So Much for Dick Cheney’s Meme

Dick Cheney says something, Politico uncritically reports it, Obama administration officials wearily refute it. So goes the ritual. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that John Brennan said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that the former vice president is either “willfully mischaracterizing this president’s position” or is “ignorant of the facts” when Cheney says President Obama doesn’t believe the country is at war.
But how about former Bush CIA and National Security Agency chief Mike Hayden? Asked on the same program about Obama’s counterterrorism record, Hayden replied, “I am heartened by the fact that the president consistently says we are at war with al-Qaeda its affiliates.” Former Bush secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff echoed Hayden. Expect neither Cheney’s behavior nor Politico’s to change even slightly.

Fox will continue to run Cheney and his lies as an arm of the extreme right wing does. Lies and the lying liars that tell them.

Yes, maybe Obama can invite these individuals over to the White House for a beer. That worked out so well for him before. Why is it this individual is not being charged as an enemy combatant? Now he has a lawyer and it is a sad state of affairs. Cheney is right, we have an incompetent in the White House.

Rather than blaming each other, I wish the political parties would make America first, not their respective party first.

Cheney is a windbag remnant from a decade ruled by lies. Why should he change his tune when so many republicans want to continue to hear the same old line that has sustained their idiotic beliefs for so long?

Bush and Cheney. Take the 1st initial and we get B.C. That is where Bush and Cheney come from. Why does anyone even bother to report what Bush or Cheney say? They are yesterday's news. The country has moved beyond them. Why can't the media move on?
Comment posted January 3, 2010 @ 12:29 pm
Your idea = single party system
which in turn = totalitarianism
Our bitching and bickering political parties are what allow our democracy to work, believe it or not.
Comment posted January 3, 2010 @ 12:29 pm
And tell me Doc3, how did your cherished Cheney and Bush do with their 8 years in power? They brought this country into two wars with lies, they killed over 4000 of the US soldiers they profess to honor, and they were chicken hawks, refusing to serve themselves. Then they oversaw the destruction of our economy. And you have the nerve to call anyone incompetent. Yo've been into the KoolAid.

His best response when asked his opinion would be to plead the fifth amendment. When you're standing in a hole, quit digging, Mr. Cheney.
Comment posted January 3, 2010 @ 12:34 pm

No, compromise is what makes it work. The B and B are side affects. Slash and burn politics meant to stall any sign of progress under the other party's watch is doing more to hinder the country than anything the cold war opposition could produce. Totalitarianism is the dream of the hardliners.

Now that's not fair! Your charge of using lies to bring us into two wars totally ignores the economic cost of a) not raising the necessary money to pay for the wars, and b) cutting taxes so paying these costs would be impossible.

You expand 073165's true observation beyond recognition, then say the result is wrong.
A two party system will always bitch and bicker, as well as blame each other for any and all of society's ills. But it is not the disagreements that make our republic work, but our ability to set aside smaller goals to work for the success of the larger goals.
I do thank you for using the same tools as Cheney – twisting other people's ideas for their own gain.

Hey Doc3, how is it that you and other ignorant citizens want to destroy America? It seems to me that the “real” patriotic Americans as you and others like you claim to be are digging the hole deeper & deeper for yourselves. Good. You keep digging. Hanging on to everything that got us here under your republican/cheney/bush fiasco is crazy…a sign of ignorance, fear and blatantly corrupt morals & egos. I guess ignorance is a badge of honor for you folks.

Why is Cheney still not in jail? Did you guys see the Frontline episode about the Ground Zero rescuers and their fight to get compensation for their lung problems after Bush/Cheney forced the EPA to lie about air quality at the site? This is not a democracy. No body “represents” your interests. Happy New Year.

The part I don't understand is “they”.
Who are “they”? Iraqis? No not until we went to war with them.
Afghans? Most are illiterate and couldn't touch us if they wanted to.
Bin Laden? Yes…so what exactly did Cheney/Bush do to get rid of Al-qaeda while they were so busy getting our soldiers killed in Iraq? As far as I can tell all they did was to create a new form of “Al-qaeda in Iraq” that didn't even exist before.
Cheney has unfortunately done more to hurt Americans than Bin Laden. It is tragic.
Comment posted January 3, 2010 @ 3:54 pm
President Obama does that because he is ultimately under the power of something called the Constitution. It says that anyone that steps foot on this land's soil (illegal or not) has basic rights: rights to due process, a speedy public trial, amongst other things.
I understand that it seems rather weird to give an obvious terrorist these rights, but the Constitution can't just be ignored whenever we feel like it. It's the supreme law of this land and it's what makes this country (and its inhabitants) better than these extremist scum. So what Mr. Cheney wants to do is both unconstitutional and ultimately illegal.
Comment posted January 3, 2010 @ 4:20 pm
We are no longer 'ignorant of the facts'. We judge Obama not on what he says but what he does if he does anything except party and vacation! More moronic talk by Obama and his III Reich style propaganda machine will be able to deceive us. As Obama promised, he will become very transparent. At least one promise he was unable to break!

John,
Aren't chicken hawks an odd lot of spectators?
What did we, no, they get out of 911? They got oil to $150 a barrel While letting Goldman Sachs trade it 27 times before we paid the top price. They got to funnel our money to their buddies (them) in the private contract sector. A looting of the people never seen before. They got to bundle millions in cash, on a pallet and make it disappear. All because making people like Billy scared works.
They allowed and approved of an unregulated wall street that led to a looting of the people, from another sector of our government.
If I didn't know better, I'd say that these people/enemies of the middle class, WANTED and expected us to end up poor and destitute and put the bulk of our free flowing cash out of service. Any one that didn't see what just happened in recent history, isn't paying attention.
Comment posted January 3, 2010 @ 4:50 pm
Cheney should follow Bush who replied when asked to comment on Obama thus “I think the president deserves my silence”. Being a president is not easy (especially when you have Cheney as a vicepresident), and I am sure that would have weighed on Bush when he made that statement.
Comment posted January 3, 2010 @ 5:02 pm
No, sorry, the Constitution does not say that.
The Consitution's protections are clearly provided to the citizenry of the United States, not anyone who happens to be here, and especially not some enemies coming here to attack us.
Right from the first line: We the people of the United States…
We'd have never won World War II if the goal was to apprehend and try the pilots who bombed Pearl Harbor.
The extension of our constitutional rights to non-citizen visitors is a priviledge, earned by their respect for our laws and the mutual good will between friendly nations. It is not enshriined in the Constitution.
Hence, when the FBI caught German saboteurs in the US in WWII, after military tribunals, they were executed. Lawfully.

Cheney has not changed his modus operandi one iota. He is still trying to destroy this country just like has was when he was in power and very nearly succeeded. Thank God we have a true Patriot for Commander In Chief now, who is trying to fight the war with wisdom instead of doing more harm than good, as happened in the Bush/Cheney era. The sad thing is, not only does Obama have to defend us against foreign enemies, but the vast amount of domestic ones, from Dick Armey's teabaggers and conspiracy theorist racist radicals stockpiling weapons in bunkers, much of the GOP, Palin, the talking heads in the media like Jones, Beck and Limbaugh, to the former VP himself, who would love nothing more than to see this great country fall to its knees in order to further their own causes.
Comment posted January 3, 2010 @ 5:39 pm
Swami, its not that clear. There is not anything in the constitution that limits the rights of the accused in the sixth amendment to just citizens. You're interpreting that because the constitution was written by “We the people”, that its provisions must only apply to citizens. You must be a huge fan of judicial interpretation?
Comment posted January 3, 2010 @ 5:47 pm
Nicely said swami but not quite true…
Please look at Boumediene v. Bush. The SC ruled that certain parts of habeas rites apply to even enemy combatants…that may not even be in the US. (That case was originally aimed at Guantanamo Bay, but it's implications were quite powerful). This immediately kills the latter part of your argument, as well as some from the first part.
Re: the implications of to whom the Constitution applies to:
If you look at it from a strictly constitutional point of view, the Constitution does not apply to any American, non citizen, animal, alien, etc. It applies to the Federal Government. The Constitution tells the government what it cannot do, and how to go about doing the things that it has to do (ie elections).
Here's the technicality: the Constitution in no where states how there are any distinctions between the crimes of citizens vs the crimes of non citizens. In simple terms, this means that in the eyes of the Constitution, until a suspected terrorist is given an impartial trial, we do not know whether he is a terrorist…or if he is even a non citizen. Now this sounds really pretty stupid, but according to the way that the Constitution has been looked at so far by the Supreme Court, this is the current view.
Also: regarding the We the people argument… This was assumed to apply to everyone on US soil by the precedent set by Johnson vs Eisentragr (1950?). The case was regarding German Nazis being tried by US courts (can't recall exact details). The court stated that it was the aliens presence on territorial jurisdiction that gave the Judiciary the power to act. This basically meant that anyone on this soil would enjoy the basic rights set up by the Constitution.
Please don't think that I'm arguing with you Swami. I see what you mean by that last sentence, and agree with it, but I'm just going by the precedents set by the Supreme Court. The Constitution is such a complex document that its meaning changes with every case that the SC listens to–> Allows for a very open interpretation, but it's the SC's view that ultimately matters.

Apparently you are one of those ignorant morans supporters left over from the last administration. I wish you, Dick Cheney, and your kind would SHUT UP as you had 8 years to fix everything and all you did was leave behind a F_CKING MESS. Let me see….what legacy did they leave behind? Oh yea, a huge deficit from a war based upon false intel – let's not forget they didn't even succeed in stopping terrorism (yep, left it for the next administration to clean up!), cuddled large oil corporations in private meetings behind closed doors so they could continue to line their own pockets, couldn't even accept that global warning DOES exists even when scientists with MUCH MUCH more education told them so (again left that burden for the next administration and our younger generation to handle), then there's that whole recession thing where millions lost their jobs b/c of their own mismanagment of our government, and finally cost the average joe billions of dollars to rescue the banking and lending industry to keep us from going in to a full blown DEPRESSION! Yes, I would be proud of those idiots and their accomplishments if I was you!

This idea of sides is part of the problem. In America we think it convenient to think of things in terms of sporting events, with one team against another. The unfortunate thing we don't realize is that we are fighting amongst ourselves, when we should be working together.
Humans are a social species, one that could not have come as far as we did were it not the the help of other humans. Yet, in contemporary times, we are ignorant to this fact and choose instead to fight the very force that allowed us to rise to where we are.
If we want to advance further as a species, we need to start working together again.

Do I wonder why I'm safe? Hell no! I wonder how and found out how we became a corporate fascist country. I can say muslim extremists. I can also say christian extremists.
Do YOU ever wonder why they hate us? It's because the wealthy war mongers want it that way. We should leave them alone and protect our borders, period.

Billy-
Don't forget that it was us that initially gave “them” the training and the weapons. Bin Laden was originally trained by the CIA. Do you deny that?
As long as people exist, they will always have differences with each other. This means that there will always be conflict. Now the US is a powerful country but that does not mean that we can start a god damned war with everyone that we don't like. We have to correct the root of the problem to solve these issues, and what war does is temporarily bandage up the enemy so that they will just take longer to come after us. See the good that 8 years of war in Iraq and Afghanistan have done?
Also to classify a whole class of people as being an enemy is beyond stupid- Not all Muslims are bad people. The problem is that a small amount of extremists idiots with guns that happen to be Muslim are the ones that make the most noise.
Kind of sounds like what's happening in this country right now. If a foreigner were to see the likes of your type (Billy) on the TV, they would by your logic think that all of America is filled with racist and mentally challenged idiots that gobble up whatever the hell they hear on the TV. Indeed, the actual people that make this country great would be covered up by all the noise that idiots like you make.
Isn't irony great?

Wasn't Dick Cheney hiding in his bunker while President Bush declared “Mission Accomplished”? The Bush/Cheney regime created this mess. Instead of concentrating on Al Queda and their protectors, the Taliban, most of the war resources were directed at Iraq. Sadam Hussein viewed both as enemies, and would always come down hard whenever Al Queda or the Taliban attempted to establish a presence in Iraq. I assume that Cheney wanted his so-called “blind trust” investments in Halliburton to do well at the expense of our soldiers. Where is Halliburton based today? Halliburton moved its corporate headquarters from Houston to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

And then you have people like my husband and myself who are well educated, have years of experience, and who are over 50, in my case. We cannot even get a job interview despite sending out thousands of resumes in the last two years. Most places do not even acknowledge the receipt of the resumes. I am disabled, so I am dependent on Social Security right now, and I understand that these benefits would be available if the GOP had not used the SS Trust fund as their personal piggy bank to support their wars and idiotic economic policies. Now they want the next generation to put their Social Security into the stock market!?! Their biggest problem is that no one is hiring these younger workers either.

FDR LED us into war? You mean a long standing victory, right? What does THAT have to do with this constant stick poking at the oil rich middle east? Apples and oranges, clown.

Chicken sheep, peacnick doesn't mean we can't defend ourselves. Matter of fact, we can out smart guys like you with your narrow mind, all day, every day. Hell, I could probably kick your ass inside of 3 minutes. Stay home, shut up and move on.

I was truly hesitant to read your post the first time I saw the layout of your blog. But I was greatly astounded on the post you have published. This is what I’ve been searching for. I learned so much about it. It’s very unique and exceptional. I really enjoyed every bit of it. Nice work!
