[Update] Libertarian GOP Candidate Raises More Than $500,000 With Ron Paul-Endorsed ‘Moneybomb’
Friday, August 07, 2009 at 3:36 pm
[UPDATE: I misunderstood the parameters of this fundraiser, and over-stated how much was raised. It's been corrected.]
Peter Schiff, the libertarian economist and investor who’s launched a dark-horse bid for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), is raking in cash from a Ron Paul-endorsed, 2007-style “moneybomb.” As of 3:30, Schiff supporters had raised more than $100,000 today for the candidate at Schiffathon.com, giving him more than $550,000 in campaign cash since entering the race in mid-July with the aim of raking in $750,000 by day’s end. By comparison, former Rep. Rob Simmons (R-Conn.), the front-runner for the GOP nomination, raised $753,000 from April through June.
Earlier today Ron Paul emailed his Campaign for Liberty list with a special request to make a donation. The full email:
Dear Supporter,
Our good friend in Liberty, Peter Schiff, is planning a run for Senate in Connecticut against Chris Dodd. The grassroots across the country are organizing a money bomb for him today to raise money and send a powerful message to the political elites that freedom is popular and that Liberty can.
Our contry needs Peter Schiff in Washington, and you can help today. Please go to www.Schiffathon.com right now and make a contribution. Together, we can help make history.
In Liberty,
Ron Paul
This is an awfully good sign for Rand Paul, the Texas congressman’s son, who is running for Senate in Kentucky.

I'd like to hear what Ron Paul thinks of people's behavior at town halls.

He'd probably oppose the violence by the union thugs, SEIU, and Acorn.

Maybe Rand Paul shouldn't have started in KY Senate run in New York City then.

Goodbye Dodd….We will be glad to see you go. Hopefully, it can be proven that you are in it for yourself and not the people. Ahhhh…breaking news. You were just cleared by a congress as having done no wrong in the mortgage scandal….go figure that. Keep playing us for fools……

Great! Lets get Ron Paul some help exposing these crooks at the federal reserve.. and lets send Dodd back to his million dollar home in the hills.

Voters memories are too short for this to ever, ever be an matter. Voters don't care about races until two months before elections. By that time no one will remember. And in the mean time Rand gets national media coverage. Seems like a good political move to me.

Why “dark-horse,” Dave?
Hate to say it but sometimes I think you're a Cato/Reason gatekeeper.

Awesome! I would encourage everyone to donate, even if its 5 bucks! If he does not raise enough cash/support he will FULLY REFUND EVERY SINGLE DONATION! I don't care if hes not running in my state, every constitutionally minded candidate needs our grassroots support!

If it were them causing the problems, but nice use of the talking points…

El Dorko,
He is dark-horse because he didn't even register on a poll for the Republican Primary in Connecticut. And I support hs bid mind you.
CATO and Reason are good sources anyway. I can support a cause and still see reality that Schiff has a long way to go to victory. He needs to join the race soon.

I guarantee that his GOP primary opponents will bring it up over and over again. Especially in a southern state.

Watch and educate yourself. This is the Acorn/SEIU assault.

Peter Schiff will be an excellent candidate. I wish him all the best, and sincerely hope that he wins the GOP primary.
But it should be made abundantly clear that we libertarians are more Anti-Chris Dodd (and Anti-Democrat Party on the whole), than commited to any one particular candidate.
Thusly, if Rob Simmons a moderate-to-conservative Republican, prevails over Peter Schiff, we will gladly, and most enthusiastically endorse and work for his election.

Wishy washy we support but we also support and we are mostly anti-things.
Can you stand up and endorse Schiff or do you want to continue to be part of the (controlled?) pretend opposition?

$755,974 Woohoo!!! The R3VOLUTION is alive and well baby! ya!

I will gladly work on the Schiff campaign as a volunteer.
But as a Libertarian, let me be clear: I will never, ever support the neo-con dirtbag Rob Simmons – and neither would most people I know who consider themselves a Libertarian here in Connecticut.

It's “mainstream” or “frontrunners” like Rob Simmons who have laid the foundations for Obama's liberal agenda. Because of the economic incompetence and blind ambition of these Republican hacks is the reason we are cursed with Obama and his ilk. Our country will not be helped by electing people like Rob to office. It will only slide further into the quagmire of economic collapse.

My group and I down in Southern CT are all fired up to expose Schiff for the reckless maniac he is! Schiff has all of these carpet-bagger Ron Paul wannabes from out of state funding his campaign. Well, we decide who our Senator is and we'll beat Schiff down. We don't need or want the freeper lunatic crowd here.
