Palin’s Coattails

Cherilyn Eagar, a long-shot candidate for U.S. Senate in Utah, tries to grab onto them with an announcement that she’ll have a historic meeting with the former governor on the Salt Lake City jag of her book tour. From the press release:
Governor Palin will make one stop in Utah on her book tour, signing copies at the Salt Lake City Costco on December 9th, from noon to 3:00 pm. Cherilyn Eagar, dubbed “Utah’s Sarah Palin” by local media, will be there to support Palin’s book tour and looks forward to meeting the former Alaska chief executive…
“Governor Palin’s election as vice president would have added a new and powerful voice for conservative women, for conservatism in general and for the traditional family values that most Utahns cherish,” [said Eagar.] “We are so pleased she is coming here to Utah.”
Eagar is challenging Sen. Bob Bennett (R-Utah), who may really be vulnerable thanks to the convention re-nomination process in the state.

Can't Eagar endorse what Palin is doing?
If Palin endorses her or not, why the flack?

Weigel, you need to do your homework. Cherilyn Eagar isn't a long-shot candidate, she is the front runner. A new poll shows anti-Bennett sentiment at almost 3 of 5 Utahns. Among his challengers, there are five announced or probable Republicans. Eagar leads them all. She's been working for six months, has already received a national endorsement and will receive more.
Also, reread that press release (they're all reprinted on her website). Eagar didn't announce a historic meeting, getting a book signed is anything but historic. She isn't trying for coattails; Palin isn't running for anything, she has no coattails. Eagar is out to support and align herself with a fellow conservative. That's PoliSci 101, everybody does it, unless they're stupid, and Eagar isn't stupid. She is a long-time Republican, who's been active more than 30 years in community and national efforts to support true conservative values. She's what Utah wants.
