So Ralph Peters Thinks the Taliban Might Do Some Good by Executing a Captured U.S. Soldier
Monday, July 20, 2009 at 10:40 am
I really can’t foresee a circumstance whereby the Taliban is ever, ever justified in executing a captured U.S. soldier. But then, I’m not military “analyst” Ralph Peters, who never met a problem that didn’t unlock itself through the use of indiscriminate violence. Via ThinkProgress, here’s Peters on Fox News contending that if captured soldier Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl is a “deserter” — and we have to wait until “the facts are in,” Peters generously allows, before drawing that wild wild wild speculative conclusion — then “I don’t care how hard it sounds, as far as I’m concerned, the Taliban can save us a lot of legal hassles and legal bills.” Watch:
I have seen absolutely nothing to suggest that Bergdahl deserted his post, but even if he did, it’s shameful to even imply that a just response is for the Taliban to kill him. Bergdahl probably didn’t realize he enlisted in the Red Army, but Peters has other ideas. Meanwhile, here’s Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton with a more sensible statement about Bergdahl:
“It’s just outrageous,” she said. “It’s a real sign of desperation and inappropriate criminal behavior on the parts of these terrorist groups, so we are going to do everything we can to get him.”

What's absolutely bizarre about Ralph Peters is how many people still claim he's the measured, thoughtful analysts he was in, say, 2000. One data point to represent this is a CSPAN interview he did with Nick Schmidle, where he comes off as erudite, witty, and measured.
Zenpundit once insisted to me that he only doles out the crazy to satisfy his employers at the NY Post, and that deep down he's actually very smart and reasonable still. I see little evidence for that in public, where he's been reduced to posturing and dick-waving.
What a truly offensive excuse for a person.

Spencer, you tool.
The kid walked away from his post without his weapon because he had gone native. Good men and women have risked their lives trying to locate and save this puke, and the pushback is coming from members of his own command who, and I'm guessing here, were cheesed off that he said that he “fell behind on a patrol.”
Because of the fact that you don't have sources who trust you anymore, you're so far out of the loop on this it isn't even funny. When are you going to give up and try to be Perez Hilton, man?
Peters is wrong–when this troop comes home, it should be straight to the brig, no ifs ands or buts. If a tribunal finds him guilty, so be it, but he should get due process for his magnificent fuck up.

[...] Both statements underscore the fundamental lack of control that the U.S. has over the situation. With little to do but speculate about the circumstances behind the kidnapping, wack jobs like Fox New’s gun-for-hire Ralph Peter get to make ludicrous claims, as Spencer Ackerman pointed out this morning: [...]

Fox’s Julie Banderas said, “Regardless of what the situation is we do not want to see any US soldier in harm’s way and we hope this guy he gets out of there. He’s an American, he’s one of ours.” Gets out of there and what, faces an Army firing squad? Apparently you and this Banderas woman think soldiers shouldn’t be in harm’s way, and that it’s okay to desert the armed forces, because, after all, “he’s an American, he’s one of us.”

This guy should be fired and traded to the Taliban for Bergdahl. There is a related post at http://iamsoannoyed.com/?page_id=588

This young soldier has family. Peters is a nut and not very American.
Who is he to judge this soldier. This is what this poor soldiers family needs to hear.
Can't believe someone who is like this and say such nasty things is a Lt Col.
Shame on you Ralph Peters. Go crawl back under your rock and stop saying such
ugly things when you don't have clue what you are talking about.
I pray this poor soldiers is freed and gets to go back to his unit and goes home to
his family. By way Peters you think you are so smart why don't you help find him.
Oh I forget you would not want to do that. You are a sad person and stay off the TV
spilling such garbage.

If Peter's military sources are really whispering such disparaging comments about Bergdahl. It makes me wonder about military claims that they are doing everything in their power to effect his safe return.

lt col ralph peters is a “cold hearted ass”. If it were his grandson would he have the coldness to say the same words? He doesn't know the circumstances surrounding Bowe's capture, it could be that poor young man snapped under the duress of being in the war, not all humans are equal in their stress levels. I pray for bowe's safe release, and when it happens I would like to give him a chance to speak a few words to that dumb ass who thinks that his comment did anything but anger americans… Thanks for being on our side RALPHY
