Leaders in Copenhagen Reach Deal
Friday, December 18, 2009 at 4:23 pm
World leaders in Copenhagen have reached a climate deal, albeit one that leaves many questions unresolved, The New York Times reports.
The breakthrough occurred after a dramatic incident in which President Obama “burst into a meeting of the Chinese, Indian and Brazilian leaders” over their objections, according to administration officials. One of the officials said the deal was “not sufficient to combat the threat of climate change, but it’s an important first step.”
Details are still hazy, but the Times reports that it does not include the anticipated goal of a binding international treaty by the end of next year.
Obama will hold a press conference at 4:30 ET; livestream here.
