The Campaign Against Kevin Jennings, Backfiring?
Friday, October 02, 2009 at 4:32 pm
Media Matters staff has been all over the manufactured scandal haunting Kevin Jennings, the U.S. Department of Education’s director of the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools–a.k.a the “safe schools czar.” Jennings, who is gay, has been a target for months, but the very belated discovery of an anecdote in his book “One Teacher in 10″–in which he was told of a young student’s affair with an older man, but didn’t report it–has burned up in the conservative press.
First, Media Matters confirmed that the student was of legal age when he came to Jennings. Now, the group has a statement that really couldn’t be better for Jennings:
I had no sexual contact with anybody at the time, though I was entirely legally free to do so. I was a sixteen year-old going through something most of us have experienced: adolescence. I find it regrettable that the people who have the compassion and integrity to protect our nation’s students are themselves in need of protection from homophobic smear attacks. Were it not for Mr. Jennings’ courage and concern for my well-being at that time in my life, I doubt I’d be the proud gay man that I am today.

Republicans and Fox News do not care about the ACCURACY of their accusations. Only that they put them out there into the world to wreak havoc in DECENT people's lives.
Definitely an all time low. Even for Republicans and Fox News.

But if Jennings had reported the information, we might have had the chance to bundle the lad off to a homo/intervention camp and cured him of his disease. Or we might have driven him to suicide. Either way, win/win for the Bachmann crowd, no?

One night I drove across a long bridge with a friend laying on the hood of my car when I was 16. As far as I know that was not illegal, but it sure was stupid. All of the discussion I am hearing about on this matter revolves around if it was statutory rape and did Jennings have a responsibility to alert the authorities.
What this should be about is the safety of the child (yes,16 is still a child). Do we not understand the perils of a young boy being in a bus station restroom looking for sex?
Now what if the end of this story was not “Brewster” praising Jennings, but instead we find out that he continued in this behavior and was found to have been brutally raped and murdered?

Ummm, KDB800. Did you purposely misunderstand the article? Mass. considers 16 the age of legal consent.

So, no matter what gender or sexual orientation you are, it's OK for an older adult to take adantage of a 15 or 16 year old? And then your teacher/mentor at school not report it? I am not a republican OR work for FOX, and I think it is outrageous AS A PARENT that Jennings did not report the incident and go after the older man. This is like saying parents should be friends to their kids instead of parenting them. Teachers can only be a friend to a point, then their responsibility as a teacher needs to kick in. I believe he did this young man a grave injustice. Mr. Jennings gave the impression to that young man that what he was doing was OK. I say it was not OK. At 16 you are not capable mentally or emotionally to realize the full consequences of your actions. I know I wasn't. Why didn't he council him on trying to wait til he found a young man more near his own age that he could have a decent, loving relationship with? Why didn't he tell him that he is worth so much more as a human being than to degrade himself like that? Why didn't he try to help the boy rise above his feelings of worthlessness? I know that alot of people are against him because he is gay. That is a very ugly fact. But this does not excuse the fact that what Mr Jennings did in his past he should be held accountable for if he is to hold public office within the schools system. ESPECIALLY if it's the school system. I have a twin gay brother that is VERY leberal, and he feels that Mr Jennings should not be involved with the public schools either. I think the cause is very admirable. We do need to teach EVERYONE to be civil and nice, no matter what your race, gender, sexual preference, religious preference, etc. But because of Mr Jennings' ties to the Massachussetts 2000 scandal, Bill Ayers, his position with his prior student, and his many comments over the years about his hatred towards Christians, I strongly feel he is not the one for the job. How can someone that has very publicly stated his hatred towards a certain group of people teach others not to hate? That is what it comes down to for me.

What I find most disturbing is the way this creep just assumed and asked the kid “so who is he?” based on a 'hunch'.
That is extremely reckless. I bet he asked every male student the same question. He just assumes everyone is gay.
I wonder who many kids this guy humiliated and violated with his disgusting homo-centric attitude.

dale8, No, I stated what I read from the excerpt in the book. “Brewster” was 15. If in reality, “Brewster” was 16 and of legal age, then Jennings embellished his story to make it more palatable to the readers, Still as an teacher/mentor Jennings had the moral responsiblity to correct the potentially dangerously behavior (and do not start with the condom) of hanging around bus station restrooms looking for sex. Spin it as you will, this story is about a person put in charge of “School Safety” that does not counsel students on safety. Not to mention his complete disregard for school rules.

All you have to do is look as those photographs of Jennings for a few seconds to see that there's something wrong with the guy.
They're all staged photos of him alone around schools and playgrounds with young children, he's striking all of these weird poses, and he's not even smiling or anything.
In short, he gives off that unmistakable creepy vibe of someone that I don't want anywhere near my children.

By calling homosexuals indecent, you are proving your lack of decency.

There are, no doubt, worse people out there than Jennings. Dahmer. Gacy. Manson.
Still, I don't think Jennings stands out on any parents' “Ten Best Adult Males” list.
Given this guy is NOT a role model for adulthood, WHAT IN THE HELL IS HE DOING IN THE GOVERNMENT IN CHARGE OF SCHOOL SAFETY PROGRAMS ?????????
Some of you seem to think that some new (maybe phony) report the kid was 16, not 15, matters since that would mean, if true, the kids was not legally raped. ARE YOU STUPID???
My guess is these weirdos do not have kids and simply so not GET the notion of protecting kids from predators. Jennings is either a predator himself or a predator-lover. Either way, the guy is poison. Not only dump him, flush the weirdo from society. We have enough trouble without animals like Jennings running around.

And what about videos of Glenn Beck and photos of Mitch McConnell? The photographs I've seen of Jennings look perfectly normal to me. but I am not a homophobe.

After watching these videos you will know what they mean by Safe School Czar. He is trying to make it safe for Homosexuality in our Schools. I was able to get some good footage on this guy. He wants to bring change into public schools to change the way society looks at homosexuality and he wants to do it by teaching our kids and teachers about homosexuality. There is 8 videos take the time to watch these video so you are aware of what the Obama Admin is trying to do to our kids.

Well, well, well. Somebody needs to check their facts. The “legal age of consent” in Massachusetts, according to statute, not opinion, is 18.
Of course, the left drooling part of the media, and the HObama advocate choir, will simply take the word of a now “happy gay man” rather than check the facts themselves. What a shock, eh?
Comment posted October 3, 2009 @ 12:24 pm

Why then we'd all scream “HATE CRIME!” and “Homophobia!” and demand that the gay hating, probably gay themselves but repressed perpetrators be executed without a trial.
Wouldn't we.

Uh, the age of “legal consent” as you put it, in Massachusetts by statute, not opinion, is 18. Try looking it up. Get the facts. Broaden your horizons. Stop being stupid.

@undergraduate: Another lie to keep the smear machine running? You should be ashamed of yourself. The legal age of consent in Massachusetts is indeed _16_ and NOT 18.
Comment posted October 3, 2009 @ 2:23 pm
This is the problem I have with the arguments for Jennings. We can play “what if”. Such as, What if it was a straight teacher talking to a straight 15/16 yo student about traveling into the city to a bus station looking for sex. My issue with this (and I think I have made this clear, but let me say it again) is not that this is a gay issue and being gay does not preclude Jennings from the position. What precludes Jennings from the position is that his actions as a teacher could have cost this boy his life. It is a blatant disregard for the safety of the child.
From the standpoint of “Brewster” being conflicted over his sexual preference, I agree it is a terrible situation probably without a solution. Damned if you do, damned if you don't when dealing with this aspect. But, still Jennings let did not stop this boy from reckless behavior. This is not the person that I would want in the government directing the system of providing safety in our schools.
Comment posted October 3, 2009 @ 3:02 pm
Has Jennings himself not admitted he did this? How convenient for “Brewster” to step forward at this time to clear things up. This is confirmed by Media Matters.
If I happened as the anonymous statement above states, why did Jennings admit to not handling it well?

WASHINGTON (CNN) — A former student of an Obama Administration official is coming to his defense, as critics seek to use a 20-year-old incident to call for the official's resignation.
Kevin Jennings, who heads the Department of Education's Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools, is under fire for counseling advice he gave a teenage gay student more than two decades ago.
Conservative groups charge that Jennings, who is openly gay, condoned statutory rape and child molestation. That's in reference to an incident in 1988 when Jennings, who was a teacher at the time, did not tell authorities that a 16-year-old student revealed to Jennings that he'd had sex with an older man.
undereducated, you have your “hate” on.

Well, you are certainly an indecent example of one, as are Micheal Savage, Larry Craig, Mark Foley, Ted Haggard, Tammy Bruce, Hal Turner, Sean Hannity, and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. But there is nothing “abnormal” about same-sex attraction. It isn’t “normal” in the sense that it is relatively rare, but it isn’t terribly uncommon and occurs throughout nature.
By the way, you’re human garbage.

Maybe. I thought that was a pretty desperate and repulsive, if amusing, political attack in the last campaign, though not as bad as McConnell's accusation that his opponent was responsible for killing veterans.
All I know is that McConnell's wife screams “beard.”

Oh and since I am sure that you don't know, “SAFE SCHOOLS” is a term coined by this idiot that actually refers to pro-homosexuality in schools. What a joke for this country! I am pissed!

Is that the best excuse you have for this idiot. So, you think that our school age children need to be taught homosexual sex education. You people have lost you minds. I guess you would be one of those people that support not having prayer in schools but you think that this is OK. Anybody that thinks this guy should have anything to do with schools is a sick sick individual. Keep drinking the cool aid.
