In lieu of another “War on Christmas” panic, it seems that the conservative culture war of December 2009 will be over James Cameron’s much-hyped, almost-as-much-anticipated blockbuster “Avatar.” John Nolte, the editor of Andrew Breitbart’s influential “Big Hollywood” site, was first out of the gate with a review that accuses Cameron of making an anti-war screed, a sci-fi version of Operation Iraqi Freedom with evil earthlings killing aliens for their energy resources.
Think of “Avatar” as “Death Wish 5” for leftists. A simplistic, revisionist revenge fantasy where if you freakin’ hate the bad guys (America), you’re able to forgive the by-the-numbers predictability of it all and still get off watching them get what they got coming.
Nolte’s review is getting around on the right; the odds of this sinking an action film with glowing reviews from the critics still seem slim.

Cameron's from Canada, originally, so I guess it's only natural for him to be insufficiently pro war and lacking the proper fetishization of the military.

I like Nolte's implied admission that Death Wish 5 is a conservative favorite. They have such great taste.
I also like his equating the simplistic plot of a special-effects heavy action blockbuster to that of the fourth Z-grade Charles Bronson revenge fantasy sequel. Here's a hint, John: most people aren't seeing Avatar for the plot.

Plot of the first Matrix film: Everything you think you know is an an illusion manufactured and enforced by white men in suits. A few individuals, most of them people of color, understand this.
Plot of the Star Wars prequel trilogy: A democratically elected leader concocts an attack on his own government so he can launch a war and gain dictatorial powers.

Only a fool would use this as an excuse and believe it. This Avatar film, like so many before it, is about the director's mindset and message. James Cameron has himself said time and time again that he is anti war, anti american, and pro global warming. This movie does not disguise him. I love James Cameron movies, and even a Cameron fan can see this is WAY more than just a fantasy film. Get your head out of your butt.
