All that precedes may indeed be true. The thesis is arguably a sound one. That includes the contention that even if the McCain/Palin ticket does not prevail in November, Gov. Palin will still emerge a winner and arguably the logical heir to leadership of the Republican Party.

None of which, however, negates the fact that she is not now, nor will she be by November or January, by any stretch of the imagination qualified for the office she seeks. Sen. McCain's selection of Sarah Palin is an ill-conceived and cynical manipulation of the electorate, especially women, and fundmentally irresponsible. Her charisma is undeniable. Her preparedness to be VicePresident of the United States neglible.

All of which begs the real question: Why do we insist on lowering the qualificatons bar to accomodate Gov. Palin? Why are we so gullible? Why are we so desperate?

I'm sorry, but I don't think being the mayor of a town the size of the high school I graduated from and a governor for 20 months of one of the tiniest states (one with no tax issues, etc.) counts for much in terms of executive experience. She even had to hire a city administrator to run Wasilla when she was mayor and she chose to get federal pork to build a sports complex instead of a waste water treatment plant, a sewer system for the town, and decent roads (you know, infrastructure that benefits the whole community for decades to come). Now, I am a hockey mom and I do appreciate that sports complex when I'm dragged to Wasilla against my will. And, I wouldn't mind having one here in Fairbanks but, frankly, those infrastructure needs should have taken precedence.

Obama has a ton of knowledge through his excellent education, 8 years as a state legislator (of a relatively large state with big issues), and now as a U.S. Senator. He has chosen as his successor, should he need one, a person with more foreign policy experience than almost anyone in the United States. Not some lipstick covered pit bull.

The Republicans are once again stooping to Rovian tactics to win by getting ignorant, single-issue Americans to vote for the 2 Republican dimwits. Its a shame - there are some awesome Republicans out there that could have done a darn good job for this country instead of continuing to drive us into the ground by continuing the ruinous Bush policies.

To add to Elbert's comment, Margaret Thatcher studied Chemistry and Law as well and stood for the Conservatives when she was in her mid20s.

>>Though Luce received little formal education, and was helped by her marriage to the most successful magazine publisher in the history of the genre, she possessed an intellectual heft that even her critics had to acknowledge. In this, she is similar to the more traditional, well-heeled conservatives — like former U.N. Amb. Jeane Kirkpatrick, Britain’s former Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, even current Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.<< Good grief. Rice has a Ph.D., and was Provost at Stanford.

The Sara Palin we saw at the Convention may or may not be the Sara Palin who will emerge during the campaign. She has a very brief time to prove herself, and will have ample opportunities to stumble and fall. She didn't know what Charles Gibson was talking about when he referred to the "Bush Doctrine" and if that's just the first in a series of gaffes, the lady ain't going anywhere. But if she's got the ability to get with the program, to master the facts and names and figures of the international and national political scene, she may yet prove the author right. Right now, and speaking from the Left, I'm not convinced she's got the stuff of greatness. And, though pretty, she couldn't hold a candle to Clare Boothe Luce. ;-)
