Little Green Footballs’ Charles Johnson Breaks With the Right

Way back in April, I talked to Charles Johnson of Little Green Footballs about his very public arguments with fellow “warbloggers” whom, he believed, had gone off the rails. Johnson told me that he’d never considered himself a “conservative.” But last night he put up a scorching post announcing an official break from “the right.” Among his reasons: “Anti-Islamic bigotry that goes far beyond simply criticizing radical Islam, into support for fascism, violence, and genocide” and the mainstreaming of fringe attacks which he denotes as “witch doctor pictures, tea parties, Birthers, Michelle Malkin, Fox News, World Net Daily, Newsmax, and every other right wing source.”

It’s an interesting post to read today as the president announces a troop escalation in Afghanistan — and much of the media Johnson denounces is attacking the decision anyway.

Yeah, he did that a while back when he decided all dissent was bannable and anyone who linked to a site that had links to another site that had comments that he didn't like was a bannable offense… I'm surprised he still has commenters.

But hey, at least he's still a conservative. Defensing ACORN, promoting climate change bills to damage the economy, deciding that faked science is good enough, pushing faked quotes to attack Rush Limbaugh then stating they “might be true”, accusing conservatives of being behind the murder of the census worker… you know, all that conservative stuff he does.

If you can't constantly attack all conservative sites and positions; how would people know you're a conservative, right?

But yes, he's correct and everyone else on the right has “gone off the rails”. When it looks to you like everyone else in the world is crazy; clearly you're perfectly 100% correct and not at all insane… right? Not even a pause for concern that everyone else seems to disagree… that just means they're all RACIST!1!eleventy

Or something… personally I'd probably understand, but I'm part of the “everyone who has gone crazy” I guess; because Charles just seems to have lost it from my perspective.

“gekkobear” appears to be a real-life validation of Charles Johnson's characterization of the unhinged, rabid right-winger.

It's pretty funny. No wonder why Johnson decided he couldn't take those people any longer. Who could, outside of their own little circle?

He's not the first to defect from the right and he won't be the last. It is only a symptom of the political pendulum, having swung in recent decades far to the right, swinging back again toward the center. We can look forward to a few years of a truly centrist political majority before the pendulum has swung too far left. Since we have been rightist in this country since around 1980, we should find the left-most end of the swing and begin to swing back to the right about 2040, with bits of sanity in the interim.

Amen. Exposure to the outside world destroys them. They are hermetically sealed in their Cheney-ator 2004, where every Democrat is John Kerry and Max Clelland is a coward.

Charles Johnson is a shameless opportunist. “Never considered himself a 'conservative'” — sure, right. Nevermind that, along with the freepers, the “lizardoid” denizens of LGF were a seminal blogging community for attacking any opposition to the Bush-Cheney agenda as “batshit crazy loony left.” But it's easier for Johnson to get attention with the phony born again liberal schtick than having to compete among the current field of wingnuts.

Post 9/11 Charles Foster Johnson had an epiphany that brought him in alliance with Bush and the War on Terror. By doing that he attracted conservatives in overwhelming numbers that made his blog appear to be a conservative site. And to many ignorants on the left and right, they still see him and his site in that same light. But, if one were to read the archives, as I did once landing there, there is no doubt that Charles Foster Johnson was and always has been a Leftist.

As the LGF site grew, due to the many bright conservative writers and thinkers that congregated there, it attracted even more conservatives. I’m now certain this had been a pebble in his left shoe.

Then somewhere between 2007-08- I don’t recall exactly- Charles Foster Johnson began to comment in his threads – a thing he rarely did- and found that many other bright writers and thinkers of the liberal persuasion agreed with his slowly revealing and creeping Progressiveness, and he began to post entries that gave clear delineation of just who would be allowed to post there. Thus began the ‘my way, or the highway’ banning threads. And it continues to this very day.

This Contract with the Left that Charles Foster Johnson posted is the Hammer for the Cult he has cultivated at his blog, and serves to rid his site of any readers or posters and association with the Right completely.

The Left deserves him and he will fit nicely in the Den of the Deceived.

When it looks to you like everyone else in the world is crazy;

It's not everyone else in the world, just wingnut asshole birther freaks, i.e. the Republican Party and the Tea Baggers. You all stew in crazy.

I remember Little Green Footballs way back in 2001 and 2002 (long before I really understood what blogging was all about) (it looked a lot less slick than it does today) and as an American Muslim who is very active in Muslim civic engagement and religioius life, I found Mr. Johnson's posts very objectionable. I went back to the early posts on LGF today and my recollections were accurate. What happened?

Ah, so all Republicans and anyone who petitioned the government in the “tea party” protests are wingnut asshole birther freaks.

Let me guess, you hate people who side with Republicans and everything they stand for… and bigots who make assumptions about people without information?

But hey, you know everything about everyone based simply on a single action of theirs (like joining in a protest)… and I'm stewing in crazy. Funny how that works.

Right, and in the real world you don't have random assumptions about everyone who disagrees with you.

You know me feelings on Kerry and Clelland based on… I'm guessing psychic reverberations seeing as I mentioned neither of them. Or democrats in general, or anything except Charles and his actions. Weird how you know everything about me from one action; and are completely convinced you're accurate in every assumption made.

But keep fighting the imaginary image you've created of me rather than actually having a discussion or debate with me on what I actually say.

Your way looks like a lot more fun.

You're right. No one gave you much of a chance. It happens all across the political spectrum. I used to mix it up at LGF, say 5-7 years ago, too. Initially, I thought the site had some potential to offer discussion and debate among diverse perspectives of some seriously complicated issues. As the 04 elections cranked up, myself and a handful of other regulars tried crafting some arguments favorable to John Kerry's foreign policy positions — for example, drawing on Kerry's seminal subcommittee investigations of Iran-Contra and international crime and terror (see Kerry's book, The New War) — but the forums descended into pidgeon holing and name-calling, with Johnson himself enabling the Swift Boat smear campaign against Kerry's Vietnam record and cheering it all on with his very own infamous characterization of “JFK (John 'Fuckin' Kerry).”
