2005: Helps end 30 years of fighting between Aceh rebels and the Indonesian government
2002 onwards: UN special envoy for the humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa
2001: Arms inspector in Northern Ireland conflict
1999: Helps bring end to conflict in Kosovo and in 2005 is appointed UN special envoy for final status talks
1990: Heads UN operation that brings independence to Namibia

First the nomination is not recognizing his presidency. Your hate to his position blinds you to the words that are coming out his mouth. You should focus on facts instead of your biases, nominations for the prize had to be postmarked by February 1, only 12 days after Obama took office. The committee sent out its solicitation for nominations last September, two months before Obama was elected president.
But its ok, your attitude only reflects the level of intellect you have. Your biases only reflect your way of thinking.

Last year, the global warming spokesperson won for being a spokesperson. This year, a president who has been in office less than a month was awarded the prize. The international joke that the Nobel Peace Prize has become now has a punchline. How ridiculous.

Well you sure showed your true colors with the remark about Ahtisaari and the 'rape of Serbia'. Most of us seem to remember the rape occuring when Serbian ethnic cleansers raped and killed muslims in Kosovo. Ahtisaari won the award for his plan to prevent this obscenity from happening again. If that's your values and you despise Obama, I think I can draw further conclusions from that set of facts.

Rightwingers revel in US's role as the most powerful nation on the planet, yet never give a thought to the responsibilities this position casts upon us. Although our presence around the world is ubiquitous the typical 'winger couldn't give a flying f*ck what anyone 'outside' thinks of us, just as long as they fear us. “No, more like respect us” responded one 'winger. Well guess what? After 8 years of GW/Cheney, respect is a little thin on the ground out there. If you are oblivious to our image abroad then you are certain to have been blindsided by, not only the Nobel, but how the world views Obama overall, esp on the heels of Bush. You righties can no longer control the will of the US voter, so you cannot even BEGIN to figure out this Int'l relations thing. Just sit it out for 4 years and try again in '12.

Since when does the committee make a decision based on ideas. There has been no measurable action. His own country is increasingly dissatisfied with his all talk and no action brand of politics. Unemployment continues to rise, government spending has not been decreased, and there has been no change in status in the war. None. This award was based on his ideals, not his actual leadership capabilities. If this had been awarded after he had time to actually earn it (like Carter) then this would be different. This is nearly impossible to defend, and impossible to swallow. I think it belittles the award for the many deserving winners over the years, and for any others that follow.

Wei Jingsheng, who spent 17 years in Chinese prisons for urging reforms of China’s communist system. — not as worthy as Barack Hussein Obama. (Not to mention the symbolic value of awarding a Chinese dissident on the 20th Anniversary of the Tianenmen Square Massacre.)

Greg Mortenson, founder of the Central Asia Institute has built nearly 80 schools, especially for girls, in remote areas of northern Pakistan and Afghanistan over the past 15 years – not as worthy as Barack Hussein Obama.

Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad, a philosophy professor in Jordan who risks his life by advocating interfaith dialogue between Jews and Muslims, also not as worthy as Barack Hussein Obama.

Afghan human rights activist Sima Samar. She currently leads the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission and serves as the U.N. special envoy to Darfur and is apparently also not as worthy as Barack Hussein Obama.
