The former North Carolina senator kept himself in the spotlight as John Kerry’s running mate in 2004 and as a candidate for president in 2008. But his 2008 bid was tainted by reports of an extramarital affair. In 2009, the unwelcome attention kept coming. A former aide accused Edwards of fathering Edwards’ mistress’ child and federal investigators began searching for campaign spending violations in Edwards’ past.
