Steve King to NFL Commissioner: Apologize to Rush!

Here’s an interesting confrontation from a hearing on the Hill today between Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. King said he’d “scoured” Rush Limbaugh’s infamous comment that the media was giving Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb too much credit because he was black and found no racism in it whatsoever — Limbaugh, said King, was calling out the media for reverse racism. Goodell and King went back and forth a bit, but King refused to budge on his position that Limbaugh was being smeared as a racist even though he’s colorblind about race. King went on to say that Goodell was being a hypocrite by failing to criticize some hip-hop stars with stakes in NFL teams.

I don’t think anything that Rush Limbaugh said was offensive, but with Fergie and with J-Lo, they have, between the two of them, alleged that the CIA are terrorists and liars, they’ve promoted sexual abuse of women, they’ve used the N word, verbal pornography, recreational drug use, etc. And they are owners of the Dolphins. And it’s also ironic that Fergie was approved as an owner on the very day that you made your statement on Rush Limbaugh.

It’s probably worth mentioning that the House Judiciary Committee hearing was titled “Legal Issues Related to Football Head Injuries.”

I do not have the room to display all of his greatest hits. And you don't have to believe me–use google. Hmmm-racist, anti-government and sexist. Limbaugh is a trifecta of idiocy. That anyone supports this stain on the landscape makes me question their intelligence.

Doesn't Goodell's lack of direct response tell you people ANYTHING? Those things were NEVER spoken. The man is on the radio and no one can find ANY tape of the alleged comments. NOWHERE! Rush's one comment isn't racist, he said the media has overrated McNabb because he's black. Owner's are forced to interview black coaches, even though they may not be the best candidate. Quotas, reverse discrimination and now the government is quietly stealing liberties that your parent or grandparents fought and many died for.

I agree that this was a fascinating non sequitur that made for good political theater–and a bit disappointing, I might add, in that Mr. Goodell didn't answer Mr. King in kind for his support of what was a patently racist statement (though it is difficult to stand up even for what is clearly right when being pummeled at an official hearing by a servile “Dittohead” who happens to be a Member of Congress). But it actually IS “worth mentioning” that this hearing was about NFL players who suffer from concussions and the dementia and other debilitating effects they can produce. These men are not millionaires. Many of them are homeless, now, after long, proud NFL careers. If they were linemen, their average age of death is in their early fifties!–that's for ALL ex-NFL linemen. It is further worth noting that, for some reason, only one ex-NFL player whose career ended as a result of Traumatic Brain Injury was included on a panel of some eighteen witnesses, a man with a contract to broadcast NFL events (though, it must be said, he did an admirable job as a witness) even though extensive recent New York Times and New Yorker articles have examined the fate of more representative players who do not have broadcast contracts–who are, indeed, disabled, uninsurable and unemployable due to football injuries–and the incredible Kafkaesque benefit denial mechanism that has been erected by the NFL and, to date the NFLPA as well, to evaluate their claims and either deny them outright or delay them until dementia or death removes the meddlesome applicant from causing further trouble. As a representative microcosm of the need for health care reform and the abuses of a private health care system dominated by the interests of powerful employers seeking to minimize benefit costs, not those of workers and families in need of medical help, there was a REAL story, here, as well as this sideshow. Look into it!

Most of the NFL owners probably agree with 95% of what Rush says on his show. But they don't want a controversial man like Rush messing up the gazillions they make from their teams. Liberal or conservative, they just don't want bad publicity involved…period. Its all about the green.

It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.
