Rand Paul Hauls $1.1m for Senate Race

The son of Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.) handily beat Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson (R) in the first quarter, raising $1.1 million to Grayson’s $600,000. As I noted when Paul first got into the race, his ability to raise a lot of money from a national base is going to muddle Republicans’ strategy in the state–the party has not made an endorsement, but Grayson polls better than Paul at the moment.

Grayson polls better than Paul at the moment only because they don't know Rand Paul and haven't yet focused on the pro-bailout crowd supporting Grayson. Out of the 23 senators hosting a fundraiser for Grayson in DC last month, 17 voted for the bailout.

I think Kentucky can connect the dots.

Mr. Weigel, you made a mistake.

1. Paul raised over one million in the third quarter of 2009, not 1.1 million.

2. Paul has raised over 1.1 million since starting his campaign.

3. Trey Grayson has not released his third quarter numbers yet. The $600,000 figure comes from Grayson's second quarter (which ended on June 30th.) It is unclear how much he has raised in the third quarter (July 1st – September 30th)…but he by law has to disclose that information by October 15th.

4. Paul's over one million very likely beat outs Grayson's third quarter total.

5. Grayson polls better (SuveryUSA: Grayson: 37%; Paul: 26%), but as WHAS reported; that is excellent news for Paul's campaign to be that close this early to what is essentially the incumbent. Also, Grayson's camp, despite the lead, denied the numbers because of Paul's strong showing (Google search: Rand Paul phantom number).

Youre so wrong and biased.
Grayson also has a National base. The NRSC has endorsed Rand Paul's opponent Trey Grayson. 23 US Senators from many States who voted for the Banker bailout support Mr Grayson. The Bailout voters even hosted a fundraiser for Grayson but Rand Paul raised more money on the fundraiser day.
Trey is a former Bill Clinton delegate whos a true bi-partisan candidate that will work on supporting our Commander in Chief.
Trey Grayson is the establishment candidate. Sadly for Rand Paul this is the year of the establishment candidate.
btw Rand Paul is a kooky right winger who is trying to betray America.
A good American would tow the party line and support the favored candidate so that he doesnt cause divisions within our beloved party.
A good American should also not criticize a war time president. Trey Grayson will be the better man because he supports the Commander in Chief and the necessary banker bailouts just like he supported Bill Clinton in 1992.

Vote for the Patriot Act
Vote Trey Grayson for US Senate

Yes, Paul is very strong in the third quarter. Of course, Terry Grayson hasn't released his third quarter numbers yet.

TreyGraysonSupporter has it right.

If you support government bailouts and the patriot act, vote for Grayson.

If you support freedom and The Constitution, vote for Paul.

This reads like a list of reasons not to vote for Trey Grayson.

Its great that Paul was able to raise that much money, but am wondering if he'll be able to pull anywhere near that in this quarter. While Paul's first major moneybomb raised $430,000 his latest was $180,000. I'm not trying to sound like a downer and even think he is a good candidate due to the reasons found at http://www.TreyGraysonforSenate.com which has a good comparison of the two.

We need real fiscal conservatives like Rand Paul in Congress, not RINOs that will bankrupt the country like Democrats, just a little slower.

Rand Paul is awesome.

We need somebody in office who will openly fight the establishment, and protect the people from it. Rand Paul is going to be a great Senator.

Wow. 1.1 million just for a Senate run! Rand Paul must be one of those guys who tells the truth or something.

This is confusing. The amount you give for Rand Paul, which you say is from the first quarter, is actually his total amount raised over both the second and third quarters. Rand's second quarter amount was $111,000, and his third quarter amount was a little over $1,000,000. But the amount you give for Grayson is just what he got in the second quarter. His third quarter earnings have not yet been revealed.

The thing that's going to kill Rand Paul is his history as an activist fighting for lower taxes. Most Kentuckians know that most of what the government does is great, and the government needs more tax revenue so it can't spend more–the current federal budget isn't nearly big enough. That's why in the end they'll vote for Grayson. He's just the kind of moderate Republican we need. He's a career politician with a long history of working to make the government do more, not less. And if you look at the support he has from high up in the Republican establishment, it reads like a who's who list of great tax-and-spend moderates. Trey Grayson will represent Kentucky with the kind of bipartisan spirit we need. If only there were more Republicans like him, Obama wouldn't have so much trouble getting his agenda through Congress.

I would posit nearly the opposite: That “most Kentuckians” have little interest in giving the hard earned fruits of their labor to corrupt, bloated, and grossly inefficient bureaucracies to waste on corporatism and cronyism. Rand Paul will be a godsend to the hard working people of Kentucky and the state will be an example for the other 49 states to follow.

Excuse me, sir. But those so-called corrupt, bloated, grossly inefficient bureaucracies happen to be the same institutions that brought us such things as cap-and-trade, the Bush bailout, the Obama stimulus, federal control over Kentucky schools through No Child Left Behind, and Medicare part D, which is about tied with Social Security as making up the largest portion of our federal government's nearly $100 trillion future liabilities. If it weren't for moderate Republicans like Grayson, we never would have gotten any of those things. Go ahead, vote for Rand Paul if you want, but don't come blaming us moderate Republicans when you end up stuck with too much freedom without having those bureaucracies hundreds of miles away managing their lives for them because Congress starts limiting its actions to those powers enumerated in that archaic Constitution of yours.

Raising money is a nessisary evil in a campaign. If it gets the establishment to pay attention then good enough. Yeah, Grayson does probably poll better right now because the election season hasnt even started. Grayson is a professional politician looking to make a career and Rand Paul is a private business owning citizen that is looking to turn this sinking ship called the Republican party around. (Rand also belives in term limits for senators) Lets all be grateful we dont have the same choices coming this next election. Look at Rand and his ideas, he wont have a problem facing the dems.

As a resident of the one party state of California, I gladly contributed to Rand Paul. Ron Paul was my horse in the last presidential election, even as a write in for the general election. It never entered my mind that I might be throwing my vote away. For me throwing your vote away is voting for any Democrat and 99% of the Republicans. It seems neither has any intention of adhering to the Constitution.

I don't see anything particularly wrong with “muddling” the “good old boy” country club politicians' strategy.
