I have lived in Arizona since 1996--and I can't tell you a thing McCain has done for the state. Actually, he has been running for President the whole time. Not only has he not helped--he has added to the mining and Native American woe. Last year, he introduced a bill last year that would give away a culturally sacred oak grove--it's huge and right in the middle of Arizona--and also potentially destroy Apache Leap. In the 1860's, when the Calvary were chasing the Apaches, seventy-five warriors leaped to freedom rather than be captured. We gave Custer a National Monument--this site deserves the same status.

It's a shame McCain isn't being more vocal about protecting the Grand Canyon. Mining is notorious for its impacts on wilderness, wildlife and water quality. Mines should never be located next to national parks. And we shouldn't be promoting nuclear energy as a solution to our energy problems. Nuclear energy not only drives up demand for harmful uranium mining, but puts communities at risk with the waste products. If McCain is serious about establishing himself as a Republican AND dedicated environmentalist, he'd better speak up and stop uranium mining near this amazing American treasure.
