Whither the National Council for a New America?

On Friday, I asked a Republican Hill staffer what had been happening with Rep. Eric Cantor’s (R-Va.) high-profile effort to re-brand* the Republican Party since its first event in May.

“Nothing,” laughed the staffer.

Today, Patrick O’Connor reports out the seeming disappearance of the National Council for a New America, and its founders see the downside of a big PR rollout. If there’s no follow-up, it blows up in your face.

[T]he biggest hurdle has been figuring out how to maneuver without violating congressional ethics rules that specifically forbid lawmakers from using their offices for explicitly political purposes … “Eric Cantor is a smart guy with a bright future,” said one Republican aide. “If he’d taken a little more time to figure it out and a little less thinking of the next day headlines, this thing could’ve been a real success.”

Oh no, looks like the fringe right-wing nutters are not getting on board with this re-branding effort.

Republicans can't afford to lose the right-wing fringe, comprised of the loony of the looniest of right wingnuts… that's most of their base!
