Conservatives Worried Unemployment Vote Foreshadows Health Reform Debate

After three weeks of stalling over controversial amendments to legislation extending unemployment benefits, Senate GOP leaders are floating a new message as they criticize the way Democrats have managed the process: they’re trying to paint the unemployment insurance debate as a kind of forewarning of what might happen as the Senate moves to health reform legislation later in the month.

Last Thursday, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) argued that Republicans have been “extraordinarily reasonable” in insisting on a handful of amendments, some unrelated to the underlying unemployment legislation. The Senate minority leader cautioned that Americans will revolt if Democrats similarly refuse such amendments during the coming health reform debate.

I hope this is not the way the majority leader is planning on handling the health care debate because the American people will storm the Capitol if they think the majority is going to dictate to the minority what amendments will be offered on a bill as significant as restructuring one-sixth of the economy.

That theme is becoming popular in the conservative echo chamber. Yesterday, the Heritage Foundation made a similar link between the amendment process surrounding the unemployment and health reform bills.

An extension of unemployment insurance benefits will occupy the Senate for most of the week, again. Not only is this the wrong way to address the lack of jobs, but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has numerous amendments, including those that may actually spur job creation. Shutting down the amendment process does not bode well for the upcoming health care debate.

Of course, Democrats haven’t shut down the amendment process. They’ve just refused to consider controversial provisions that have nothing to do with the underlying bill. The warning here seems to be that we might have to endure once more as the health reform debate is similarly stalled by amendments related to ACORN, illegal immigrants and the Wall Street bailout.

A procedural vote on the Senate bill is scheduled today at around 5:30 p.m.. If the proposal hops that hurdle, it clears the way for final passage later in the week.

The GOP has nothing to offer, but they want to be taken seriously. They refuse to either lead, follow, or get out of the way. The amusing thing is that they think that being the speed bump party is somehow going to win future election for them.

Both parties ignore the demand for fiscal responsibility. If they do not bring out candidates that will promote the interest of the citizen many of them will be out of office in 2010 and 2012. We do not need more big government spenders in office. McCain and the Rhino's in the party had better move aside if they want to be relevant.

The republicans seem to be losing touch with reality. They seem to be interested in only stalling everthing the Dems are doing irreguardless of whether it is good or not. I have voted Republican for more than 30 years now but that will change next election. They have lost sight of their jobs.

We have been used for weeks in their political game playing and as a result people are being evicted and losing their cars let alone being able to put food on the table to have the energy to go out all day and look for work. New rules need to be addressed where an ammendment unrelated to a bill being considered has no rellevance. But because of this Fu..ing health care crap looming ammendments are going to be the catalyst in how that legislation comes about and they are using the unemployment etension legislation to set the table for that. I say to hell with all of them. They are all crooks!

I think they should all get tossed out. The Dems could move this through considerably faster if they wanted to, yet they are dragging their feet. Granted the stuff the Repubs are doing does not help, but they both are not exactally eager to get this bill moved into law. With that filibuster proof majority there is NO legitimate reason as to why this has taken as long as it has. And the proof is in the pudding when the last closure vote for this bill was 87-13. There is more than enough bi-partisan support for it to fly through the senate.

okay let them vote today it will pass, then the 30 hr cooling off period will happen then off to the house ,that will be real fast then President Obama will sign this by sunday is my guess so hang in their people, my only beef is they need to start working in some program with employers that hire new people at over X amount of dollars per hour , they will get some kind of tax break that would get people to work otherwise this is good for now but they need a long term plan , they do cash for clunkers but nothing like cash for employers that hire workers why I ask ….

Watching the pigs on Cspan2 today was a real revelation.

The unemployment benefits extension isn't a partisan problem, Republicans and Democrats alike are affected. But the Dems were the only ones addressing the actual need to pass these benefits immediately. This has been done routinely in the past, and done by both Bush's admins even.

Scum hypocrite McConnell was smirking when he said his crap about holding it up for weeks, then Kyl and Alexander had their vaudeville act about ACORN or something. I liked that mental midget Alexander misrepresenting de Tocqueville. Remember when he went around with that flannel shirt pretending to be for the working man and got 0.00 percent of Republican presidential primary votes. What a fraud.

This total pig Thune says the unemployed bill should be held up so he can attach a 4-paragraph amendment — guess that's his reading comprehension limit — calling for $700 billion in TARP funds to go immediately to pay down the deficit. Yeah, thanks.

That's either a filibuster or Thune's the dumbest pig in the poke. They also say they don't want continuation of a $14 per year tax paid by employees already in place to fund the benefits. That's the same tax everybody who was employed paid so there would be benefits for them.

And then 13 of them didn't even want a cloture vote to allow for a debate on whether to vote take place.

I don't get it.

Speaking of de Tocqueville, if this were France circa 1789, the Repub senators would be guillotined already.

yes thats nut i understand we cant have crazy stuff pass but this is basiclly an amendment to the last on i read the law on this this is still tier three of the extension it extends tier 3 unemployment extension by 20 weeks in most states then 14 weeks in lower unemployment rate states and all it applys to all that havent found a job and have exusted part 1 of tier 3

the $14 per employee tax is paid by the employer not the worker. It has been in effect for 30 years. I hardly think extending it for 2 more years is going to be a burden on employers. After 30 years it is already in their budgets.

I can see your point but, if we keep moving jobs out of the country and we have about 7 million without a job and about 2 million jobs to begotten it will lead to much crime and maybe a civil outbreak. All the bills are important but the ones that deal with the moment e.g. Unemployment need to be addressed first. I am not for a lazy A$$ that wants to milk the system and I would rather work than take an extension but if it does not happen it will be USA the next 3rd world nation.. Get the illegals out of the workplace, help the lower and middle class get homes and help the small businesses with a tax break. Do you realize most of our taxes pay for alot of BS because the more $$ you have the more you can find a way through a loop hole. My Grandfather fought the NAZI's and I have a 2nd LT. Lufwaffe dagger to prove it, he killed that SOB. my father fought in WWII and lived through the great depression Im sure you have family that lived through it also. Do we need another depression? little kids starving? parents doing anything they can to survive and keep their family fed and safe? You have internet do a search and see what previous American families went through. Just type in 1930's depression We dont need that now in this new millenium. I wish you much success in whatever you do.

theroetically it could with some ,but the most someone can make is $425 per week on unemployment thats $22,000 per year aprx . So if you were making $40-$50k per year and you are willing to accept $22k per thats a huge loss for you no one in their right mind would wanna do that. Plus jobs are not their you say well McDonalds is hiring it could be but these people cant feed children or put a kid in daycare that cost $600 month at a $7.50 an hr doesn't cut it so what to do , Ive seen people say put them to work for a few hrs a week well who's gonna watch their kid ,right their is another gov program we would get into so that cost even more money that wouldn't make since, also Ive seen people give them vouchers why we didnt give GM or the Banks vouchers even though they cost the gov billions ,I say Give people help hell give them 40 more weeks of unemployment benifits but start a program with employers saying you hire this guy for at least $14 per hr we will give you a tax encentive i bet you would see employers hiring everyone or anyone then felon or non felon my point is these employers need an incentive to hire till something geared more to the employers happens we will see more of the same with this .

Thanks Milke Lillis for deciphering the strategy of the Republicans in the Senate I was thiniking they were just stupid. They used the people losing their homes and unable to feed their kids and that dont have enough money to stay afloat as a football for the Health Care debate. Unless they could make up the phony fabrication that the Democrats were being unreasonable in stripping unemployment of amendments that belong on Mars (acorn and the like) they now have a phony platform to fight for amendments on the Healthcare Bill. They made working people suffer who are waiting for help while they are unemployed so the could strip the Healthcare Bill of any ability to help people who need healthcare. All at the behest of the Pharmaceutical companies and the Healthcare organizations reaping biillions at the expense of working people. We need the real public option

This has affected so many people, their entire lives have changed, barely able to keep a roof over their heads. I'm a HR Executive, I know how to find a job, there are NONE! Resumes just fall into empty holes! Additionally, that's what UI is, insurance on unemployment and unemployment is at an all time high, every state, everyone suffering. The Political leaders in this senate is fll of s%^&. Now the Republicans say we could have had this done a long time ago. Reallly did any of them view the smirk on McConnell's ugly face when Reid begged him to allow a vote for the unemployed AMERICANS. Oh but by no means does this excuse the fact that Democrats did not start trying to work on this before the August recess, they knew it was coming and instead of doing preventive work they now cry foul because Republicans are making them look like the weak, spineless politicians the Democrat party has become. Hatch, Kyl and McConnell should be driven to areas in all states where people are suffering the most and dropped off. Reid and every other Democrat senator and House of Representative should be made to find their collective balls and either really fight to represent the people or be removed from office right now. People election day is tomorrow, show up at polling places with signs and if you can a group of intelligent speaking but mad as hell people. Pur our senate on trial in the media. Make them explain how we the American people became a bargaining chip in their political fights. And of course vote while you are there. LOL Bastards!

Bye the way for the conservative whatever blogger down below, May your daughter grow up and marry a black man or a hispanic man and have lots of beautiful mixed babies. it must be nice to have a job where u work minimal hours and get maximum pay not to mention get to give yourself a raise whenever u feel like it.

The Dems need a majority whip who can whip some ass and get things done. Of course who the hell knows where the president is.

Got to love the Repubs, they just lie lie, and deny, and then distract, so they can sneak and perpetrate, and lie some more, then shift the blame to the other team! It's such a lovely strategy, they're so upstanding the way the represent the will of the people, don't you think?

Honestly, immigration related amendments, and TARP junk, and ACORN amendments (ACORN is a novel's worth in itself, the GOP's newly invented boogieman, ACORN, so many many lies they've invented on that issue, I recommend watching http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDxm–DyavI to learn more), none of this junk belongs in the unemployment bill.

Actually,I don' t agree with anyone adding unrelated crap, to a bill this essential to ending the suffering of so many Americans! Please Senate, put your pet issues up for a vote another time, not this time, not at the expense of 7,000 folks a day going penniless, not at the cost of 1.3 million Americans going hungry and homeless! Not today! Not while you pass billions in corporate fat cat raises for your buddies in the banks, wall street, and corporate America, and raises for your staff, not while you sit comfortably living off of what WE PAY YOU!

As for the GOP, they're just sticking to the same old political games that are the reason that the American dream is currently in a coma! They want to blame the Dems, while they perpetrate, banking on the fact that most Americans will continue to do as they did for decades, and just watch a GOP tainted news report here or there, and never check the facts, never watch c-span two to see for themselves what's really going on, and not read the language of the bills and amendments for themselves.

I say, READ, WATCH, and then you'll see right through their lies, and then WRITE, CALL, as much as possible, as many crooked politicians as possible, and let those suckers have it from every state, most especially Jon Kyl minority whip, who says we have all the time in the world, and that benefits have not ran out! Also a main target should be the minority leader. They all deserve an earful, and also remember them on election day! Make yourself a “naught and nice” list, so that you don't forget who's been good, and who gets fired, or accidentally vote for one of these suckers in the coming years for, God forbid president, or Vice Prez and kill us all!

**For more evil stopping fun, go to republicansforrape.org to find out which 30 evil fine outstanding rich white men from the GOP voted against a law that would stop the federal government from contracting with those who make their female employees sign a “rape clause”, which forbids them from taking legal action if they are raped on the job!! Watch the woman's story who was gang raped by fellow employees while in IRAQ, working for a government hired defense contractor! If you click the link marked “legislators” on the site, you will find the gorgeous faces of the fine members of the GOP who supported rapists, by voting against the law, and if you hover over their lovely pictures, it has their phone numbers so you can call personally, and send them your thanks for protecting us against rapists. Tell them how much you think that's in line with those ever so wholesome Christian values they pretend to have when it's convenient.

CLOTHING they wear, every warm and
PEACEFUL BREATH they take is
VICIOUSLY UNCARINGLY TAKEN from a child of a

AMERICAN TAXPAYERS that worked and paid taxes for 10, 20, 30+ years;

Unemployment Insurance Benefit == Extension
***REAL LIFE Definition ? FORMERLY EMPLOYED Emergency Insurance Taxpayer Contribution Fund
= Recession/JOB MARKET CONTRACTION. LESS JOBS. NOT A HANDOUT. REPEAT 10 TIMES, NOT A HANDOUT.
LEARN IT. UNDERSTAND IT. COMPREHEND IT CORRECTLY otherwise get the f*ck out of the way republican senators; how DARE they think their PUBLIC PAID serving ass is doing AMERICA and AMERICANS FORMERLY EMPLOYED any good by months of BLOCKING? Who do they think they ARE? They have a cushy ass job by OUR GRACE – the AMERICAN PEOPLE, in the PUBLIC SERVICE of AMERICANS, not their SELF-SERVINGASS; and get over the poor little companies having to pay the INSURANCE of LESS THAN $0.29 per WEEK, yes, repugnant blockheads,
TWENTY NINE F*CKEN CENTS, which has existed for OVER 30 years, and funding of government by

***Americans got angry at bank exec bonuses and auto execs buying jet planes – that was a public offense of LESS PRIORITY than the PERSONAL THREAT of basic living needs, FOOD SHELTER are much more emotional fundamental needs being threatened, a match next to a raging forest fire
***Protect Americans from enemies both foreign and DOMESTIC… as CORRUPT republican blocking senators and corporate execs with mansions, huge $$bonuses, jets, surrounded by MILLIONS of LAID OFF AMERICANS; ignoring DENYING and LYING to AMERICA for days weeks months on the unem. INSURANCE for AMERICANS FORMERLY EMPLOYED and their AMERICAN FAMILIES/CHILDREN, for bare survival needs of food warmth cleanliness. Bend your little republican brain away from your greedy selfish goals and see over 1.3 MILLION yes OVER A MILLION AMERICANS without food money or hope, watching their children go hungry, shoved out of their homes, kicked to the curbs of the streets, pushed to the wall….
