Obama Administration to Announce Gitmo Detainees’ Move to Illinois Tuesday
Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 8:06 am
Jake Tapper at ABC News reports that the Obama administration will announce on Tuesday that at least some Guantanamo Bay detainees are headed to the federal prison in Thomson, Ill. Just how many of the inmates at Thomson will come from the Guantanamo Bay prison is unclear, though.
As I’ve noted before, prominent Illinois Democrats such as Sen. Dick Durbin have been strong supporters of the move. Congressional Republicans, on the other hand, led by Rep. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), the GOP front-runner for Obama’s old Senate seat, have strongly opposed transferring terror suspects to their state.
Conservative Republicans and “tea party” activists are already planning their protests.
