Conservative Outrage of the Day

[UPDATE: Quick clarification. This is definitely a conservative media outrage, but Boaz is a libertarian.] I’m reporting out something unrelated, so I’ve almost missed this, but apparently President Obama has made a major error in not going to Germany for the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Politico’s Arena is all over it. Here’s David Boaz of the Cato Institute.

It’s hard to see why you would go to Copenhagen for the Olympics and again for an environmental conference, and to France for D-Day, but not to Germany to celebrate the liberation of half a continent from totalitarianism.

Well, something like 2,500 Americans died on D-Day. And the president may not actually attend the climate summit in Copenhagen. The Olympic trip might be the most open to critique, although it was, obviously, a mission to bring something back to the United States, and not a commemoration of anything. Apart from that, though, these are exactly the same sort of events, and they should be energetically discussed on cable news today.

What have D Day deaths got to do with the fall of the Iron Curtain?
D-Day was about Hitler and the Germans, not the Iron Curtain.

The fall of the Iron Curtain was about Lech Walesa's Union rising up and Gorbachev not responding by rolling Soviet tanks across eastern Europe like they had in the good old days.

Since the RepoCons falsely claim credit for other people putting their lives on the line to end the hold of the USSR on Eastern Europe, and giving it to Reagan, who did absolutely nothing during that whole process –
it is probable that Obama simply did not want to step in that cow paddy. Let the Republicans claim false victory and let the Europeans, who were the victors, celebrate their own courage. They don’t need us on this one.

Of course, if Obama went to Germany yesterday, and didn't make it back to Texas for the Fort Hood memorial, they'd complain about that, too.

You'd think Boaz would just be happy Obama wasn't spending taxpayer money on the trip.
