Clinton on Israeli Settlement Freeze
Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at 2:12 pm
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after spending much of 2009 pushing against the Obama administration’s call for a settlement freeze, has proposed a 10-month settlement freeze in the interest of what he called “meaningful negotiations to reach a historic peace agreement that would finally end the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.” Here’s the official reaction from Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton:
Today’s announcement by the Government of Israel helps move forward toward resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We believe that through good-faith negotiations the parties can mutually agree on an outcome which ends the conflict and reconciles the Palestinian goal of an independent and viable state based on the 1967 lines, with agreed swaps, and the Israeli goal of a Jewish state with secure and recognized borders that reflect subsequent developments and meet Israeli security requirements. Let me say to all the people of the region and world: our commitment to achieving a solution with two states living side by side in peace and security is unwavering.
Clinton created a great deal of outrage in the Arab world after she called a previous offer from Netanyahu that came far short of a total freeze “unprecedented.” This reply is far more restrained.

When it was Clinton's administration, we already love president Clinton and her boyfriend Bill, now we still do!

What she should have done is given it the response it deserved- NOTHING, NADA. This grand offer on the party of Likud is a smokescreen – it has already been floated out and rebuked by Fatah, for obvious reasons and yet Bibi comes out and announces it like it's some grand gesture.
The idea of Bibi running around pretending to give a sh*t about peace is bad enough, but to have to listen to this administration give him props for his latest Kabuki theater is really too much. I'm a huge Hillary fan and watching Bibi run political circles around her and her boss is painful. Nobody knows better than the Clintons that paranoid Bibi doesn't mean a damn thing he says.
The permit department in Israel has been working over time so that it really doesn't mean anything that Bibi ok'd a “temporary freeze” with its myriad of exceptions which render it meaningless- given all the action of late in terms of settlement growth both current and with respect to permits already approved, this latest announcement is a joke. After spending the last 10 months throwing Abbas under the bus (unfortunately with the help of the US), Bibi is simply trying to divert attention away from all the things Israel has done to help ensure that two states never materialize and playing Hamas against Fatah, so as to now make everything the Palestinians fault. Unfortunately here in the US, that's a script the MSM and Congress seem to love.
