Poll: Most South Carolina Voters Back Rep. Joe Wilson

By
Friday, September 11, 2009 at 10:22 am

Tom Jensen of Public Policy Polling sent out some explanatory tweets last night about a coming survey of South Carolina voters, asking them what they thought of Rep. Joe Wilson’s (R-S.C.) “You lie!” outburst.

After 145 interviews 66 say Wilson calling Obama liar makes them more likely to vote for him,” wrote Jensen. “59 say less likely, 20 say no diff.”

Then: “167 interviews- was Obama lying about covering illegal immigrants? 88 yes, 60 no, 19 unsure.”

The conclusion: “[B]ased on what we’re seeing so far sounds like Wilson’s constituents are with him on this one. The dial moved more toward people saying the incident made them less likely to vote for Wilson but still pretty evenly divided … Voters there do think Wilson’s action was inappropriate, but agree with the sentiment.”

Rep. Wilson was playing to his constituency. His action was very effective.

Remember, this is South Carolina –
don't believe in no stinkin' Union – Stars and Bars forever!
don't believe in no stinkin' evolution – damn monkeys!
don't believe in no stinkin' healthcare – I got mine (I think….maybe)!
etc., etc., etc.

Yep, he is a REAL representative.

What next a noose outside the White House? An apology? Please! Reverse this for ONE second. It's George W. Bush and congressman John Lewis yells out “You Lie”. Does anyone for ONE second think that EVERYONE would be calling for his resignation? For him to be silenced? Calling him a disgrace? Unpatriotic? Humilitating to our Commander In Chief? Be real and ask yourself what this is really all about!

Yes, it is rude to interrupt the President of the U.S., while speaking; however, Joe Wilson did shout out the truth.
This President has screamed and shouted and threatened the people of the U.S. (who, in a real democracy actually run the country), that they must DO AS HE SAYS OR ELSE!
We are tired of his ranting and raving and we expect Congress to stop passing emotional, pork-laden bills. READ this bill (I have) and realize that we need to have facts before action:
How many REAL Americans (not all the illegals) have NO access to ANY medical care? I think it would be found that most legal Americans have some form of medical care available. SO, if Congress is so eager to get into the medical care business (and every other business) why not create a “catastrophic fund” to assist folks needing some provable need on a one-time basis? I worked my entire career in medical care and the abuse in the system is horrific. What are shown as medical “needs” are quite frequently “wants”. If we cleaned up the waste in the system as it exists, there would be monies for care for more people.
If the President, Congress and the government employees gave up their cushy care, there would be monies to care for more people.
I'd like to see the President and Congress voluntarily cut their salaries and staffs before telling those of us who have worked long hours for little money, how to run our lives.
AND, lastly, we need term limits on Congress!

If you have a sense of history, this harkens back to Preston Brooks who beat Charles Sumner senseless on the senate floor. To beat all, and for the prize children – What state was Brooks from? Some things never change; just look at a map of voting patterns in 1860 and 2008 – should have let the lowly south go.

How do we even talk to Republicans when they're in such basic denials of reality? The bill they keep claiming hasn't been read specifically excludes illegal aliens, but Republicans just refuse to believe what's in front of their eyes.

And look at you LGS, “This President has screamed and shouted and threatened …” Find an example. Find one.

Pres Obama did not lie. There is no provision for illegals to receive free health care subsidies. However, it is the law that all persons must receive service when brought to the ER. The President does not scream, rant, cajole or threaten. And to those who claim they have read the bill, I say hogwash!! (all 1000 pages of legal jargon, yea right) There are excerpts that are conveniently picked out and left to interpretation, and then bellowed out by the hot breath of the opposition. To Joe the politician, its not just Democrats that have no affordable coverage, pre-existing conditions. have had their coverage dropped or lessened and their premiums skyrocket. Do you also worship at the knee, and kiss the other end, of the neon god$ at the compassionate in$urance companie$? WHERE WAS ALL THIS OUTRAGE WHEN IDIOT BUSH RAGED WAR ON A SOVEREIGN COUNTRY, COST 5000+ OF OUR KID'S LIVES AND PUSHED UP THE FEDERAL DEFICIT IN THE BILLIONS??? SHORT MEMORY

Pam, I have read all 1000+ pages – I care about this issue deeply and am intelligent enough to read “legal jargon”. There needs to be insurance/health reform just not this bill. I am assuming that since you think the thought of anyone reading all 1000 pages is “hogwash” then you must be among those who have not read it. So, we are to listen to your analysis of a bill you have not read? Sounds like Congress to me – are you a Senator?

I've dealt with plenty of hard-core Obama foes on this website, and if there's one thing that I've learned, is that facts are worthless to them. As long as they “know” in their hearts that Obama is bad for America, it doesn't matter that you can empirically demonstrate to them that claims against Obama are factually wrong. It's all about fuzzy patriotic “feeling” to them, not facts.

So I wish you well, jeezuzchrist, but the odds are against you.

ali2
Comment posted September 11, 2009 @ 8:23 pm

I love how you make several generalizations here JohnC. First that because someone disagrees with HR 3200, they are a hard-core Obama foe as opposed to an intelligent person who is using freedom of speech to debate an issue. Silly me, I thought that the right to state our beliefs and opinions was the foundation of this country. Secondly, all people who oppose HR 3200 or don't support Obama are irrational people to whom facts are worthless. When did disagreeing with a President make me unwilling to acknowledge fact? I seem to remember Hillary Clinton saying that disagreeing with an administration was patriotic. Did that only apply to Republican President's??

JohnC
Comment posted September 11, 2009 @ 8:34 pm

Well, let me test your argument then. Does the fact that you have been referred to the specific section of the House health care bill resolve your question about whether the health care bill excludes illegal aliens?

If not, why not? Facts, not generalizations about the bill. Facts.

Most entertaining speech we have seen in a very long time. After witnessing Obama over & over and then some more, finally his 50 minute speech of sameness turns into two defining words: “YOU LIE”. 10 of us almost fell to the floor laughing. Made me wish I could move to SC and vote for this guy!

ali2

Actually, JohnC, I cannot answer that because I need to do more research. The specific section certainly requires me to do that as it is contrary to what I believed before jeezu posted the section. I actually hope my research bears that out because it would be one less area to focus my energy on in opposition of this bill. However, I still have many other much more important concerns about HR 3200. If this country is going in the direction you think it should and you are getting the “change” Obama promised you, why are you so bitter towards those who disagree with you? Maybe you need to find a little of that fuzzy patriotic feeling and be glad that you live in a country where debate and disagreeing is still allowed.

Joe Wilson has apologized enough for his outburst, and I agree with what he said. President Obama is LYING. Joe Wilson just said what we are all thinking when Obama gets up to give another one of his speeches. Obama has lost all credibility with the American people!! Joe Wilson should NOT apologize again to those premadonas in Congress, such as Pelosi, Reed, Schummer, Dodd. They are all liars, time for all of us to speak out and let them all know we do NOT appreciate their lies!!

JohnC
Comment posted September 11, 2009 @ 9:06 pm

Do your research, and then get back to me.

Having said that, I can't see what else there is for you to research. The text of the section states quite clearly: “Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States.” That means the government can't subsidize illegal immigrants to purchase insurance (that is what the “subtitle” in question concerns). Any provision regarding such subsidies has to be interpreted from this requirement.

Does the entire bill say “no illegal aliens can participate” in the health care system? No. And no plan ever will, even from the GOP. There is no reason to prevent any person from spending his or her own money on the health care of his choice, whether public or private. And I have a hard time imagining that prohibiting this would be a reasonable goal of opponents of this health care plan.

If this country is going in the direction you think it should and you are getting the “change” Obama promised you, why are you so bitter towards those who disagree with you?

Perhaps if you've seen some of the endless, demonstrably false assertions repeatedly leveled on this page against President Obama – even after being comprehensively debunked on multiple occasions – you might understand my growing lack of patience.

It's the equivalent of people asserting that the sun rises in the west. When you explain that the sun rises in the east, they merely state once again that the sun rises in the west, and then call you an apologist for other liars who claim the sun rises in the east.

Maybe you need to find a little of that fuzzy patriotic feeling and be glad that you live in a country where debate and disagreeing is still allowed.

I love this country, but I am angry that it is being dumbed down. The First Amendment is a protection from government restrictions on speech, but it is not a right to peddle nonsense without the inconvenience of being called out.

Betcha none of the good senators read it, (including Joe) But, I can tell you who did read it. LAWYERS FOR THE INSURANCE EXEC. and they in turn recruited their minions to vilify and discredit this bill in any lawful or unlawful manner that was availed to them. Already some of the folks who have learned from them are writing about his marriage, his personality, etc. The issue at hand is the healthcare bill and he was answering the comment concerning illegal aliens and the fact that they will be treated and come under the government care. He certainly provided the impetus to the entire speech; think about it. If people remember nothing else, they will remember that he shouted “You LIE!” when the prez made that statement. Joe may very well be a nice guy, but he has always been vocal:

Several years ago, [now-Rep. Wilson] loudly denounced the claim of Essie Mae Washington-Williams as being a daughter of Strom Thurmond. Mr. Wilson called her story “unseemly” and a “smear.” Her name today is listed on the State House monument to her father, alongside those of his white children.

His views of truth are open to interpretation. That's a southern euphemism for might not recognize it.

The past is important as an indicator of how people and events will react in the future.I find it interesting that the Honorable Joe Wilson referred to an unseemly and loud truth as a smear, just as you do. But you say you are 'tired of being referred to as “wrong” about these kill bills and also having our country referred to as one of muslim leanings.' Your wording is difficult to understand, but I assume you are referring to Palin's fictitious Death Panels. Since our current system actually does include cost/benefit committees that regularly deny lifesaving treatment, I don't understand how adopting an improvement is objectionable. And…where did you hear we had 'Muslim leanings'?! I see that there are no death panels, and this is not, nor has it been suggested that this is a 'Muslim leaning' country. Are you not interested in the smears of the present?

To Irish_Wake: No, I am not interested in your views about the supposed intent of people's words in the past to be referenced for the future. Every situation is different and each of us has our own response at different times, different places…a young person responds in his/her way, then later responds to a similar situation in another way as maturity is reached. And yes, I repeat I am tired of being referred to as “wrong” on the kill bills and said nothing about Sarah Palin's views or statements when I said that; your take on my words is what you decided to “read into it” just as I can ASSUME (as you obviously do) that you habitually use your “take” on what everyone has to say. As for the muslim reference, obama made that himself on his travels overrseas. Do you not listen to what he says or do you just pay attention to b.s. smears?

I have heard pundits accuse liberals of using words without regard to definition, but I never had it illustrated so clearly. I go to great lengths not to read meaning into other peoples words: note how I took care to bring to your attention how your identification of 'kill boards' were the same as ex-VP nominee Palin's 'death panels'. I did not assume, I wanted you to clarify your meaning. You still have not said what you mean by kill bills, ensuring I would remain confused. Since I wanted clarification, and you refused, I must conclude that you do this on purpose. I know that President Obama has said the Wast and Islam have common beliefs (Muslims also revere both books of the Bible), and that if you count the number of Muslim Americans, we’d be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world. I am unaware that President Obama has actually said that this country had 'muslim leanings'.
I admit you are correct, I did assume your intent was to prove a point, not announce a position.
I apologize for my error.

Ok Irish_Wake, One more time: #1. I do not know what “kill boards” are — or maybe you misspelled that. #2. Many bills before Congress are referred to as “kill bills” and are discussed often, even online. Look them up. You, in my humble opinion, need to look for your own info in many places and do not believe someone else's words are true until you prove to yourself they are true. For instance, find out exactly what the Islamic religion is about and don't take obama's description to heart. If you like it, take it; your belief is personal but that religion is nothing like mine. I was going “easy” on obama to refer to his words as “muslim leanings” when he actually said: If you take all the American Muslims, you would have one of the largest muslim nations….etc. Not so…we have more or less 6 million muslims here. No more religion talk; this is about healthcare and I say Joe is right and Kill this Bill. Exit

Agreed, this has veered way off topic. If this bill does indeed specify that illegal immigrants are to be covered at my expense, it should be defeated. We should also reform the current system that ensures illegal immigrants receive treatment at local hospital ER's, those expenses are absorbed and handed on by the hospital.

Jason,

Yes, We in S.C. do have problems with education in our schools! Unfortunately, we are inundated by folks from Washington, Boston. New York and all points north (as examples) who use our schools (approximately 20-25%) as d dumping ground for the little innocent children born out of wedlock. They come at two different times of the year! Usually in August just before the start of the school year and later in the school year when the Baddies are kicked out of their schools and dumped in our schools after they have been expelled for crimes as just plain criminals! The first group are the one that are born to unmarried or from disfunctional couples who have have reclessly had these children with no concern for their welfare. All are the one dumped on Auntie, Uncles, Granparenrs and others who are caring enough to take care of them. I know what I am talking about as I worked as a Baliff in the Family court system for years. I have seen the infuence and blantant disrespect for the Law that these Young Hoodlums and their Gangs have on our School system. Please go preach your venom to those responsible for thes misgivings to these children! Parden my spelling. sometimes the brain and the fingers get tangled up !

I think you are onto something, Irish_Wake and I totally agree with you. When you get a chance, I suggest you write the poem “IF” by Rudyard Kipling into your browser and go to its website, read and absorb those words. No matter what political party you join, always have your own thoughts and be ready to say no to those things with which you do not agree. Note: Just to let you know, I grew up in a socialistic town, was brainwashed so to speak and fought very hard to overcome this and gain the esteem of my own mind. Thank you for your thoughts and I have learned from you as you have from me. I consider you my fellow American and wish you well.

Henry Stevens, You are right; good for you for standing up for SC. I have lived and worked there and know what you say is true. Children who live in the “Coastal Empire” have to be sent to private schools, academies, etc. to get away from the ill-bred “otherlings” that go into the public schools. This also happens in other states, mostly southern.

Where can I go to see evidence that the proposed bill specifies coverage of illegal immigrants?

The bill is here
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d111:H….

but I can't find the passage that the Honorable Joe Wilson read before he added his critique of the proposal.

One copy of the original bill HR3200 was at http://www.opencongress.org…From what I read now, the Reps are still discussing the changes for illegal aliens due to Wilson's comment.

Quick fact about the Honorable Joe Wilson's claim:

“HR 3200, SEC. 246. No federal payment for undocumented aliens. Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States.” Don't take my word for it, go the site Joe Wilson's staff uses – the Library of Congress. http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d111:H….

The evidence shows the Honorable Gentleman from the Great State of South Carolina is either unfazed by or ignorant of the facts. South Carolina voters approval of their Representative will increase if they learn this information.

Ok Irish, you are getting behind in this Great Written Document since Obama is now planning to LEGALIZE the immigrants by giving them amnesty and they will then be eligible for the healthcare. Don't be hung up on Joe Wilson; he just opened the can of worms, rather like the two young people who opened the can of ACORNS. Keep researching; you are doing fine. Remember Winston Churchill who said: “If you are young and not a liberal, you have no compassion. If you are old and are not a conservative, you have no brain.”

<Confusion> I thought we agreed to stay on topic. The original post was for people supporting Wilson for shouting a deliberate falsehood. I demonstrated that Wilson is lying, but he is only a sideshow. My point is that a large segment of his constituency is proud of supporting any opinion that comes out of a Republican mouth, regardless of meaning. I believe my research shows that being old and conservative does not mean one has a brain. Indeed, it shows the opposite.

Granted, there is talk of amnesty. There is always talk of amnesty. There has been amnesty declared and signed by a fairly conservative President. That is a separate topic.

“Yeah, Right”.! At least Wilson is, or has the Gonads to tell things like they are. It's kinda hard for the Whacked our 60's Woodstock Generation to accept the truth even if it slapped their faces with it. This Monkey See, Monkey Do Generation are the ones leading our country down the path to distruction. I happen to be 72 and feel fortunate to have lived in the time when a person's word was their bond. Heaven help us on our path to destruction that the Oboma crowd is leading us down. I only regrete that My Grand Children will meet the brunt force of this Great nation that so many have died for in protecxting the freedoms that you liberals are hell bent on destroying. Oh, By the way, there was no racial inference oin the above statement about Monkeys.

I AGREE, Henry; I also lived thru that generation and it was as disgusting and cowardly as it is now with all these losers strung out on their drugs. Drugheads making decisions for the rest of us like they even RETAIN any info they were taught. Ayres is a good example and Bo's big pal..look at his friends and you will see him. He is all that Joe says and much more.

KKahn,

I spent 13 years active in the Air Force from 1955 to 1968 until I got fed up with the whacked out Nuts who were at the Base gate of my last station on many occasions of my last peremanent base. I will not go into what I did as it was very sensative and What I did. However it did concern the Titan II , the lasrgest missle in the SAC inventory at the time. I was almost blown up in an accident on two separte occasions. I did finish my time out in the Air Force reserves for a total of 35 years, The Long hairs and Peace Freaks were discusting in their insults. These are the same slobs who are runing or should I say ruining it with theie “ME first, To Hell with you Attitude. These are the same friends of the now dead and gone Phantom of Chapaquidic (sp) who are in office now. God Help Us!!!!

Yes Henry, I agree with you wholeheartedly; I would like to thank you for your service to our country despite the incredible derision and thanklessness that your particular generation has suffered. All of the males in my family served faithfully in various sections of the armed forces from the beginning of our country up until the present. Our young people of today are more ignorant than the ones even during the Viet Nam era. You & I and our counterparts will be gone but they will suffer for their own ignorance in coming years. Only God will stop the insanity.

Jason, Oh, isn't Kenya in a suburb of Washington D.C. ????? Being an ignoramus from South Carolina I uess I will just have to live with my ignorance for the next few years. I have managed to do this for about 72 years and I have learned to live with it!!!! I learned a long time ago to be careful of what you ask for as it might come back to haunt you! Isn't it amaizing how many of the Smart people from up North are moving South especially to the Beach areas. Do they really like it or they trying to change us mentally Retards?
