Clarifying Those Amendments That Have Stalled the Unemployment Debate

As we just noted, Senate Republicans are urging consideration of three amendments on the proposal to extend federal unemployment benefits, but only two are the source of disagreement between the parties.

The first, sponsored by Sen. Mike Johanns (R-Neb.), would fund the extension using unspent stimulus money, rather than extending a small surtax on employers, as Democrats have proposed. The second, sponsored by Sens. John Thune (R-S.D.) and Robert Bennett (R-Utah), would eliminate the authority of the White House to extend the Wall Street bailout past its expiration date. (Under current law, TARP is scheduled to expire at the end of 2009, but the Treasury Department has the authority to extend it to Oct. 10, 2010.)

Party leaders have already reached agreement on the third, which seeks to end the federal ownership of bailed-out firms by assigning non-partisan trustees to manage them — a provision sponsored by Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) and Mark Warner (D-Va.).

Based on Reid's comments they are hoping to come to an agreement and vote early Monday on this.

i am sooo tired of the manipulative double talk i’m hearing from the republican senators over this issue. i’ve voted republican for most of my life, but i guess i wasn’t paying close enough attention. i am now and it is an insult to my intelligence. how gullible do they think i am. well, i guess i have been, but NO MORE. my eyes have been opened by the internet and politicians should take note. americans are intelligent, compassionate, and now better informed. be careful with your tricky deceptions, they will come back to bite you(as in no reelection). this unemployment extension is not a long term entitlement, it is a lifeline and an economic stimulus equal to 1.6 dollars for every dollar put in. i’ve watched the major banks who quickly received multi-billion dollar bailouts plus basically o% fed money which have allowed them huge profits tern around and raise credit card rates from under 10% to 30% in the time provided them by this same senate before the senate enacted so called reforms to “protect” consumers. my message to the senate is simple: quit trying to attach unpassable amendments to this unemployment extension. Quit messing with people’s well being. you are creating millions of angry voters, and as you well know angry people go to the polls….. jim shadgett… informed vote

This is pathetic. They needed to vote on it this week, not next week. Like he said they are only in 2 days next week. Let's freeze up their money and make them live for months at a time scraping by on no money.

Obviously they don't give a flying crap about the people that are still unemployed. If those people are falling off the unemployment benefit rolls…it makes the stimulus look better…assholes!

They should have voted on this weeks ago….

I agree, but it wasn't, so there is no reason they couldn't vote & do this today.

It looks like the republicans are allied with al Qaeda. They both share the same goal.
Their motto is “Death to America!”

The repub's are hoping we'll all have jobs by Tuesday and thus save all those bucks for their own agendas. Look at what Kyl said, “but gee whiz, guys, they're not out of benefits yet”. A tricky dicky wannabee.

Yep!… Time to get GOP “OUT”!!!! I'm voting a straight Democratic ticket next time… I've NEVER voted a straight party ticket in my life before. I'm so anxious for the next election, cause then we'll be voting on their jobs :0)

As the saying goes… “payback is a bitch”!

I am all for voting out the people that are holding the bill up. Not all Republicans are bad just like, not all democrats are good. People need to stop voting for just a party or a well known name. Every election the same ones get voting right back in to office. Voters vote them in because they are on the news more then the other candidate and they know their name or they vote for them because of their party. Next election do your home work on the person whether he or she is a Republican or a Democrat and vote for them and NOT THE PARTY. Until people start doing this the United States is going to be screwed up.

If you really want to send the message, quit paying federal taxes.

Just staple an IOU to your next federal tax return and add the message that “My family is still debating on whether to pay this. We should have an answer in about 82 working days (due to the senate only working two days a week, this roughly equates to 6 months). I am sure you UNDERSTAND the importance of making a correct decision in the best interests of everyone involved for something as important as this.”

Republicans don't care about the middle class. They only care about taking care of the rich. Democrats over history have been the party of the middle class. That is why the Republicans have not supported the unemployment extension.

Angie do not let people like jason get to you, it is probably one of those guys whose mother and father are brother and sister. Why would he even be on this site commenting unless he is fucking Kyl or Hatch or McConnell or maybe all of them. He is probably a congressional aide who can teach you and me how to sell ass for$$$$. Don't be upset at him, just remember cyber bullies wouldn't bust a grape in a food fight.

It's comforting to see that I'm not the only one….. who is paying close attention to the gov, who is suffering the consequences of the Congressional INACTIONs, who is drowning under the fee hikes from banks that needed bailing out… I want to know this: Where is the public's bailout? And I wonder how Congress will feel when they join us – the unemployed? When we vote out these Congressional slackers, as their stock portfolios continue to plummet, and their buddies go out of business, when they are quickly approaching a rock bottom of their own…. will they regret the delay and hell they have put the majority of us through? I hope it burns them twice as much as it's devastated us.
Side Note for Jason – Tell us where the jobs are, we'd all love one of our own. Be the solution, asshole – we have enough problems!

I'm so glad people are waking up to the Republican tricks and plain old cold-heartedness. THEY don't give a damn about ANYTHING but WAR and POWER. PERIOD! Just listen to their sound bites on FIX News and CNN. Afghan this and Pakistan that. Nothing about the unemployment benefits. But they do find the time to point out the fact that jobs aren't plentiful because they allowed our jobs to go overseas. They will definitely be COMPLETELY voted out in 2010 and 2012. Also Blue Dogs that are Repubs in disguise will go as well.

Ron Paul is a Republican and he does not agree with any of these scum bags. Vote for the person that is in the party and not for a party. We need to weed out COLD HEARTED from both party's
