Local GOP Censures Graham for Climate Cooperation, Other Bipartisanship

Anyone who pooh-poohed Sen. Lindsey Graham’s (R-S.C.) politically courageous decision to work with Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) to help craft bipartisan climate legislation might reconsider his position after this news out of South Carolina:

The Charleston County Republican Party’s executive committee took the unusual step Monday night of censuring U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham for stepping across the GOP party line.

Marc Ambinder has the full text of the resolution. Here are the key portions:

Whereas, U.S. Senators Lindsey Graham (SC) and John Kerry (MA) have called for a bipartisan bill dealing with “climate change” via a “Cap & Trade” energy bill;

Whereas, the basis of Cap & Trade – global warming caused by carbon emissions – is still in doubt as evidenced by the past decade of cooling temperatures;

Whereas, the people of South Carolina can ill afford the job-killing Cap & Trade bill’s ripple effects on our state’s economy and on personal energy bills; [...]

Therefore, let it be resolved: The Charleston County Republican Party Executive Committee respectfully requests, with sincere sadness that the South Carolina Republican Party withdraw their resolution commending U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham and that the Charleston Country Republican Party censure U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham for many of the positions he has taken that do not represent the wishes of the people of South Carolina, such as: passing a “Cap & Trade” energy bill, bailing out banks, and granting amnesty for illegal aliens.

Which Republican senator will be next to step up and cross party lines on climate legislation?

Lindsey Graham is a leader in bipartisanship and should be commended. We need leaders who can act without fear of local retribution. I am a lifelong Republican, but It is sad that our party is stuck in the 1950's. Someone is going to fight the battles of the future,not the past. Wake up Republicans and see the challenges of the future for our children'sake. All Republicans do not want the status quo, deadlocked government, and relentless opposition to every Democratic idea. Leaders look forward, not back.

Watch the GOP commit suicide by bigotry, ignorance and lack of foresight. Keep up the good work tea-baggers. Purge those moderates… that will leave all of you to drive the Republican Party with your delusions… oh, and your less than 20% of the electorate. Don't believe me? Good.
