Robert Novak, 1931-2009
Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at 11:45 am
Kenneth Tomlinson at Human Events, which ran the Evans-Novak Report until it was ended last year, confirms that the conservative reporter Robert Novak has died after a year-long battle with cancer. Tim Carney, Novak’s last collaborator on the report, has a remembrance up.
Novak would often tell aspiring journalists to pick a different field if their goal was to change the world. But, by simply aiming to inform and to do his job as well he could, Novak changed the lives of his readers and those of us blessed to work with him.
Update: Lynn Sweet confirms it:
“He was someone who loved being a journalist, love journalism and loved his country and loved his family,” Novak’s wife, Geraldine, told the Sun-Times on Tuesday.

I am sorry for Mr. Novak's family. But he was a scumbag and hurt many more people than he ever helped. And he endangered our national security by outing Valerie Plame as she was working on keeping nukes out of the hands of the Iranians.

I did not know him personally, so I could not comment on that part of his life. However, I can say that the world is better off without his professional activities.
If his goal was to inform readers, then he missed the point. He would have served his readers and his country better if, instead of outing CIA operatives, he had helped demonstrate that the case against Iraq was cooked-up nonsense.
He will go down in history as being on the wrong side of it.

Sad, but true! Even going back to his days as a cohost on Cross-Fire, he was one of the early pioneers in changing the tone of politics to the negative. He will not be missed, by many!

Bob Novak was an opinion journalist. He leaned to the right in his takes on what he saw and what he heard, but he presented the facts as they were known to him. His was quality work and he was a hard working professional reporter like they simply don't make any more. The world of American journalism is a much worse off place without the Prince of Darkness. Bob Novak, you will be missed.

I did know him when I worked at CNN and he was pretty much a jerk. Rude to the staff, horrible to the interns, rude to the guests, pompous and mean. Sorry, but that was my experience seeing him day in and out in a setting where he was comfortable to be his true self…. that he hit a pedestrian and fled, and used “journalism” to put a US officer's life in danger – not surprised…

I thought this was a liberal site, whose proponents claim to be tolerant and compassionate to all. All I see here are the heartless, mean-spirited and bitter. Bob Novak gave his opinions, and was disagreed with by many. But he had a consistent philosophy and standard from which those opinions were generated. What's wrong with that? To wish someone ill because you disagree with them, is inconsistent with the the pretense of liberals that only conservatives harbor such hate.

It's truly pathetic that you would make a comment like this. Hopefully, when your day comes, people won't say the same things about you.
Comment posted August 18, 2009 @ 8:37 pm
The words compassionate and tolerant should never be used to describe a liberal. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Ronald Reagan, Charles Heston, Tony Snow, William Buckley, Jessie Helms, Jerry Falwell, William Rehnquist, and now Robert Novak. I once told progressives that real change in this country will only come when the white male conservative relics of the 1950s and 1960s finally pass from this earth. That as long as those white male conservatives held a stranglehold on the public discourse with their fearmongering and racism, no real forward movement could be achieved as their power was simply too well entrenched. As Bill Oreilly and John McCain openly admitted during the 2008 campaign, conservatives must do all they can to protect the “white christian male power structure.” A rare moment of truth from Oreilly. Not surprisingly, the media ignored the statement (even after spending weeks analyzing “bitter-gate”). So now Novak falls and so goes another member of the “white christian male power structure.” Its only a matter of time for the rest really. How much longer for a dinosaur like Pat Buchanan or a grossly obese fatbody like Rush Limbaugh? The new mobs of tea baggers and birthers are not nearlly as articulate as these fallen liars which means the hatred of these white male conservatives will die with them. All that is required is patience.

After reading your comment, who do you think is more likely to burn in hell? You? Or Mr. Novak? I would have to say that it will probably be you. I will pray for you though.

Fearmongering? Isn't that what Obama has been doing since he took office. It's been crisis this and crisis that. He has used the state of the economy to ram his agenda down our throats

Noone rammed anything down your throat. Stop being such a damn crybaby. Elections have consequences as you know. I wasn't in favor of borrowing 1.7tril for tax cut giveaways to the rich in the promise that a job boom would follow (which failed by the way as Bush left office having only created 2.5mil jobs as compared to Clinton's 23 mil), but I had to live with it and I'm just as responsible as you nitwits for that 1.7tril in debt. I wasn't in favor of borrowing nearly 3tril to turn our military into the “Metropolitan Bagdad Police Force” so that we could “plant the seed of democracy in the middle east” (which also failed miserably), but I had to live with it and I'm responsible for that debt as well. Same goes for the Medicare Part D giveaway, the Patriot Act, etc, etc. When your side loses, you have to eat the policy prerogatives of the winning side. Always been that way and always will be. Nothing worse than seeing a bunch of angry white conservative crybabies who aren't angry about anything except losing two election cycles in a row. I swear I hope you guys win in 2010 at least so you can shut up already. Its not even fun now. Its like when I keep beating my little cousin in video game boxing…after the tears start to roll I just let him win…you guys aren't much different.

It's funny how you guys claim that all we conservatives do is cry. Yet, when Republicans held office, all the Dems did was cry and claim that we stole the election. People are protesting the ObamaCare bill and all I hear from the Dems in Washington is crying. They keep saying the same thing…Those damn conservatives organized this. It was Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. Both sides do there share of crying. Own it. Stop passing the buck.
Comment posted August 18, 2009 @ 10:31 pm
Actually …the last President did steal the election in 2000.
And if that word makes you feel bad then I'll tone it down and say that without both intentional and unintentional voting irregularities in Florida, some of which (like disenfranchising African-Americans) is basically ILLEGAL, George W. Bush would not have been President in 2000.
Comment posted August 18, 2009 @ 10:47 pm
That will be your little secret. After several recounts, one of which being illegal, George Bush still won the election. After excluding the military vote, George Bush still won the election. After recounting only democratic leaning counties, George Bush still won. There is absolutely no proof that George Bush stole the election. Let me guess, you're going to tell me that the President of Diebold who manufactures the voting machines is a Republican so he rigged the machines to vote for Bush. Where is your proof? You still can't get over the fact that he won.

The worlds smallest violin grieves the loss of a bigoted lying jerk who didn`t have the balls to tell the truth about the Plame affair. He will not be missed

Love him or hate him, Robert Novak was a unique and influential voice and had the inside track around Washington for longer than many of the current band of so-called journalists have been alive. The Washington reporting scene will be poorer without him. I will miss his presence. As to the “Valerie Plame affair”…much ado about nothing. It is common knowledge, at least in some circles, that she had been “outed” by the (former) Soviet agent Aldrich Ames years before Novak disclosed the information Richard Armitage had given him in July 2003. Her covert career had long since been over. In reality, it was a non-issue despite the press jumping all over it. One last thing…the vitriol displayed in some of the posts about the passing of this man (or ANY man for that matter) is in shockingly bad taste. Truly shameful and shallow.

After reading most of the negatives on Robert Novak, I can assume that liberals are not as caring for mankind as once thought. If all liberals are represented by the few here, then the conservative mantra of killing healthcare reform is validated. To have liberals in control of everyone's health, with the mindset of the ones here, then conservatives will be in jeopardy if they ever get sick. It could become a qualification to be liberal in order to get healthcare. That way liberals could rid the country of conservatism once and for all. As a conservative, this is a very real scenario if liberal bloggers on this website are taken seriously.

Comment posted August 19, 2009 @ 3:53 am
How's the weather in Glenn Beck Land? No one except you brought up denying healthcare based on political affiliation, because it has never happened and has never even been suggested. That's a complete non sequitur, so thanks for psycho-analyzing yourself in front of everyone.
By the way, go ahead and re-post the reams of sympathetic comments from “conservatives” when it was announced that Ted Kennedy has brain cancer. You know, the ones that never, ever mention Mary Jo Kopechne. Then you can claim the moral high ground.

Where do you get your facts from? FOX?
“So Al Gore was the choice of Florida’s voters — whether one counts hanging chads or dimpled chads. That was the core finding of the eight news organizations that conducted a review of disputed Florida ballots. By any chad measure, Gore won.”
http://www.consortiumnews.com/2001/111201a.html
That was the final conclusion of 8 different news organizations, but the story was buried on on page 30 something even in the NY Times. Because as they later said, it was November 2001 and post 9/11 they didn't want to cast doubts on the legitimacy of Bush's presidency.

Glenn Beck is the lesser of my non-favorites and so are any Kennedy-bashers after the report of his illness. There is a time to restrain from degradation of political foes, and terminal illness or death fit into that frame. Whether liberal or conservative, character and humanity rises above ideology and the sample of liberalism is not well represented in this forum.
