Mainland Europeans have “work councils,” which are essentially unions that lobby for ever shorter hours and ever more salary…and the Europeans wonder why they're losing even more jobs to India and China than the US is.

Don't get me wrong, I love to visit Europe. The French people in particular were wonderful to my wife and I when we visited in 2004. But, you shouldn't act like everything is perfect over there. They may learn more languages in school than Americans, but they would do well to stop making fun of Americans for working long hours, because their highfalutin education won't so a damn thing if they're not competitive.

I don’t know too many people who wouldn’t want to live so close to work that they could ride a bike there. That is not reality. And for a lot of people, IF that was the only option, it would be a minimum-wage paying job.

I work with two guys who are legally blind. Neither of them could get to work if they didn’t have public transportation. And they could not live closer to work because they cannot afford to live in the city.

There is not a sane parent out there who wants their kid to starve, but life isn’t that simple, and suggesting otherwise shows naivety.

You are suggesting that, no matter how well one’s job pays, they should never live a lifestyle beyond what minimum wage can pay, IN CASE they lose their real job, and the only job they can find is a minimum wage paying job.
