While there is division among students about whether this is an issue of academic freedom or about whether it's justifiable for Boalt to employ a war criminal, there is one serious error in the article: his classes are NOT "among the most popular" and they never have been. Federalists flock to him, but they represent perhaps a dozen students at Boalt and most are inactive. Other than that, he teaches a mediocre constitutional law course (his "student remarks" and reviews are always mid-range if that) which is mostly attended because it's a bar subject and the other, far more popular professors (Haney-Lopez and Goodwin Liu) are either already full or not offering Con law that semester. No one is "excited" to get him for Con law except that at Thanksgiving dinner they can tell their family members, "yeah, I'm taking a class with the torture memo guy."<br>

God bless John Yoo! Republicans know that tough measures, what some would call torture, if you must, are needed against bad people to keep good people safe. Only the kind of people that would elect a Kenyan to be President of the United States would be against keeping America safe.

Why are we even having this debate? Of course torture is wrong, disgusting, reprehensible. It's totally contrary to Christian teaching and most other ethical traditions in the world. Whether or not Yoo broke any laws or Bar Association ethical rules, he should be shunned (and should not be teaching law (what a bad joke !!) at taxpayer expense at UC Berkeley)-

Among your commentors, Martin in NJ, PatG in SD, and Robert are right. Yoo has at the very least encouraged and condoned criminal conduct. He should certainly be disbarred from parcticing law. Then the criminal law can take its course, as it should.

Of course Yoo should be disbarred. Advocating torture, and falsely claiming that it is lawful in the United States, is a gross ethical violation and totally incompatible with his continuing as a member of any Bar Association, or continuing to practice law. And by the way, torturing helpless captives is the grossest kind of cowardice; utterly unworthy of our great county; bringing our country into disrepute; and therefore highly unpatriotic.

We are truly a country in trouble, when obvious war criminals are coddled and endowed with positions of authority, and their pet war profiteers continue to rake in the profits off the deaths of our children.<br>All you need to see is the likes of Yoo, Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld,... still parading around FREE! after having sunk an entire nation into the hell of endless wars, death, and destruction using now PROVEN lies and deceptions!<br>Our Founders are definitely rolling in their graves.<br>I renounce my alma mater UCB.<br>I will never again donate a penny to them.
