(Something Like) Democracy in Iran?
Wednesday, June 03, 2009 at 11:37 am
I don’t remotely have enough knowledge about the forthcoming Iranian presidential election — and after so many misforecast assessments over so many years, I’m dubious that anyone here in the United States really does — but I would really like every word of this Andrew Sullivan post to be true.
Ahmadinejad has discredited himself in the eyes of many Iranians. They are looking for change they can believe in. This is the target audience for Obama this Thursday. He needs to reach out to the democratic forces in that country and remind them that America is their ally.
To be able to say to the Iranian people that an American hand is outstretched to them if they’re willing to show that their corrupt leadership — which has remained relatively obstinate while official American attitudes to Iran are changing – doesn’t speak for them would be a great thing. It would be arrogant and deluded to believe that U.S. posture to Iran would be determinative of an Iranian election. But the Obama administration can help remove a demagogic pretext for repression, and that’s part of what tomorrow’s Cairo speech is about.

Any bets as to how long it takes the GOP, AIPAC, the Mossad, and the current Israeli government to attempt to screw up this seemingly good news.

What evidence is there that the Iranian leadership is corrupt? In fact, Ahmadinejad has proven to be very modest in his personal life and not corrupt at all. His biggest problems are his big mouth and his extreme religiosity.

Speeches are nice. But actions are better. Let's hope both sides act in a more reasonable manner.

come on now we all know who's really in control of iran. The Supreme Ayatollah has total command. The president is really a puppet for the Ayatollah. Whoever wins it won't change anything in terms of relations with the West

I don't think that presents the whole picture. Overtures have been made in the past, and we have seen cooperation and better relations. It would be politically easier for “the west” to open relations with Iran if it had a less inflammatory president.

I find it very disturbing that Obama is trying to befriend our enemies and is such a sell-out that he is willing to betray God and Jesus Christ so to acknowledge the Muslim religion to the point that he seems to embrace it even more so than he does God and Jesus Christ. God's wrath will be upon our country as a result of his actions. I can only hope that Jesus Christ appears and the rapture of the Church takes place before that happens.

Of course, 'something like Democracy' in Iran would require gays and whores not being stoned to death…
I'm sure the Democrats will ignore this completely if the Arabs will also!
