Michael Steele Attacks Obama Over Nobel Peace Prize. Yes, Really.

By
Friday, October 09, 2009 at 9:58 am

The Republican National Committee has issued a political response to the president’s Nobel Peace Prize, blasting the Nobel Committee for denying the prize to unnamed “tireless advocates” and attacking the president’s domestic record. The quote, from RNC Chairman Michael Steele:

The real question Americans are asking is, “What has President Obama actually accomplished?” It is unfortunate that the president’s star power has outshined tireless advocates who have made real achievements working towards peace and human rights. One thing is certain — President Obama won’t be receiving any awards from Americans for job creation, fiscal responsibility, or backing up rhetoric with concrete action.

In recent years, really since the prize was awarded to Yasir Arafat, conservatives have attacked it as an award the America-hating parts of the world like to give out to promote their hatred. This, however, seems like a hasty statement from the opposition party.

LOLOL, OMG…too fuckin funny.

Get this…the institution that AWARDS people for the Nobel Peace prize is The Norwegian Nobel Committee. The committee is composed of five members appointed by the Storting (Norwegain Parliament).

#1 Thorbjørn Jagland (Chairman) President of the Storting

Thorbjørn Jagland started his political career in the Workers' Youth League, and served as national leader from 1977 to 1981. is the youth wing of the Norwegian Labour Party. AUF was formed in April 1927, following the merger of Left Communist Youth League and Socialist Youth League of Norway. It's ideology is DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISM!.

In 1998, four leaders and treasurers of Oslo AUF were convicted of fraud and jailed as part of the Workers' Youth League membership scandal. They were found to have filed excessive membership numbers in order to receive increased municipal grants, and the court case revealed that most youth parties and their leaders had been engaging in this practice since the 1970s.[27] Jagland testified in the case and said it was not necessarily wrong to “advance” money for memberships, provided the members in question reimburse this fee later on. But he did testify that it was unacceptable to transfer money from AUF's main bank account to pay for membership fees. When pressed by the prosecutor, he also agreed that membership numbers were too high when he was the leader of AUF.

Since 1999, Jagland is also one of several vice presidents of the Socialist International. Jagland stated that the left wing in Norway does not use Socialist International enough. From 2000 to 2006, he chaired the Socialist International Committee on the Middle East, and he has outspokenly opposed the perceived presence of ISLAMOPHOBIA (hmmm) in Western societies.

#2 Kaci Kullmann Five (Deputy Chairman) Adviser Public Affairs

Not much on this one, cept that she is a Board Member of International IDEA. IDEA offers database access on topics as voter turnout, electoral system design, quotas for women and political finance laws and regulations.

HMMM, another Community Organizer!

#3 Sissel Rønbeck (Member) Deputy Director, Directorate for Cultural Heritage

Sissel Marie Rønbeck is a Norwegian politician for the Labour Party. Another Socialist/Communist!

#4 Inger-Marie Ytterhorn (Member) Senior political adviser to the Progress Party's Parliamentary Group

She seems ok, guess she was outnumbered by the Socialists!

#5 Ågot Valle (Member) Member of Parliament

Ågot Valle is a Norwegian politician for the Socialist Left Party. which is an alliance of the Socialist People's Party, Communist Party of Norway, Democratic Socialists – AIK and independent Socialists.

NEED I SAY MORE you Obamacornians? Socialism, that's all they want from Obama!

Michael Steele… keeping it classy as always. If the GOP spent have the time they currently spend on deriding the President and rooting against everything, they might actually have time to come up with na idea or two.

That said, here hoping Obama takes up Mr. Steele's implied challenge and starts enacting some of his rhetoric. You think the Right hates him now?

The statement seems right on target.

Meet the People Who Were Passed Over for Obama

Sima Samar, women's rights activist in Afghanistan: “With dogged persistence and at great personal risk, she kept her schools and clinics open in Afghanistan even during the most repressive days of the Taliban regime, whose laws prohibited the education of girls past the age of eight. When the Taliban fell, Samar returned to Kabul and accepted the post of Minister for Women's Affairs.”

Ingrid Betancourt: French-Colombian ex-hostage held for six years.

“Dr. Denis Mukwege: Doctor, founder and head of Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo. He has dedicated his life to helping Congolese women and girls who are victims of gang rape and brutal sexual violence.”

Handicap International and Cluster Munition Coalition: “These organizations are recognized for their consistently serious efforts to clean up cluster bombs, also known as land mines. Innocent civilians are regularly killed worldwide because the unseen bombs explode when stepped upon.”

“Hu Jia, a human rights activist and an outspoken critic of the Chinese government, who was sentenced last year to a three-and-a-half-year prison term for 'inciting subversion of state power.'”

“Wei Jingsheng, who spent 17 years in Chinese prisons for urging reforms of China's communist system. He now lives in the United States.”

I don't usually agree with Steele, but it's quite obvious that this prize was not awarded for anything that Obama has actually accomplished, or even tried to accomplish.

Of course, after giving the award to terrorists, there's little reason to take the Nobel Committee seriously anymore

For once, amidst all comments which I'd previously read from Michael Steele, his latest-concerning the President winning the Nobel Peace prize-I'm inclined to agree that there are other people far more deserving of a peace prize. I'd like to add that the majority of Republicans & Democrats voted to give the authority to declare war on a sovereign country, which is illegal according to the U.S. constitution, whereas it is only legal for our federal congress to commit to such an act.Once again, the congress will most probably thwart such responsibility by again leaving the decision to escalate the illegal war in Afghanistan to the president, and thereby temporarily appease those armaments contractors which generally donate the most to various members of the Senate and House finance committee. It is a sad state of affairs when monies which could be appropriated for a single payer system for the public, are again used instead, for the production of even more weapons of mass destruction, without of course, any complaint from the Nobel Peace prize winner at the White House or Michael Steele.

By the way, the Twin Towers were destroyed mostly by educated upper middle class, and rich class Saudis, not the people of Afghanistan. I'm almost sure the majority of the people there at this point in time, wish some of the people who built the U.S. military base named Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, had never visited their country.

The Nobel commitee was quite clear on why they chose President Obama. They said they chose him for the hope he inspires in people, and for his belief in diplomacy–actually TALKING to one's enemies in an effort to resolve issues, and not just blasting them off the map. (diplomacy, of course is something the conservatives make fun of, in their minds it somehow equals “conspiring with the enemy”) –the Nobel commitee also said he has restored America's standing around the world. So I don't think this award was so much given for some specific deed wrought, but for the spirit of the man and what he inspires in others.

I wonder, is there ANYONE that the conservatives will NOT attack in their anti-Obama frenzy? They are certainly alienating a LOT of groups, (slinging insults at anyone that likes or agrees with the president). When the dust settles they may find things rather lonely on their side of the line. People's memories can be VERY long, and an insult remembered for a lifetime.

kmofwi – You nailed it right there. Everything the conservative politicians are doing right now is ALL geared toward 2012. They don't care what it's doing to the country or how it affects American citizens, their sole purpose is to block, hinder or stall anything positive the president tries to accomplish. They will even vote against things they KNOW would be good for the nation, just for spite. The LAST thing they want is for Obama to accomplish anything that might make him “look good”.
Their hope is that when the 2012 election rolls around, they can say Look, what has he accomplished? They will of course, leave out any mention of them blocking him at every turn. They no longer care about the good of the citizens, they only care about themselves and “re-capturing” power.

Progress Party and Christian Democratic Party are more right, than left!

The Progress Party founded as “Anders Lange’s Party for a Strong Reduction in Taxes, Duties and Public Intervention”, is a Norwegian right-wing political party.

Christian Democracy is often considered conservative on cultural, social and moral issues and progressive on fiscal and economic issues. In Europe, where their opponents have traditionally been secularist socialists, Christian democratic parties are moderately conservative overall.

WHAT HAS OBAMA DONE? Humm let's think about that?

IRAQ THEN: When Bush was in office we had no way out of Iraq, no time-line, increased violence and 12 billion a month being spent.
IRAQ NOW: Most troops out this month. Taliban saying they won't attack us. Iran saying Obama doing good job. Focus in Afghanistan where Osama is.

ECONOMY THEN: Bush basically tried to bankrupt america saying our personal banks would close the next day and our jobs would fire us because they can't get a loan to make payroll.
ECONOMY NOW: Up 2800 points, lost 150+ jobs instead of 700+ per month. Corporations giving bonuses because the recession is over. Cash for Clunkers, which everyone and their mama applied for. And unemployment benefits extended almost 24 weeks in total.

HEALTHCARE THEN:Bush had no healthcare plan. Or a domestic agenda for that manner, remember he was at war his whole presidency.
HEATHCARE NOW: 100% Focus on reducing my premiums, reducing my costs, and giving me better healthcare. Bill to pass next week. Now that's service!

EQUAL RIGHTS THEN: Women getting paid less for the same job. Blacks looked as nice, but not leaders or corporate material. Welfare recipients are beggars.
EQUAL RIGHTS NOW: Law passed for equal pay for women. US Apology to African Americans for slavery and its reprecussions and hurtful financial prejudices. An example, for all to look at to say: hey, a black man thats not a drug dealer, rapper, or basketball player, who speaks good english and has a black wife and no kids by another woman – now that's a darn role model!! And he writes books too. His wife is even smarter then him!! and she's a lawyer from harvard.

Wow, and to think, he did this all in a year. Not to mention using the talents of Bill and Hillary Clinton to completely unite the democratic base and have the muslim world around us saying – Obama's a great guy!

Republicans, I love it: keep diggin your political grave!

Wow, that Obamacorn guy seems to know more than you other folks about Norway’s poltical parties. I couldn’t find Norway on a map myself, and shame on you all.

Both sides in this post are polarizing and rude to their political opponents. It is no wonder why our country’s unity is a dying thing. For hundreds of years Americns have disagreed on how to get things done, but only recently, with the media and internet to stir things up, have we begun belittleing each other in this awful way. You want to change your opponents hate, fearmongering, and idealogy? CHANGE YOURSELF FIRST.

We are all Americans, we all love our families, we all share the same opportunity in this country which is unequaled in the world. Our country is in a state of emergency, our leaders cant think straight because they are afraid of ending up in a blog somewhere. Give it a rest.

Maybe Obama doesnt deserve the Peace Prize, but what does it hurt? HOw can a republican even care in anymore than a passing way? ANSWER: they dont. I doubt Steele would even be able to name a committee member if asked before this happened. Now he’s outraged? Cmon.

And maybe Obama is a socialist. But he did get elected. And now he is OUR president. Give him a chance, and if you don’t like his plans let your representative know. If you do that, then the hatred and the garbage that is tossed back and forth between half educated wanna-be-politicians can fade and we can get back to whats important in life – our relationships and families.

I can’t take all the mental arrogance you all show to each other.

The Nobel Prize Committee set a new standard for groups like the Motion Picture Academy, in that an Oscar no longer requires the winner to give a great performance, but intend to give one. The Nobel Prize was once given to people who do something great; while today just saying one wants to do something great is enough to win. The Nobel Prize Committee is trying to shape future reality by recognizing intent to do something they admire, such as equalizing America with the third world. The Oscars could be awarded to actors who never perform, but tell others they would like to. Obama, then, should also be given an Oscar too. The question remains what has Obama done to deserve a Nobel Peace Prize?
Remember were comparing him to Martti Ahtisaari who spend three decades solving international conflicts, Jimmy Carter who spend decades to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development, Martin Luther Kind Jr., Woodrow Wilson, and Theodore Roosevelt. All these men spent years and years struggling for peace and fighting for peace. Obama hasnt been President for a year yet he has done so much for peace. How many treatys has he signed and what actions of peace have been put into place because of him directly? If he deserved this Peace Prize we as Americans would be proud of our President not questioning why he deserves it.

Im sorry I didnt know Bush started the war I guess I thought Al-Queda started the war when they killed almost 3,000 Americans during 9-11 and injured around 6,000. I guess Bush should has just said oh well and not gone to war. Maybe after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor Franklin Roosevelt should have said oh well we will just take it instead of entering WWII. Did Bush mishandel how the war was conducted of course, but he had to take action. The President doesn't have anything to do oil regulations OPEC does. And the government also doesnt regulate the banks and who they can and cannot lend money to. We fell into this depression because of greedy bankers and idiot people who are not satisfied with can afford. Thats great that you can afford to go to school. There has always been a way for anybody to go to school if they put their mind to it. There are many scholarship and financial aid money to help those who need it. However, I find it hilarious how everytime Bush was criticized it was because he was an idiot and he was, but everytime someone criticies Obama their a racist. lol. And if a black person critcizes Obama he's not black? Whats that about? And for someone who calls themselves Christian maybe you need to read the Bible; Matthew 7:1-2 “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.” Who are you to condemn others to hell? Oh and its not because of Obama that I can log online and say what I want that would be my first amendment right. You know the one my founding fathers gave this country, pretty sure Obama wasn't around then. Maybe you should keep up better with politics present and past.

It is not for americans to question, who gets the nobel peace prize. The winner is determined by a committee created to research the effects of people's actions as it pertains to peace, seeking peace, and what influence they have had in reaching a more peaceful world. What has Obama done: He has clearly communicated to the world that working together for the benefit of all our nations and people is our direction and how we are choosing to lead and think. No other President has expressed this same ideal, and no other president has been commended as this president has with regard to his foreign policy stance. He has affected the perception of the world. That is what he did. His winning of the nobel is therefore, much deserved.

What has Michael Steele accomplished? He appears to be one of the most self aggrandising persons on the political stage. He sucks up to the likes of Limbaugh and others who would probably pass him on the street. His nomination was one of obvious calculation in the election of Barack Obama. If he has redeeming qualities, they are well hidden.

Michael Steele represents the sickness that may take this country down; if we slip into second class status, it will be because of the Republicans who would rather damage Obama than have any pride in our president, and he is the president for all of America. Have they no shame?

“What has President Obama actually accomplished?” He was elected president of the United States of America, a nation with a marked history of slavery, racism, and xenophobia (read: fear of immigrants). With a name like Barrak Obama, that's a pretty damn big accomplishment.

Michael Steele is exactly right. I'm glad he had the courage to say it like is. The Nobel prize was given to our president because they want to pad the way for a more globalist world. I'm very angry because I believe it puts the president in a bad spot unless he really wants to push their agenda; I hope not.
The fact of the matter is, Europe has been jealous of America because of her exceptionalism.

Yeah, yeah, they're just jealous, that's why they give Obama the award. No wait, they did it to co-opt him. No wait, they did it because we're glad he 'lost' the Olympics. Yay!. No, wait: Boo!
See how confused you rightwingers are? You don't know whether to shit or go blind, these days. Pathetic.

Looks like you're not on the same page as the Obama-basher who says here that Ahtisaari is as undeserving of his prize as Obama is. Remember, the beneficiaries of Ahtisaari's efforts included Muslims, so he is a bad man like Obama is. See, my point is that your sentiment about Obama's unworthiness is shared by ignoramuses and bigots.

sarabing – President George W Bush lied to the Americian people at worst OR didn't seek the real truth about Iraq before invading it. He kept changing the reasons we were going to war in Iraq.

” I guess Bush should has just said oh well and not gone to war. Maybe after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor Franklin Roosevelt should have said oh well we will just take it instead of entering WWII.”

In your analogy, FDR would attack Iraq after Pearl Harbor because Iraq was just as involved in Pearl Harbor as 9/11.

Exactly, kevinmccoy! Give him time to DO SOMETHING before nominating him less than two weeks after his inauguration. And now he has been announced as the winner just after he missed a big opportunity to ACT to get the U.N. Security Council to act on Iran's illegal uranium enrichment. I am no fan of Jimmy Carter, but he did something to earn his Noble prize, and perhaps Obama will, too, given time, as you say. At best, awarding Obama is premature; at worst, it's wishful thinking..

I never said Bush was a good president but he shouldnt be blamed for all the things chris brown blamed him for. Typical politics for the president to change his reasons. when the americans dont like what hes doing of course hes going to change his reasons. Is this right? hell no, but who isnt going to do that. And seriously I cant figure out if im the dumb one or not but your analysis of my analogy sucks. I have no clue as to what ur point is. Care to explain better.

I am an independent, who leans toward the Republican principle of smaller, clean government and fiscal responsibility. That said, I think it is sad that Republican leaning people keep sniping at the opposition about the wrong things. Obama did not seek the Nobel Peace Prize. It is not his fault he was awarded it. Let's not criticize him for something he did not control or seek.

Republicans should remember why they lost Congressin 2006, and the Presidency in 2008. Republcans deserved to lose. Under Republican leadership and Bush we had record (for that time) deficits, unreasonable subsidies to special interests, including a $300 billion farm subsidy bill, record earmark spending ($45 billion in 2006) that was full of corrupt special interest favors slipped in at the last minute without transparency. Republicans broke their promises of smaller government and fiscal restraint and observing term limits as pledged by many Republicans in 1994. Republicans accomplished nothing for health care and Social Security reform during the many years they were in power. Republicans should concentrate on getting more ethical, competent candidates elected to the Senate and House as opposed to Tom Delay, Denny Hastert, Don Long, Ted Stevens, John Ensign (womanizer who preaches family values and doesn't practice them) and others. The Republicans should clean house of bad politicians in their party and work to demonstrate constructive actions and stand by their promises.

MR. STEEL CHECK YOUR SELF. IF PRESIDENT OBAMA HAD NOT BEEN ELECTED YOU WOULD NOT BE IN A POSITION TO SPEAK FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.YOU ENTERED YOUR POSITION AS THE GOLDEN BOY REBOUND FOR A LOST ELECTION.

THE PRESIDENT ACCEPTED THE NOBLE PEACE PRIZE IN A VERY GRACIOUS MANNER. PRESIDENT OBAMA DESERVED A MOMENT OF RESPECT,UNDERSTANDING, JOY AND ACCEPTANCE.THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE IS A GREAT “MEDAL'' HONOR FOR PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.HE DID NOT CAMPAIGN ,LOBBY.APPLY, OR ASK FOR THIS PRIZE.

MR. STEEL WHAT WILL YOUR LEGACY BE? I GUESS YOU KNOW THE WORLD DOES NOT HAVE A PRIZE TO GIVE YOU. THERE IS NO PRIZE FOR HATE MONGERING ESTABLISHED IN THE DARK SPIRIT OF SEPARATISM.

WELL, I'M NOW SURE YOU ARE ONE OF THE REASON MANY YOUNG AFRICAN- AMERICAN AND WHITE REPUBLICANS HAVE JOINED THE DEMOCRATS. YES, THEY LEFT THE REPUBLICAN PARTY AFTER THE ELECTION.THEY LEFT YOU AND RUSH THE RADIO CLOWN THAT REFUSES TO UNDERSTAND THAT OUR PRESIDENT IS WORKING TO BUILD A BETTER AMERICA FOR ALL PEOPLE. EVEN THE WHIPPED REPUBLICAN JOHN MCCAIN HAS MORE RESPECT FOR THE PRESIDENT AND MORE CLASS THAN YOU.

KEEP ON ! KEEP UP YOUR IRRELEVANT REPUBLICAN FOOLISHNESS. KEEP MAKING UNKIND,DEROGATORY COMMENTS SPAWN FROM A MYCELIUM OF UNCOMMON SENSE. KEEP ON! Okay, if Obama really deserves his Nobel, why can't any of his defenders, name anything he's actually accomplished? The insinuation that Michael Steele doesn't have a right to comment on this fact is the supreme, double standard, hypocrisy. How could liberal detractors accuse Mr Steele of not being worth the party chairmanship? Certainly the qulaities of a party chair are by nature, not a matter of public knowledge. What has any party chair of either party for the past 50 years done to merit their election? The job description includes the ability to coordinate behind the scenes without a public bruhaha. All of this discussion of race is the result of America's burden of guilt more than fear or equality or any such ideals. If you don't believe me, just think back to the election and try to remember how many times you heard anyone ask a black American who they were voting for? It's not hateful to look at candidates with a judgemental eye. We need to be more discerning in our choices. America won't really be equal until more people have the courage to stop being politically correct and point it out when a minority candidate is not qualified, as President Obama is not qualified for the office he holds. He is a great campaigner, but doesn't know how to function once elected. For all his talk, he did nothing as senator. He missed several votes important to causes he was supposedly supporting. He built no coalitions. So far, he's just gone 'round the world apologizing for America.Isn't that special? Face it, we just need better candidates, be they black, white or purple.Based on the number of requestrs for contributions I get VS previous party chairs, Mr Steele is more qualified for his office than the president is for his. And if you think the republicans elected a black national chairman, you're contradicting your own arguments. Why would a figurehead black man hold sway in a party that is conservative and accused of ignoring minorites? As a lifelong republican, I really haven't seen race as an issue. AT ALL. At least not in the groups I've been involved with. They have honestly tried to find qualified candidates. Period. Be they male, female, black, white, hispanic, atheists, catholic or whatever. That is the kind of goals I'd hope we'd all spire to.

The Nobel Prize for Obama has turn out to be a war at home. The real question – like it or not is- what exactly has Obama done to deserve it? Or is it just another leftist way of handouts? Mr. Steele is correct on that matter – you need to do something good for such award – unfortunately many people don’t seem to grasp the concept (bummer).
I’m only asking you to think about this for one minute. What would Obama done different if he was the president when 9/11 occurred? (Or is that too much for a Nobel Prize?) Well, I really don’t want to even think about it, because I know what would it happened NOTHING! Think about that for a minute, Obama has done nothing and history will judge him better than me or any other American, but Americans voted, and democracy obey the “Vox populi, vox Dei” principle. But, that fact does not make it right!! Or Germany were correct when (almost 90 percent) of Germans approved Hitler intentions?
This is the biggest nightmare that ever happen to America; all these democrats with no idea what they want voted for a man that is a good “Orator” for lack of better terms and that is it.
I said this before; history will speak up her peace, and all of us Americans may not like to hear what history is about to tell us on 2012 or 2016.
May God bless America and you all

Remember Rumsfeld asked “…Are we capturing, killing or deterring and dissuading more terrorists every day than the madrassas and the radical clerics are recruiting, training and deploying against us?” President Obama is trying to make it harder for the radical clerics. This will help our armed forces. This is a different approach than President Bush took. I pray that it helps.
