Grassley Blocks Obama Nominee

Byron York reports that Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) is blocking the all-important nomination of Alan Solomont, the president’s nominee for ambassador to Spain. The reason: “retaliation for what Grassley says is the administration’s stonewalling of Congress over documents relating to the firing of AmeriCorps inspector general Gerald Walpin.”

York sums up the Walpin case in his article; the gist is that Walpin, a Bush appointee, was fired after recommending action against the Democratic mayor of Sacramento. AmericaCorps claims Walpin was failing to perform his job; Grassley has demanded proof that the firing wasn’t political. And so as he performs a pivotal role in health care negotiations, Grassley is shooting overhead at the administration.

If a Bush appointee was performing political attacks, and is fired for doing so, that is political?

Is this what we want? Senators seeking senseless, disconnected revenge?

Retaliation? Really? How old are we?

Other commenters, I think you need to read the rest of the story before you jump on the “Republicans are whiners” bandwagon.

Please read the REST of the story before you comment…

Good for him. Nothing else should be done until something is done about the massive political corruption the president and his cronies transplanted when they came here from Chicago.

By the way, even though they've produced thousands of pages of nonsense bills–cap and trade, health care, stimulus, etc. Somehow they've neglected to produce ONE of the TWELVE appropriations bills due OCTOBER 1 to avoid government shutdown.

WHY do we pay them, again? WHY do we pay them STILL?!

Aww…give the guy a break. He just wanted to follow McCain's lead in alienating Spain, and “stand up to those who want to harm the United States.”, such as Spanish Prime Minister Zapatero. What could be more innocent?

Byron York must be having a slow news day, and Grassley is obviously desperate for attention having been finally ignored by Max Baucus, He cried for attention with this story back in June, then got all the attention with his disgraceful lies on “death panels,” and now that healthcare in the Senate is on its way without him (Snowe can't stand him apparently), he is back to latching on to this story.

That having been said, this story is a non-starter.

Stephen Goldsmith, a Republican and the AIG board's vice chair backed the termination of Walpin. Even the local District Attorney's office in 2008 found that Walpin's findings and accusations were overstated and out of proportion. Johnson was sanctioned, his association forced to give back any misused funds, and that was the end of it. In any case, the district attorney found that there was no intent of criminality, just sloppiness in how Johnson ran his association (or didn't run it as the case may be as he was too busy running for Mayor of Sacramento). Johnson's no babe in the woods, but neither is Walpin.

Seanmom, you are so right. This is the first time in the history of the US that the appropriations bills have not been done on time, so in less than 21 months the whole system has broken down. And exactly which Sentaors and Congressmen (who are supposed to pass these appropriations bills) are Obama's cronies from Chicago?

Has York read the US Atty's letter re Walpin? Has Grassley?

How dare they despoil innocent Washington, D.C., once as immaculate as virginal, white snow, with their dirty, dark Chicago street thuggery!?!? Oh, it is almost enough to give one a case of the vapors!

What happened to when political appointees were fired not for abuse of their position, violations of established guidelines, or poor job performance, but for just causes, like failing to prosecute Democrats, valid case or not, before elections, or not cupping Karl Rove's balls whilst giving him loving blow-jobs!? This is not my country, for I do not recognize it any longer.

Jason, if you're going to come on here and 'dis' Byron York, Grassley, and Walpin try to get at least some small part of your facts straight. Goldsmith was the CNCS vice chair (now Chair), not the AIG vice chair. The fact that he would 'back' Walpin's firing should come as no surprise – it was HIS organization that failed in its responsibility to oversee Americorp and the grants it made, so it was HIS failure that was at the heart of Walpin's criticism…get it? And it wasn't the “local District Attorney's office” that had anything to do with anything in this matter -it was the US ATTORNEY's office…get it? And Johnson's “organization” hasn't been “forced to give back any misused funds”; it has returned only a small portion of the misappropriated funds and will almost certainly default on paying another dime, so this is most certainly not “the end of it”…get it? The fact of the matter is that Walpin is a mental giant compared to all those involved in railroading him out of his job, and unlike mental midgets like you who run off at the mouth with little grasp of the facts, he did his homework to the nth degree and always knew EXACTLY what he was talking about. That having been cleared up, you ill-informed lefties may now resume your drivel.

Thank you for for not letting the Gerald Walpin story go away. I emailed my senator about it and He said everything was done correctly, I just don't believe it without supporting documents or transcripts from the meeting where he is accuse of being confused.
