Michigan GOP Congressman Supports Health Care Tax Credit … for Pets

Nice catch by Todd Heywood of The Michigan Messenger:

U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter [R-Mich.], has introduced legislation to create a tax deduction for pet owners’ expenses related to their pets.

According to the pet industry trade magazine, Pet Product News, McCotter, a Livonia Republican, introduced the legislation July 31 in conjunction with a Pet Product News survey on the industry.

The legislation is being supported by the lobbying arm of the pet industry, the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC).

According to the PPN story, the proposed legislation will amend the IRS code to allow pet owners to deduct up to $3,500 in pet related expenses, including veterinary care. [Emphasis added.]

As Heywood notes, McCotter is a vocal opponent of health care reforms for people currently being negotiated in Congress.

This is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. Does this guy have no conscience? He does not want to insure more PEOPLE, but he wants to provide tax breaks for pet insurance?????

I am in favor of a tax deduction for pet expenses. It needn't be as high as $3500, although
veterinary costs run up very quickly.

Animal care is not in competition with health insurance. Health care legislation is failing, because it is poorly constructed, and should be revamped.

He's my Congressman – what a loser. We write, call his office, and attend his town halls. He doesn't care about anyone but Thad. Typical arrogant politician, bought and paid for by the insurance lobby.

great idea this will possibly encourage more people to adopt animals. I currently have 4 animals and i know the vet bills are a big downfall to owning a pet. I basically recued all my animals and i could use a extra tax credit. The down side is many more people will be prone to “cheat” by lying about pet ownership. (dogs do not have social security numbers) but it is a great idea and i know it would make me very happy.
