CNN Poll: 52 Percent Say Afghanistan Is ‘Another Vietnam’

CNN has just released a poll that found 52 percent of Americans, according to a new CNN poll, say Afghanistan has turned into “a situation like the U.S. faced in the Vietnam War.” More than two-thirds of respondents said Afghanistan probably won’t have a stable government within the next few years. Also:

According to the poll, 59 percent of people questioned opposed sending more U.S. troops to Afghanistan with 39 percent in favor. Of the 59 percent opposed, 28 percent want Washington to withdraw all U.S troops, 21 percent are calling for a partial American pullout, and 8 percent say the number of troops should remain the same.

I don’t know what follows from a sentiment that Afghanistan is another Vietnam. Vietnam is a bit of a Rorschach test. But it’s obviously a bad thing. Although Matthew Yglesias points out that Vietnam ultimately didn’t turn out so bad in the long run!

Those of us who lived through the Vietnam War era and watched the number of Killed in Action rise to over 50,000 are terrified this will be another slaughter.
Over 50,000 American sons and daughters Died for Johnson's Tonkin Gulf Lie, for nothing.

We initially sent our troops to Afghanistan for vengeance, as a response to an unprovoked attack on 9-11. While I believe we should have instead attacked the Saudis (most 9-11 terrorists were Saudi and were funded by Saudis ) the fact is that the Taliban that ruled Afghanistan supported al Qaida and deserved our invasion.

Given that Bush and Cheney pulled troops from Afghanistan for the illegal Invasion of Iraq, based on the WMD Lies to Congress, the responsibility for not capturing or killing Osama rests solely on Bush and Cheney. But, that result is in the past. That the Afghan War was poorly fought is not Obama's or the Democrat's fault as they were not in power.

Afghanistan is a tribal area. Calling it a nation is a stretch. We are not going to win anything there or be able to build a stable government. The Afghan people have already paid a heavy price for supporting the Taliban and al Quaida. More troops and a continued war will just turn more muslins against us all around the globe. It is time to

Declare victory and bring our troops home.
Give reconstruction aid to them if you must but bring our soldiers home.

And Prosecute the Bush-Cheney Conspiracy To Torture.
They used Torture to cover up the WMD Lies.

Put yourself out for the Truth.

Get out in the streets in front of your Congressional Representative's office and raise hell.
Start your own “prosecution” protest group.

KEEP ASKING ALL POLITICIANS AT ALL PUBLIC EVENTS
“WHY DO YOU SUPPORT TORTURE?”
If they aren't actively calling for enforcement of our Federal Torture Laws, They DO Support Torture and a dual standard of Justice.

We have to stop playing world cop but I doubt the military industrial complex will ever allow it. Afghanistan seems to love war, it actually appears to be the national past time so why should we interrupt their fun let them slaughter each other, last man standing wins.
