Good article. But the phrase is "one and the same", NOT "one in the same".

It’s disturbing to think that the media puts a monetary value on who governs our country. My opinion is that the media should provide all candidates a specific and equal amount of free exposure. For most part that would greatly reduce the need for millions of dollars in corporate campaign donations.

Silence Dogood

topic view
http://www.gordonforpagovernor.com/Communicatio...

This bill wouldn't outlaw lobbying.
You could still hire a lobbyist to promote your concerns and interests.
Good or bad, that would still be a situation where your ability to pay enhances your ability to be heard.
The difference is that there would no longer be implicit financial incentive for the congress to conform to views the lobbyists present, schedule time to meet with them, or care at all about the issue.

Maybe if congress could spend less time fundraising they would have time to actually read the bills before they vote on them.

The whole concept behind free speech is to give everyone an equal voice, but the way it works now people (and corporations) with more money get more of a voice than those with less, which clearly violates the intention of free speech. In the same way that yelling fire spuriously in a crowded movie theater creates an unacceptable risk for the public, the speech/money argument creates the opportunity for disaster in the form of corruption.

Public financing is a great idea, but the bigger problem is the lobbyist system. We need to have all communication with lobbyists be part of the public record. Private influence creates corruption. Also corporations are not people, and they should not be given a voice in government. Corporations need to be forbidden from using money for politcal purposes, either in direct contributions to campaigns or in financing political organizations.

I hope that this bill gains traction. This more than anything will put a stop to the nonsense that goes in Washington. But let's not stop there. Let this legislation be applied at the state and local level as well. It should however, be taken out of the congress's hands and voted on by the people. We all know that there are not enough federal and state politicians with the courage to take this issue on. God bless Sen Durbin for trying though.
