Chamber of Commerce Supports Climate Legislation! (Or Not … )
Monday, October 19, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Environmentalists woke up to a welcome surprise this morning, as The New York Times and other outlets reported that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce — arguably the most powerful opponent of cap-and-trade legislation — had pulled a 180 and decided to support a climate bill. Climate blogger Adam Siegel proclaimed it “good news for America” and praised Chamber President Tom Donohue for being “strong enough to stand up in public to admit his errors and call for a new path forward.”
The only problem? The whole thing was a hoax.
TPM has compiled the relevant documents. They’re good for a chuckle.
Update: Kate Sheppard attended the announced press conference, and instead of Donohue, she found prankster Andy Bichlbaum of the Yes Men. A Chamber representative was present — but in protest.

Aaron –
Thanks for noting my piece but perhaps it is worth commenting what the end was from the first moment that it was posted: “Sadly, this was an action (a great action) from the Avaaz Action Factory which actually had reporters going for a bit this morning.”
My error was not knowing that it actually was a Yes Men action with AAF tactical support. I never published that this was true.

As soon as I saw that this was a “hoax,” I knew this was the Yes Men. They do good work.

A cynic, I see? You probably question Stephen Colbert and Glenn Beck's sincerity, as well. Well, I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, and I don't care what any of you ivory tower, big city reporters say.
