Obama has an opening to win the character debate precisely because of his oft-criticised calm steadiness and reliable restraint all through the campain. In contrast to Obama's remarkable Reagansqueness of mood, McCain is much less stable. McCain has up-ended his main message at least twice, has gone through several campaign staffs (though the are always lobbyists), and contradicted himself from everything from taxes to the war, to abortion, to Obama. McCain is a reckless, unreliable, hotheaded hotshot who has already taken wild gambles (Palin unvetted) with this countrys future dependeing on how he "feels" in any particular moment. Americans want a steady leader who they can rely on to be unflappable in the face of the intoxication of power and temptation to take needless risk . Like it or not "No Drama" Obamas calm workmanlike relaxed steadiness of character in the face of crisis (going all the way back to last fall and beyond) shows the kind of reliable leadership Americans want and need. Ironically, since he is all over the map, it is actually with McCain that Americans truly do not know what they might get - other than his continued instability of character. Obama has proven that he is both ready and steady by the kind of calm relaible restrained leadership he has shown in his campaigns' smooth and well organized drive to the White House .

Thanks, DiConcini! McCain is a colossal flip-flopper who hides behind his POW status and who now has a running-mate who is going to hide behind her "hockey-mom" and female status whenever she is challenged on real issues. Alas, if only I had a victim card to play every time someone dared to challenge me... wouldn't life be sweet... But this Virginia mom isn't drinking the GOP koolaid this time around.

That "maverick" label is so convenient isn't it? It basically allows McCain to do whatever he deems politically expendient and, instead of being called a corrupt politician, he is called a "maverick."

It's as if Dennis DeConcini has been virtually enrolled in the FBI Witness Protection Program ever since he retired from his Senate seat. It was nice to hear him on the radio yesterday and I really, really hope he gets out there more and tells the nation what he knows about McSame.

And while the Democrats are at it, might it be possible for them to change the word 'Maverick' from a good quality to a bad one? The last thing this country needs is cowboy President. Maverick = reckless = loose cannon.

I am in total agreement. The Democrats need to make this lack of judgment a central theme of why he not Obama is unqualified to be President. He supported this unabashed foreign policy disaster called the Iraqi war from beginning until now...he picked someone totally unqualified to be a heartbeat away knowing that he has the likelihood of not finishing his term, he voted with Bush 90 percent of the time, he supports continuing the Bush tax cuts...Democrats need to make it clear that McCain is unfit, and without judgment necessary to be President.
