Jennifer Brunner should apologize for her "inflammatory and baseless attacks" against General McChrystal? If anyone should apologize, it should be McChrystal (and not an insincere "apology" further lying to the Tillman family like during his June 2nd Senate hearing).

McChrystal played the central role in the Army's handling of the aftermath of Pat Tillman's death. I've recently criticized Andrew Exum (fellow at Center for a New American Security) for his advocacy of McChrystal's "virtue" at his blog Abu Maqawama at cnas.org (see 11-02-09 and 11-10-09 posts).

For those interested in further detail, take a look at my documents that discuss the bipartisan effort to protect General McChrystal (involving Congressman Waxman, Senator Webb, and NYT Pentagon Reporter Thom Shanker) at feralfirefighter.blogspot.com

ThisThis, perhaps:

General McChrystal carries with him a dark side as well. One unit under his command, the now-notorious Task Force 6-26, which was assigned to find HVTs, or High Value Targets in Iraq, is credited with the ultimate death of Zarqawi. The problem is, along the way they faced accusations of running a secret camp that tortured prisoners, and they were implicated in at least two detainee deaths during torture sessions. Their camp, called Camp Nama, became something of a lightning rod after a “computer malfunction” destroyed upwards of 70% of their records and an investigation into their conduct stalled out.

More relevant to Afghanistan is GEN McChrystal’s involvement in the shameful coverup of Pat Tillman’s friendly-fire death. While he was named among the list of high-ranking military personnel believed to have covered up the circumstances of Tillman’s death, GEN McChrystal was “spared because he had apparently drafted a memo urging other officials to stop spreading the lie that Tillman died fighting the Taliban. He drafted that memo, however, after signing the award for Tillman’s posthumously-awarded Silver Star, the commendation for which claims, in part, that he was leading the charge against a Taliban assault. GEN McChrystal has never clarified why he signed an award for Tillman dying under enemy fire right before begging his colleagues and superiors to stop lying about Tillman dying under enemy fire.

So, using your template, would that mean the right is ignoring a raft of unseemly, if not illegal, things McChrystal has been involved in, in order to smear Obama/Dems over the war(s)? Again?

Actually, it's a simple thing. McChrystal actively participated in the coverup of Pat Tillman's friendly fire death. In fact, he went as far as to put Tillman's name in for a Silver Star, an honor not normally conferred when a solider is killed by his own troops. This coverup was meant to build up a narrative that Tillman died heroically fighting back a Taliban ambush. It probably wasn't entirely coincidental that Tillman died and the coverup began the VERY WEEK the Abu Ghirab photos were revealed to the world. If McChrystal was willing to tell lies and help others further lies in the name of propoganda and damage control, then why should his military judgement be treated as either infallible or even reliable.

Jon Krakauer has an excellent book about Pat Tillman, I suggest you read it.

Someone please explain to me how the Pat Tillman incident has anything at all to do with a troop increase in Afghanistan. The left has been flogging this for months now, in a pathetically transparent attempt at smearing McChrystal in order to make ignoring his recommendations seem like no big deal.
