Hell No!!! In fact, learning this makes me have a greater respect for him as a man. As a politician I couldn't disagree with him more regarding fiscal and social issues, but that's another topic. Have a great evening, and I look forward to reading your substance filled posts.

Did you read the statements by Michelle Obama? She said Obama's mother was SINGLE when she had him.
Do you think it possible that Brown heard her, or similar statements, thus getting confused over whether she was married or not? People in the media repleated over and over again that Obama was raised by a poor single mother living on food stamps.

Just another idiotic remark from the stooge for the extreme right that will manage to win the Senate race. The election result will be a backlash against the string of broken promises and inaction by those in the administration and congress. All the voters see is more money for the Wall Street bankers that had a major hand in bring this financial crisis upon the country. The voters see a proposed health care reform plan, that is gutted of any real real reform, and rewards the health insurance corporations with another 33 million customers that will be forced to buy a private product, for the first time in history. The voters see another 30,000 troops inserted into a war, in a country with a corrupt government, in an effort to chase down and kill a band of maniacs, numbering less than 100, that are holed-up in the mountains bordering Afghanistan and Pakistan. The voters see essentially no change in the employment situation, with a real unemployment rate of 17.3 percent. The progressives, young, and independents that have had their hopes dashed are staying home this time. No more votes for the empty rhetoric.

He didn't “josh” he simply said he didn't know when the other person insisted that she was married. This comment by the other person was obviously meant as a dig against Bristol Palin. Scott Brown was comparing Bristol's early pregnancy with Obama's mother, and the other person was trying to sepaerate the two by insisting that Mrs. Obama was married at the time. Senator Brown responded that he didn't know.
And of course from this, we get the more rabid of the uber-Left screaming “birther” and other nonsense.

I agree that some of his policies are suspect, but he hasn't had eight years to screw up this country as Bush had. I leave him to do his job, which doesn't seem to be good enough for some.
Brown is just another example of how bankrupt the GOP is…..He hides behind an independent label, but all know what he really is. I won't predict how MA. turns out, but if MA. can handle obstuctionism, I wish them well.

Why is the marital status of Obama's mother important? The Constitution does not exclude a person from eligibility to be President because of circumstances surrounding his birth except that he must be natural born which means born in the United States (which he was) or have one parent a US citizen (which he did).
The rest of it is simply an attempt to appeal to the “righteous.”
Mr. Brown is an extreme lightweight. Coakley is only marginally better, but in a race with national implications (true gridlock on everything, not just health care) to vote for Brown as a protest is irresponsible. If you agree with him philosophically that's vote for him – if you don't and want to protest something, write a letter to the editor, but vote for Coakley.

Washington and all the framers and leaders who were born in an American colony were Natural Born US citizens because Natural Born just means “born in the country” and they became citizens of one of the 13 original states when the Declaration of Independence was declared.
Like them, Obama is a Natural Born Citizen because he was born in the USA, and the original meaning of Natural Born is simply “born in the country.”
That is why such prominent conservative Senators who are also lawyers as Orren Hatch and Lindsay Graham say that a Natural Born Citizen is simply one who was born in the USA:
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), said:
“Every child born in the United States is a natural-born United States citizen except for the children of diplomats.” (December 11, 2008 letter to constituent)
Senator Orrin G. Hatch (R-UT), said:
“What is a natural born citizen? Clearly, someone born within the United States or one of its territories is a natural born citizen.” (Senate Judiciary Committee hearing hearing on OCTOBER 5, 2004)
Comment posted January 18, 2010 @ 12:40 pm
This is simply wrong. If you are born in the USA, you are a US citizen at birth (except for the children of foreign diplomats). The age of the mother and the citizenship of the father have no effect.
That stems from the 14th amendment, by the way.
So, he was a citizen at birth, and since the original meaning of Natural Born is simply “born in the country,” he is also a Natural Born Citizen.

Obama was not born in Kenya. He was born in Hawaii, as his official birth certificate shows, and the facts on it were repeatedly confirmed by the two officials in Hawaii, members of a Republican governor's administration.
The National Review commented: “The theory that Obama was born in Kenya, that he was smuggled into the U.S., and that his parents somehow hoodwinked Hawaiian authorities into falsely certifying his birth in Oahu, is crazy stuff.”

I am aware of the 14th Amendment. However, things aren't quite as cut and dried as you assume. records seem to indicate that Obama may have been legally adopted by his step-father and given Indonesian citizenship at a time when Indonesia didn't recognize dual citizenship. If that were the case, then Obama's mother gave up his citizenship for him when she allowed the adoption, see Vance v. Terrazas, 444 U.S. 252 (1980).

Obama was born out of wedlock.
Obama's father married a woman in Kenya before he came to the USA to study. Than he got Obama's mother pregnant and married her. The only problem is that he had not divorced his wife in Kenya. The USA does not recognize multiple marriages. His father had entered into a bigamous relationship with his mother.
By law, a bigamous marriage is not a legal marriage. So Obama was born out of wed lock.
I really don't see why people make such a deal denying this. it's no reflection on Obama.

Yes she was single. Her husband had left her. A divorced parent is often called a single parent. As for the words “when she had him,” that could be had as in birth, or it simply could be had as in “she had a child at the time.” In other words, she was saying that Obama's mother was a single mother.
As for the other marriage. Only when a child is born and there is no marriage at all is he born out of marriage. There was both a marriage and a divorce in Hawaii.
Not that it matters.
