Sen. Tom Coburn’s (R-Okla.) Chief of Staff: ‘All Pornography Is Homosexual Pornography’
Sunday, September 20, 2009 at 1:54 pm
One of the final events of the Values Voter Summit was a Saturday breakout session on “the new masculinity,” a wide-ranging topic that one speaker used to explain how any and all pornography could lead young people into homosexual lifestyles. That speaker was Sen. Tom Coburn’s (R-Okla.) chief of staff Michael Schwartz, a longtime conservative activist who has worked for the senator since 2005.
“Pornography is a blight,” Schwartz told an audience in a crowded room of the Omni Shoreham hotel. “It is a disaster. It is one of those silent diseases in our society that we haven’t been able to overcome very well. Now, I may be getting politically incorrect here. And it’s been a few years, but not that many, since I was closely associated with pre-adolescent boys, boys around 10 years of age. But it is my observation that boys of that age have less tolerance for homosexuality than just about any other class of people. They speak badly about homosexuality. And that’s because they don’t want to be that way. They don’t want to fall into it.”
Schwartz told the crowd about Jim Johnson, a friend of his who turned an old hotel into a hospice for gay men dying of AIDS. “One of the things he said to me,” said Schwartz, “that I think is an astonishingly insightful remark… he said ‘All pornography is homosexual pornography, because all pornography turns your sexual drive inwards.”
There were murmurs and gasps from the crowd. “Now, think about that,” said Schwartz. “And if you tell an 11-year-old boy about that, do you think he’s going to want to get a copy of Playboy? I’m pretty sure he’ll lose interest. That’s the last thing he wants! You know, that’s a good comment, it’s a good point, and it’s a good thing to teach young people.”
Here’s the final portion of Schwartz’s remarks.

Wouldn't turning your sexual drive inward make you an autosexual?

And this is why the religious right is a heaping pile of fail. You can make a man fear the brown people, make him upset at his tax rates, make him upset that the woman refuses to stay in the kitchen, but take away his porn and you've made a Libertarian or Democrat for life.

Reading between the lines, I suspect that Schwartz is telling us that he tried, and failed, to make young boys follow him into the men's room at the airport to meet Sen. Craig.
Precisely how many years has it been since this ADULT was “closely associated” with 10 year old boys? I'm 34. It has been 24 years since I've been in that position. Schwartz is stepping in it. Maybe if he wasn't so miffed that the youngsters rejected his offers of free candy and free G.I. Joe dolls in exchange for “two minutes in the closet,” he wouldn't be out making spoiled-red-meet speeches for the worst Senator in D.C. right now.

This is someone talking, but not really knowing WHAT he is talking about. What qualifies this guy to even think he knows anything about this? The worse thing is, he actually has an audience of people who may well go home thinking this is true.

It's good to be back, monkey99, thanks for asking. But it's sort of underwhelming to find out that Oklahomans haven't yet booted Coburn out of their midst. I spent my early childhood in OKC and my parents still have a house there.
Sad to be associated with that clog in the drain of a state. We're trying to flush all our country's sewage out to the Gulf of Mexico via Texas but somehow a lot of it gets stuck in Oklahoma.

“All pornography is homosexual pornography, because all pornography turns your sexual drive inwards.”
Not true. I just verified it. I descended into my PornVault after entering the various access codes and undergoing the retinal scan.
1. Those are images of women. Some of them are involved with other women, true. But all of the images, even the ones of women cavorting together, are designed to please the male eye. That means the pornography is heterosexual.
2. My sexual drive did not get turned inward because I saw pornography. My sex drive was inward and THEN I saw pornography, which made me realize how attractive naked women are. I promptly devoted my adolescence and adulthood to pursuing women or accumulating shiny things to attract them with. So I turned my sexual drive outward.
I don't think Coburn selected his chief of staff based on Scwhartz's discerning intellect. More likely, it was his demonstrated willingness to say absolutely anything that will get Coburn votes from his spooky-and-yet-hilarious conservative constituents.

So this is a “Values Voter Summit”. I guess the way these folks show their “Values” is by disregarding millions of Americans who pay their taxes and work hard. This is just embarrassing for the Republican party. The truth is that a vast majority of porn is heterosexual and I would like to know if Tom Colburn, Michael Schwartz, or ANY of the attendees at this summit have watched porn. I bet a majority of these “holier than thou” crowd have and won't admit it. The Republicans must be very desparate to stoop to such lows. Their run of the mill talking points are wearing thin and now they have to close out their “summit” with a low class comment from Sen. Tom Colburn's Chief of Staff. These “Independents” aka Republicans are crazy. If they can't make their racist comments, they will go to the homosexuals to dis. Keep it up and keep giving the liberals more chances to vote them out election after election with your absurdities. Also, I know you all keep saying that you have a lot of Blacks and Latinos in your “protests” and “summits”, but where are they? All I see are a bunch of bitter bigoted white Christian folks. Stick to your Fox channel “fair & balanced” news. Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, & Ann Coulter are so proud of all of you.

Patrick,
Of course they've seen porn. How else can they purport to know what it is they are talking about? It's all preposterous, you know. This, above all else they've misconstrued or deliberately lied about, they truly know.
They are, however, impotent (pun intended) to stop porn. It's like the Telescreen in “1984″, who's watching the watchers? They couldn't catch all us subversives. *Dream….the impossible dream…..*
As for Fixed News, they really ARE fixed! They got busted this weekend trumping up their own story. A Faux producer was caught red-handed (or how I like to put it, caught the dye bag square in the chest) at a “rally” or what ever they call these flea circuses, rousing the crowd before they filmed. The news media will probably be all over this Monday night.

Everyone should keep in mind that this clown is NOT a senator from Oklahoma, he's just a staffer. I think the staffer is fairly retarded if he thinks a “porn turns you gay” campaign is going to keep kids away from naughty pictures. But, it's a leap in logic to go from a staffer saying something at a conference to assuming that the Senator he works for is basing policy on it.
That said, Coburn has several characteristics that I find commendable. He has held a pretty aggressive stance against pork and earmarks, even before it became popular to take that stand (he was one of the few who stood up to Senator Stevens' Bridge to Nowhere appropriation back when that meant Coburn taking on his own party). But, Coburn does have an unfortunate tendency to mix policy positions and religious positions.

Sexual drive turned inward is clinical narcissism, not homosexuality. I'm gay, and although I don't mind masturbating occasionally, I prefer to have sex with my partner. And that's outward, not inward. But even when I've looked pornography, I was still focused outward — on one of the individuals on the screen. If the actor had been in the room with me, so much the better.

I was trying to understand Schwartz's point when he said that pornography turns a man's sexuality inward. What does “inward sexuality” mean? What would make “inward sexuality” unnatural or not beneficial? What is the relationship between homosexuality and “inward sexuality?” If you don't really spend any effort trying to identify the logical foundation behind Schwartz's statement, you'll probably think that he's incoherent. But looking more deeply at his foundation provides an opportunity for insight into what makes people like him (social conservatives) tick.
Here's the best explanation that I could come up with that might explain the premise of his statements. Does anyone disagree that this is probably Schwartz's foundation?
Given:
1. Sexual libido is the natural incentive for humans to procreate.
2. The natural context for procreation is marriage.
It therefore follows:
1. Sex-for-pleasure undermines the natural aspects of the libido, which is to foster procreation.
2. Masturbation supplants procreation.
3. Homosexuality supplants procreation.
4. Pornography, inciting masturbation, is unnatural because it undermines procreation.
5. Homosexuality, supplanting procreation, is unnatural because it undermines procreation.
6. Families foster social cohesion and economic stability.
7. Marriage fosters families.
8. Marriage fosters spiritual union between sexual partners.
9. Bastard offspring undermine social cohesion and economic stability.
10. Unrestrained libido produces spiritual discord between sexual partners and bastard offspring.
11. Unrestrained libido is spiritually unhealthy.
12. Unrestrained libido is socially unhealthy.

Whenever shit like this happens, I always wonder how Heterosexuals have gotten things so backwards.
Are most of you really too blind to see an inch in front of your face? Do you not see the world around you that you have created? And how is is that most of you seem to believe that you should be demonizing SEX, when it isn't sex that should be demonized at all. It is VIOLENCE.
Um, DUH.
Imagine what a different world this would have turned out to be if VIOLENCE were treated with the societal disgust that SEX has been. Think about that.
But then again, what can one expect from a group of people capable of creating a child with a variant sexuality, then abusing, torturing, raping and murdering (there is that pesky Hetero violence again!) those very children that YOU YOURSELVES created, due to a variant sexuality. Again, think about it. There are variations in EVERY AREA of humanity. Why would sexuality be any different? To an educated, thinking man, it is not any different.
So, while many of you make flippant comments here about this total tool of a human being, please remember that YOU are also participating in this abuse. Your silence is participation enough for this abuse to continue. These assholes scream about 'protecting the children' when in fact it is people just like Michael Schwartz that we must keep from poisoning our children's minds. He and his ilk are nothing more than Christian Jihadists. And they should be dealt with as such before they ruin this country.

Point 1, well-taken. Your Point 2 is the nonsense that many conservatives wish you to subscribe to. Nature does not understand or promote or have anything such as “marriage,” as sexual acts in nature are called “mating,” not “mating in wedlock.” Your remaining points are all spurious and inane. The idea of “bastard offspring” is in and of itself ludicrous. Do you think that when early humans mated, they all had marriage licenses? If so, who was the registrar? And how about the rest of the animal kingdom, of which we are but one species? Do elephants get married before a bull mounts a cow? Does that same bull only mount one cow and then ask for a cigarette? Your very disturbing reply is almost as comical and debased as the original comments by the clown Schwartz.
As a bumpersticker used to say: Keep your laws (and ideas about what is and isn't “moral” or “natural”) off my body.

In response to Zabaron's comment:
Keep in mind that marriage never required a license until about 150 years ago (you license things that you wish to restrict, and the point of requiring such licenses was to deter racial intermixing, and to preserve probate rights for widows). In the distant past, there may (or may not!) have been a marriage ceremony. Sometimes couples even got married merely by an agreement. Read the article “Taking Marriage Private” (Nov. 26, 2007) by NY Times writer Stephanie Coontz for the relatively recent history of now-politicized marriage.
Also keep in mind that Schwartz is speaking from a Biblical perspective. In Genesis 2:23-25, Yahweh describes sexual union in intimate terms (as opposed to biological terms), saying “the two shall become one flesh.” Thousands of years later, Jesus quotes from Yahweh (Matthew 19:3-6, Mark 10:2-9). The God of the Bible clearly intended sexual union to occur within marriage; if he is indeed the creator of nature, then he would define what is natural and unnatural concerning sex. If the Bible is one's standard of what is natural, then it's clear that sex was created for the purpose of marriage — precisely Schwartz's view.
As far as the idea of “bastard offspring” being just as well off as offspring from married parents, from a sociological perspective, I'll just state that the most crime-ridden areas of our country are those where there is no father. Maybe there's a mother and some extended family, but without a father and mother together, children are at risk of victimization from (and perpetration of) all kinds of violence (and are more likely than children of intact families to produce offspring outside of the context of marriage, perpetuating the cycle). I personally don't have a problem with the notion that marriage is the natural context for sexual union; natural means ideal and healthy.

OK this wasn't the brightest statement but lets look at the bigger picture….why the hell do we produce porn anyway? YES there is a demand for porn but there's also a demand for crystal meth should we make more of that? Porn is vile, it degrades women, displays acts of violence, and it misrepresents real sex with your spouse. We are a sex crazed society not because of nature but because of capitalism. The pursuit of money has replaced any morality that America had if there were ever such a thing. America is not a democracy it's a dictatorship and its dictator is money we need wake up! Capitalists are negatively shaping the minds of our people and we're too stupid to stop it. It's mere psychology…people model what they see therefore I would agree that porn influences homosexual activity because porn has founded an acceptance for the behavior and freely displays it. Most “free thinking Americans” think that porn is harmless but they're to “smart” to see it's true influence because they're in denile and probally watch it then base society off their own experience
Comment posted September 24, 2009 @ 5:26 am
Porn is like anything else>>>a choice. One can choose to watch it or not. It has no influence on”homosexual activity”. There is straight porn and gay porn. If you are trying to put a “moral Christian” twist to it all, I guess I would say that Christian movies are porn to me. They are based on capitalism just like any other form of entertainment. Christian movies and music create a mass of people in denial as well. Don't you think these high rolling ministries are all about money, not religion. They are promoting the pastor/preacher/minister who lives a high life style wearing very expensive suits and living in big fancy homes and driving expemsive cars. Christians are a worse influence on society than homosexuals. Christians “model” their lifes after the fake leaders who promote hate and bigotry!
Comment posted September 24, 2009 @ 12:15 pm
This is utterly sickening on so many levels. The entire argument is based on the assumption that both homosexuality and pornography are inherently wrong, which I believe to be false, and the notion that homosexuality is a choice, which I *know* is wrong.
While pornography can be trashy and in poor taste, it can also be beautiful and artistic, and is a valid aspect of sexual expression.
There's also the fact that this argument just doesn't make any damned sense! If porn involves both men and women interacting sexually, it's straight porn. There is just no getting around that. Trying to claim otherwise is like saying that masturbation is the same thing as gay or lesbian sex. It's ridiculous!
I could go on for pages, but I have more important things to do with my day. I just hope at least some people understand how absurd and harmful this sort of unfounded propaganda is.

Seriously. WTF is up with that? It's astonishing to think that these people (who think nothing of carpetbombing whole villages of screaming civilians – men, women, and children), all they can think of when asked to define evil is… sex.
Specifically the thought of two consensual adult men loving each other is so… horrifying that these republicans can't sleep until they've peeked into everyone's bedroom and saw for themselves that all is well and that everyone is only having sex for the purposes of having children… like they do. They barely have a sex life anyway and they're outraged that other people could actually be having sex for fun!
'What kind of satanism is this shiz!', says the white haired righteous old man who hadn't had sex with his wife in twenty years.
