Hi, great article, but the photographer wasn't staff, he was a freelance filmmaker doing his own story. Later he included a writer for the WSJ and that is when the WSJ picked up his story. thanks,

Scav´age
n.	1.	(O. Eng. Law) A toll or duty formerly exacted of merchant strangers by mayors, sheriffs, etc., for goods shown or offered for sale within their precinct.

I don't understand the first line. Unless this is another case of "news" without editors or spell check.

Although the article address a real problem, your approach could not be farther of mark. The government will only make this problem worse, not better. They should not interfere, but make it easier for private citizens and investors to clean the place up, create jobs and spur growth. I know cause I work in these areas of Detroit. The opportunities in Detroit are huge, but it seems that at every step I'm fighting the city or country who seem to want to keep the status quo.

"I wonder if we’ll look back at this as a time when we stood by and let some of the country’s once-great communities simply fall into disrepair and die." These communities have "killed" themselves yet refuse to acknowledge it or do anything to reverse the course. It's not Washington's job to fix the backward thinking of Detroit and Michigan as a whole.

The houses owned by real estate "speculators"...that's not a bad thing. The real estate investors are the cities best friend. They are the only one's that will buy this stuff. And it is their job and best interest to see the neighborhood improved, thereby increasing the value of their investment. Stop acting like they are the enemy, they are the saving grace.

For the life of me I can not understand why the author looks to the government to fix the problem that government has created? In what world does that make sense? Get out of the classroom and start living in the real world.
