For one, I fully understand what Scheuer was trying to say and totally agree with him also. He was also interviewed on this at antiwar.com
The ridiculous assumptions made here are so laughable, if it was not so serious. Scheuer is saying a foreign-policy of non-interventionism is the only real thing that will make the US safer. Paul has also said - like Cheney - that the US is now more vulnerable and at higher risk than before, but for different reasons. Scheuer and Paul see clearly based on the blowback reality (it is not a theory, but simply reality if you put ourself in the shoes of others) that the US is more vulnerable now because of no retreat in Iraq and expansion of the war in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Obama's Cairo speech only bought some time...they will look at his actions and if he continues the Af-Pak war (0and possibly attack another country (Iran, Syria etc.)) the Wahabi Muslims would be able to recruit a lot of people and prepare for a major attack on the US. The torturing is going on in Afghanistan and the US MSM is not reporting on it, and not criticizing it.

Scheuer knows full well what these people are planning and could be planning and he probably has info that they plan to invade the US via the Southern border - that is not protected -, with only a few people and massive explosives, or it could also be with bioweapons etc. etc. and then a major attack can take place. Scheuer has no partypolitical agenda with this. He gave Clinton 8-10 times chance to take out Osama Bin laden, yet Clinton did nothing. So larrys you are totally WRONG about blaming OBL's not captured or killed on Scheuer!, you should blame both Clinton and Bush for that. Under Bush there was one chance at Tora Bora, yet Bush stopped that short and went on to attack Iraq. Scheuer resigned as he became so fed up with the incompetancy and naivity of both Clinton and Bush. He was and will always be strong against the neocons and interventionists in BOTH parties.

He does not even describe himself as a libertarian, so I do not know how brendanm can say he wants an attack with a political ideal in mind. Americans may ambrace libertarianism out of the failings of the economic interventions rather. Scheuer's sole role is that of security, and he is saying you have to defend and guard yourself in any case, and all the more if you do not stop the intervention!

Well, his entire philosophy is pretty deranged, but the point of the phrase is that Scheuer is a "Paultard" who is "deranged," not that Ron Paul or his supporters are necessarily deranged (although they are). Off the top of my head, I can't think of anything along the lines of hoping for a mass-casualty event in a large American city from the Dr. Congressman, but I'll get back to you.

No, Clarke said his comment the RIGHT WAY. If Scheuer had said his comment like Clark did, it would have been received well. Besides, the fact that Osama is still out there is a slap in the face to Scheuer. Scheuer was the man in charge of the Bin Laden unit whose job it was to CAPTURE him. Why is he he even mentioning Bin Laden? He's still free because of Scheuer! Personally, I think OBL is dead and he's been used as a government boogeyman ever since.
