BREAKING: Max Baucus Mumbles Occasionally

By

So, which respectable media outlets actually ran with the completely baseless, Drudge-driven “Max Baucus was drunk” smear? I count the Los Angeles Times (whose blogger Andrew Malcolm is basically a funnel for Drudge), The Charleston Daily Mail, The Palm Beach Post, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Atlantic, and, inevitably, Fox Nation. I see that the National Legal and Public Policy Center got in on the fun; “promoting ethics in public life” includes, apparently, accusing people of public drunkenness without solid evidence.

This seems like a slow-news-week joke story to most people, but I find it truly bizarre that this “story” took off. It’s like one of those photos that catches a celebrity at a bad angle and is run in the National Enquirer as proof that So-and-So has ballooned to 200 pounds. Actually, it’s sillier than that, because Baucus talks like this all the time. Here’s a December 2008 interview with Baucus in which he discusses “mil’income tax cuts.”

And here’s a lengthy interview in which he describes someone he “saw’er in person yest’day.”

My point is that Baucus mumbles occasionally. OK, a lot. Accusing him of being drunk on the job, without evidence, is shameful, and I’m flabbergasted at the number of journalists who are doing it.

He was doing more than just mumbling, he was slurring his speech. I looked at another one of his appearances and he wasn't doing that. That doesn't mean that Weigel isn't right; only those who've heard him speak many times would be able to do that. For instance, most people could tell if Arnie or BHO was drunk.

And, when it comes to being “flabbergasted” at “shameful” behavior, what do we call someone who writes about someone else and then refuses to print their response? What do we call someone who has no concern for the standard journalistic rule of a right of reply? We call that person a Dave Weigel. Click the link for what he doesn't want his readers to see.

I know it must insult your liberal sensitivites that some other journalists have the nerve to print the truth about a Democrat.

There is mumbling and there is drunk. He was drunk. He was slurring his speech, he was incoherent in the speech. You may not like it, but the man was drunk or just had a stroke.

His slight mumbling here does not at all compare to his drunken performance of Dec. 22nd.

He does however look jaundiced. Gotta close-up of his big red nose?

C'mon! Bacchus, oops, I mean Baucus, is clearly as drunk as a skunk in that video. Maybe he needs to do less celebrating with his girlfriends and sober up?

Journalists Suck

Why do liberal journalists ALWAYS cover up for liberal politicians? I mean, we all know that you threw any sense of propriety out the window with the advent of the Obama campaign, but you could at least TRY to look unbiased. That's like ABC News bragging about Golodryga marrying an Obama administration official, they don't even BOTHER to conceal their tightly-forged affiliation with the administration.

Absolutely. People like David Weigel (any relation to Teri?) need to stop covering up for these crooked, degenerate politicians and help in the good fight against government corruption.

Stop kissing the asses of Democrats and that Communist Muslim Nazi Obama.

I have known of Max Baucus when he emerged on the political scene in 1975. He campaigned throughout western Montana walking from door to door. I listened to him at two high school graduation speeches. He has always been a poor speaker and his mumbling and stuttering interferes with his message. However he is sincere and he has worked tirelessly for the State of Montana and our Nation.

I have read comments about him being drunk as he spoke from the Senate floor and because he is in the political spotlight many people are taking this as fact. I don't understand how a person can run marathons and ultra-marathons as Max does and be drunk; he simply does not have the time.

As much dirt there is to shovel out there you'll be hard pressed to find much on Max.

“…Baucus talks like this all the time.”

Dude, get your hearing checked. This is apples and oranges. My seven year old can tell the difference between stammering and this slurring and rambling incoherent diatribe. Baucus is totally tanked, with BAC % in the 0.11 to 0.20 range (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_alcohol_content). You must live on the banks of a river called de Nile.

I don't know … The “quality” of his mumbling on the Senate floor sure appears “worse.” And no, I did not listen all the way through. Maybe it's a speech issue ?? If so, this should be well known on the Hill. Shouldn't be that hard to sort this one out
