The ‘Birther’ Primary

Public Policy Polling breaks down its latest surveys on the “birther” conspiracies and the 2012 GOP presidential field and finds that former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is the most popular candidate among “birthers,” while former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee is the most popular among Republicans who know that the president was born in America. Among “birthers,” Palin’s favorability is 66 percent; among non-”birthers” Mike Huckabee’s favorability is 60 percent.

Tom Jensen links to a Denver Post column that makes the obvious point in a rather on-the-one-hand-on-the-other way:

I don’t believe those poll numbers. I do believe it’s what people said. I just don’t believe it’s what they think. The answers, I’m guessing, are shorthand for the anger out there — not unlike when all those polled Democrats said George W. Bush was involved in 9/11 because, well, uh, I don’t know.

If this is correct, PPP’s poll confirms that Palin’s popularity among Republicans is a function of anger toward the media and toward President Obama. Huckabee is generally liked; Palin is liked for what she opposes. And not that much of the base really likes Mitt  Romney.

Which only furthers the idea that Romney's the guy. Hell, most of the base didn't care for John McCain.

Inasmuch as anyones'; faith should not be held against them, I doubt your superb logic will be the rule of the day, even though you use logic and reason, you're giving too much to the other crowd even though your principles are sound. Even if Romney gets 80% of the way, he might have a hard time with the hard turnouts on the big day.

But in a way I hope you're right, because I don't care what his faith is or isn't. If the opposite hardline grows, I think in the choices given, Huck will be the default as the contest squeezes. Absent religion and prejudice, Mitt is probably a better choice, so absent a liberal, if a Mormon has a shot? I think that's great. (not that I give a flip, he's just more rational than the others.)

But he doesn't have a chance. He's in the wrong party if he wants that particular type of blindness. Again,… I hope I'm wrong, and that you are right. I'm not a fan of Mitt's work (I live in Stoughton, Massachusetts), but at least it has a non-crusader, non-nostalgia practicality to it.

But even better is if Republicans lose again altogether or get someone even better, not that any of them would beat Obama, shhhhh. But we do all want Obama to be more fearless? I spend half my political day wondering if Obama is too timid and the other wondering if he's too fearless in things I dont care about.

Here we go again. Why do some Republicans don't learn? Simple fact: Huckabee lost to McCain during the 2008 presidential election because although people (republicans, independents, and even some democrats) like him, his opponents (Romney with his presidential looking face and CEO experience, and McCain with his American Hero label) successfully painted him as unelectable. Besides that, Republican strategists were preparing for a Hillary Clinton challenge so McCain won the nomination due to the fact that he was the only one believed to have better credentials especially when it comes to foreign policy and strong leadership. Then, Obama came. Whether we like it or not he won because he was young, he speaks good, and he was black. The result: Obama got unanimous votes from young people, African Americans, and those that he fooled by his rhetorics.

Bottom line: Some people especially in the conservative movement repented their decision. That decision was the ignorance of Huckabee. First, his contact with Main Street America allowed him to get the feeling that the economy was in shambles. He boldly presented it during the debates. Romney the Expert Multi-millionnaire Businessman and the rest of the candidates laughed at him then. Huckabee turned out correct, a true visionary indeed. Second, he was the only Republican candidate who criticized the Bush administrations “arrogant and bunker mentality” on foreign policy. He was laughed at again because of his courage in presenting this sad truth. On election day, the voters punished the party of Bush. McCain the Hero lost to a black man who has no executive experience and whose nationality is still in big question at the time. Republican party right now doesn't have clear plans for America. Huckabee has… Preventive health care, Fair Tax, Reform on Education, Strong Defense, Smaller government, Respect to the Constitution (2nd Amendment), etc.

Now, people are seeing a genuine and healthy alternative to Obama and that's our man Huckabee.

Lastly, about bipartisanship… Huckabee endured 2 terms as governor of an overwhelmingly democratic state legislator. His experience on this is unquestionable. This is a clear contrast to Obama's Chicago-style politics.

Americans are waking up, Huckabee for President!!!

The best part of the free-for-all on the Republican side is that Republicans are not all-for-one and one-for-all. They're just winner-take-all in the primaries.

Huckabee supporters think Palin supporters are dimwitted bigots.

Romney supporters think Huckabee is an unelectable squirrel-eater.

Palin supporters think the Anti-Christ took his wife on a date in New York City.

None of these groups is composed of team players. More like people who take their ball and go home when they don't get to take all the shots.

So Huckabee will have to distort himself and his voice to be heard over the throaty, lusty cheering of the plaid-flannel-wearing Palin faithful.

Palin will have to say SOMETHING and thus turn off 75% of the country and confuse the other 25%, who would still vote for her even if she gave birth to McCain's baby while shooting at gay people from a helicopter.

Romney will have to pretend that he has character, which will just piss off the Huckabee and Palin people, who regard him as a chameleon RINO with good hair.

And Obama can continue to be President until 2016 without having to do all that much in the way of dedicated campaigning. He just has to be the grown-up compared to the other politicians, who act like grabby children.

I've got my popcorn ready. Should be quite a show.

Friend, please use your brain properly. Reality check: Obama's approval ratings in Ohio, Florida, Virginia, New Jersey, North Carolina, Michigan, Colorado, Indiana have become negative or nearly negative after 6months of acting as president. Those states allowed him a big victory once but his LIES caused his approval ratings to take a free fall and it's difficult even quite impossible for him to regain the trust of those states. The economy might improve in the short term, but concerns for debt, deficit, and the dollar will soon become issues that would sink the Democratic party's Titanic. The people would punish him for betraying America.

As for the future Republican candidates, the obvious second choice of Palin supporters is Mike Huckabee. The same is true for the supporters of Gingrich which would eventually choose Mike Huckabee once they realized that their man doesn't stand a chance against Obama. Looking at supporters of Romney who claims a fiscal conservative, they would have to choose between Huckabee and Obama supposing he maintains the lead until the Republican nomination. They would choose Huckabee by then.

Potential supporters of Huckabee in a hypothetical match-up with Obama: The usual social conservatives, evangelical Christians, fiscal conservatives, old voters, he will take a slice of the young voters, a slice of the black Christian Americans (who abandoned the GOP last election because McCain's faith was questionable to them).

Besides, if intelligent Americans would have to choose between a “squirrel-eater” and a “multi-trillion dollar devourer” the winner is obvious. Huckabee would be your choice if your are intelligent. I hope you are.

Fighting for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Huckabee for President!!!

It;s nice to see you've got that huge Republican victory in 2012 all planned out on a state-by-state basis. It's too bad you are so wrong, though.

The bertraying America talk gets old and rational people don't buy it. If they did, we'd all be celebrating the election of President McCain. Hey, if that's what they want to run on, though, that's fine. They'll rack up huge margins in their Southern, lily-white base that way. Good for them.

With minorities making up about 38% of the electorate in 2012, and said minorities voting about 85% for Obama, that means Republicans will have to win the white vote about 66%-33%. Good luck. Demographics are a bitch!

Polls that are taken now have no real bearing on what happens years from now.Somehow you think died in the wool Democrats are going to vote for died in the wool Republicans?!? Please!!

I can't speak for ther states ,but NJ is dealing with an unpopular Dem Gov right now. That will be over when 2012 comes around. The other point is,Jersyans tend to be loud, brash, and talkative. We will tellyou off, tell you where its it,tell you where you can stick it.But when push comes to shove,we stand up for our true beliefs and spend money, get out the vote, and vote Democrat.

The idea that Palin or Huckabee could win NJ is just insane!! Mitt Romney might seem more palatable, but we have seen too many uber-politicians to fall for him.

Sorry, folks, but NJ will vote for Obama in huge crowds come 2012.

“Huckabee would be your choice if your are intelligent. I hope you are.”

“If your are intelligent,” you wouldn't be writing fantasies about Huckabee beating Obama.

I like Huckabee. Seems like a fun guy to have at a party or to take a community college course from. But he found his niche in a talk show. He's not going to get Democrats to switch parties. He's not going to sway Independents away from Obama.

Let's be clear. He could take votes away from a wacky Republican, like, say, Palin.

But the power brokers on the Republican side don't respect Huckabee. And the base likes Palin. They haven't got any interest in a guy who tries to be nice and friendly. They want an us-against-them, real-America versus liberal-fake-America false binary.

Huckabee does nothing to appeal to the base. Without that, you cannot win a Republican primary election. The base is over-represented in the early Republican primaries.

Don't get me wrong. I'd love to see Obama go up against Huckabee. Not only would Obama win in a breeze, but Huckabee is above making all the nonsensical “Muslim terrorist” wacko accusations that Palin would delight in making.

I appreciate your attempt to set me straight. If Huckabee, through some divine intervention, wins the Republican nomination, I will happily cheer for him…as he gets crushed by Obama's re-election juggernaut.

Next year the economy will be better and we will have a health care bill. One person will get the bulk of the credit. The black guy in the White House. Republicans, and each of them, will be painted by Democrats as the Party of No, who stood by and did nothing but bitch and moan while Democrats cleaned up Republican garbage.

Good luck spinning that with Democrats and Independents, who you will need in HUGE numbers if you are to beat Obama. Republican party identification is at a generational low.

Others on this mini-thread have argued the function of shifting demographics to you. I won't follow in their footsteps.

Best of luck.

-Stephen

It was certainly a phrase which put the wind up Obama & such phrases do
not just happen. It is also quite evidently true that if funding is not
limited by insurance & medical need is infinite, then somebody, or preferably
some group of people, are going to have to take nasty decisions.

To be fair to Sarah Palin, most of the posts on policy issues on her Facebook page were not written by her. But her staff is notoriously almost as dumb and incompetent as she is (see: Meg Stapleton), so that doesn't mean too much.

And no, there is as little substance to the “death panel” claim as there is to the purported author of the claim and the above pathetic defender of that pathetic fool. At least produce evidence as strong as that crudely forged “Kenyan birth certificate” you people seemed to like.

Brendan I have already explained why somebody is going to have to take the tough decisions. Is it your contention that Obama is going to produce an infinite amount of money to pay for an infinite amount of health care so that decisions to stop NEVER have to be taken? If so perhaps you could enlighten us by saying where he will get this infinite cashbook.

September 11th is Patriot Day & the 17th is Constitution Day. On at least those two days let us pray for the salvation of the man some people refer to as “President” and/or “Barack Obama”. I pray he will get right with God, come clean with the American people about his past and resign from office. If he resigns immediately before any indictment VP Biden will become president & BHO can be pardoned for his deceit.

Didn't know private insurers never make decisions to stop care while providing “infinite” care either. Oh wait.. they do! Obama's reforms include no more discrimination based on pre-existing conditions and life and yearly limits of coverage. Outrageous!

Calling it death panels is stupid and dishonest beyond belief. The government has no profit motive, as private insurers do. You stand a higher chance of being bounced now than under the proposed reforms (= better than now). If Queen Sarah is against improvement, and implies the government actively takes steps to kill you, which is insane, then she deserves all the ridicule she's getting and more.
