Considering that Booker T. Washington was opposed to African-American participation in politics and argued that African-Americans were thousands of years behind whites in moral and cultural development and had to prove that they understood the dignity of labor before they deserved the right to be engaged politically, is this really someone to be held up as a hero for 21st century blacks? He was opposed to everything the Civil Rights Movement fought for, beyond the economic opportunities.
