The Other Shoe Drops?

Suddenly, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s abrupt resignation announcement might make a bit more sense.

An independent investigator has found evidence that Gov. Sarah Palin may have violated ethics laws by accepting private donations to pay her legal debts.

The report obtained by The Associated Press says Palin is securing unwarranted benefits and receiving improper gifts through the Alaska Fund Trust, set up by supporters.

An investigator for the state Personnel Board says in his July 14 report that there is probable cause to believe Palin used or attempted to use her official position for personal gain because she authorized the creation of the trust as the “official” legal defense fund.

And, if this turns out to be as full of nothing as all the other nuisance complaints, will Matthew DeLong even mention that?

This still doesn't seem enough to derail her. I'm of a mind it was the debt that is doing her in. I'm sure in her mind, if she can cash in on her celebrity, then she can wait it out a couple of years and rally the social conservatives to her side before the Iowa caucus.

It is my understanding that the any Alaskan governor is forbidden by the Alaskan Constitution to have any outside job or source of income. I wondered how Palin was going to square her book deal with the law. “Follow the money” is still the most enlightening of principles.
