Mike Pence Pushing for an Iran Resolution

The third-ranking Republican in the House, who had been concentrating on a campaign against cap-and-trade legislation, has swiftly become one of the most vocal critics of the White House’s response to the Iranian protests. Pence told CBS News that “It is appropriate for the leader of the free world at this time to speak a word of encouragement to those dissidents in the street” and is coming out shortly with a resolution of support for the “dissidents.”

It will express its concern regarding the reported irregularities of the presidential election of 12 June, 2009. It will condemn the violence against demonstrators by pro-government militia in Tehran in the wake of the elections. It will affirm our belief in the universality of individual rights and the importance of democratic and fair elections. And lastly, and most importantly, it will express the support of the American people for all Iranian citizens who struggle for freedom, civil liberties and the protection of the rule of law.

I asked Pence’s office for the text as soon as it’s ready and am interested to know who’s co-sponsoring it. This is a more starkly political resolution than it might have been if a less prominent partisan had introduced it.

Obama's response to the Iranian situation was just right. He demonstrated concern for the events marring the election and support for everyone's rights (i.e. Moussawi's supporters) while not taking a distinctly partisan stance. It would be counterproductive to do anything which could be seen as oppositional by those currently in power; they will only be more likely to crack down on the Moussawi supporters in response. People like Pence and McCain need to shut up if they can't speak with restraint.

We have in the past meddled far too much in internal Iranian politics by for example organizing a coup in 1953 against democratically-elected Mossadeq and installing the Shah, with his brutally repressive regime. The current Islamists who overthrew the shah in 1979 are understandably hypersensitive to any suggestion of meddling on our part. Like it or not, we have a much better chance of bringing some kind of peaceful resolution in the middle east if Iranian leaders, whoever that may be, are involved in the process. We can still support democratic processes there without being overtly partisan.

I must apologize for Pence. Unfortunately, I live in yahoo's district and have been unsuccessful in trying to vote the man out. If you try contacting this man's office for support on a bill, you will get absolutely no response!! His staff won't even send an apologetic dissenting e-mail. He has been great in replacing the good paying jobs, albeit they were few in number, with lots of jobs created by small businesses. Namely, the fast food industry which pays federal minimum wage, has no benefits, and no retirement. Thanks Mike! That's just what our district needs. Of course he voted against raising the federal minimum wage. As a matter of fact, his voting record indicates he could care less about working families. Nonetheless, we have to help those struggling small businesses or however that mantra goes. What a great rep! Now this! The man contradicted himself in his interview with Blitzer on CNN in regards to meddling in another country's affair. Common sense dictates the ouster of one political leader does not guarantee that the other leader coming in will be any less of a tyrant. As a matter of fact, the leader coming in could use what Mr. Pence is proposing as future propaganda. Whatever happened to Teddy's, “Speak softly, but carry a big stick!” In other words Mike, we have the muscle so stop mincing words and embarrassing the constituents in your district!!!
