Nothing Could Go Wrong With Turning Over the War to a War Criminal

For all this talk of strategic reevaluation of the Afghanistan war, The Washington Times puts forward a possibility that few have considered:
“If you support me, I will destroy the Taliban and al Qaeda,” Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum told The Washington Times in an interview at his northern stronghold. “I don’t want to be a minister, not even the defense minister. I need to be with my soldiers. Give me the task and I will do it.”
Yes, that Dostum. Who’s also that Dostum. In exchange for all your money, he’ll get rid of the Taliban and al-Qaeda for you. Why didn’t anyone think of this before?
There’s also this hilarious bit of color:
Pointing to a laminated picture of Gen. Tommy Franks hanging in his living room, he noted that Gen. Franks, former commander of Centcom, had called him a national hero for his role in helping oust the Taliban.
I do not think that proves the point Dostum wishes to prove.

Abdul Rashid Dostum fought alongside our troops against the Taliban, acting as guide and mentor for our soliders in the field. Before Americans arrived, his Northern Alliance resisted the Taliban when the rest of Afghanistan had capitulated. The allegations against Dostum have never been proved, but they echo endlessly in the media.
In any case, the war in Afghanistan will not be won over teacups – and it can only truly be won by Afghanis. Anything else is an imposition of American occupation on the country (cf. Iraq).
We are lucky that the interests of an effective commander like Abdul Rashid Dostum coincide with ours, and we must not waste this opportunity.
