Sarah Palin on Abortion Clinic Murders

The Republican governor of Alaska hasn’t reacted to the murder of abortion doctor George Tiller, but during the 2008 campaign she did get a chance to discuss whether abortion clinic attackers were “terrorists” and decided to compare them to Bill Ayers.

There is no question that Bill Ayers via his own admittance was one who sought to destroy our U.S. Capitol and our Pentagon — that is a domestic terrorist. There’s no question there. Now, others who would want to engage in harming innocent Americans or facilities, that, it would be unacceptable — I don’t know if you could use the word terrorist, but it’s unacceptable and it would not be condoned, of course, on our watch.

Abortion clinic attacks have often, controversially, been defined as terrorism because the violence they inflict has chilling effects: there’s no question that there are fewer abortion practices than there would be if doctors were not afraid of being murdered. The Weather Underground’s terrorism was of a different sort — they were feared, but they bombed buildings, not people, and they had no chilling effect on policy. Palin seems to define “terrorism” as an attack on the government or on the institutions of government.

Sarah Palin, as elegant a speaker as a deer in the headlights.

The Weather Underground bombed buildings, not people? Tell that the wounded and dead policemen they left in their wake. When was the last abortion doctor killed? 1998, 11 years ago, hardly a rash of killings. In the last 36 years how many have their been,? 4 including Tiller.

On February 16, 1970, a bomb exploded at a San Francisco, California, Police Department substation, fatally wounding Sergeant Brian McDonnell. McDonnell died of his wounds two days later. A second officer, Robert Fogarty was partially blinded by the bomb’s shrapnel. Although the case has never officially been solved, members of the Weather Underground, including Bill Ayers and his wife, Bernardine Dohrn, were prime suspects.

On October 20, 1981, several members of the Weather Underground undertook the robbery of a bank to finance their terrorist activities. During the robbery the group murdered an armored car guard and two members of the Nyack, New York, Police Department – Officer Waverly Brown and Sergeant Edward O’Grady,. a Vietnam War veteran. Unlike with Sergeant McDonnell’s murder, this case was quickly solved and several members of the group were sentenced to lengthy prison terms.

But by Palin's own use of the word “terrorists” to describe Islamic extremists who bomb and kill other Iraqis, it stands to reason that those Americans that also bomb and kill other Americans , whether in U.S. government institutions or not, would also then be terrorists. They are using terror to make a statement. It's not just standard “murder”. There is an agenda involved.

No, Palin is defining terrorism the way it is defined by Merriam-Webster.

Terrorism – the unlawful use or threat of violence esp. against the state or the public as a politically motivated means of attack or coercion

Even if the killing of Tiller were perpetrated by means of a clinic bombing it wouldn't be terrorism in and of itself. It is only terrorism, according to the commonly used definition, if it was an act that was designed to cause terror in the general public to effect a political change. Clinic bombings, while wrong, are not terrorist attacks under the common definition of the term.

It amazes me that Palin, who chose life for her Down Syndrome child when 90% are aborted, is vilified and George Tiller, who is on audio recording saying he killed 10,000 babies between 24 and 36 weeks gestation, is called a hero.

Just as there is no excuse for the person who murdered George Tiller in cold blood, there is no excuse, given today's technology that has shown beyond all doubt when life begins, for anyone to fail to condemn the acts of George Tiller and call them what they truly are. Murder.

greg,
The facts you quoted about abortion violence appear to be incomplete.

In the U.S., violence directed toward abortion providers has killed at least 9 people, including 5 doctors, 2 clinic employees, a security guard, and a clinic escort.

According to statistics gathered by the National Abortion Federation (NAF), an organization of abortion providers, since 1977 in the United States and Canada, there have been 17 attempted murders, 383 death threats, 153 incidents of assault or battery, and 3 kidnappings committed against abortion providers.

According to NAF, since 1977 in the United States and Canada, property crimes committed against abortion providers have included 41 bombings, 173 arsons, 91 attempted bombings or arsons, 619 bomb threats, 1630 incidents of trespassing, 1264 incidents of vandalism, and 100 attacks with butyric acid (“stink bombs”).

By the way, Ayers responded in December 2008, after Obama's election victory, in an op-ed piece in The New York Times:

We did carry out symbolic acts of extreme vandalism directed at monuments to war and racism, and the attacks on property, never on people, were meant to respect human life and convey outrage and determination to end the Vietnam war. … The responsibility for the risks we posed to others in some of our most extreme actions in those underground years never leaves my thoughts for long.

When we read Inherit the Wind in English class, I was under the impression that the clay-eaters lost and these people lost whatever influence they had when the Good Lord mercifully busted William Jennings Bryan's belly. My mistake.

Your timing is unfortunate, David. Gov.Palin released a statement at 8:00 AM this morning:

*
“I feel sorrow for the Tiller family. I respect the sanctity of life and the tragedy that took place today in Kansas clearly violates respect for life. This murder also damages the positive message of life, for the unborn, and for those living. Ask yourself, 'What will those who have not yet decided personally where they stand on this issue take away from today's event in Kansas?'

Regardless of my strong objection to Dr. Tiller's abortion practices, violence is never an answer in advancing the pro-life message.”

Pro-lifers are terrorists and there is no ifs, ands, or buts about it. They are acting by use of force to coerce other people to change their activities and putting lives at risk not only directly through their violence, harrassment, and threatening to the point of psychotic behavior, but by limiting or denying women access to a procedure that is sometimes sadly necessary and interfering with patient rights and privacy.
The delusional nature of the allegedly pro-life movement, which has made itself known through murder, mayhem, and maiming, includes not only a bizarre cult of foetus worshippers and zygote fetishists, it includes profiteering sociopaths like Randall Terry who have become wealthy from riding this issue. These degenerates act like abortion gets people high, the way they talk about it, or that it is their business to poke in on a woman's (and only a woman's) reproductive health choices, like women are brooder sows for cranking out pups and have no value outside their reproductive ability. Like the gay haters, the way the “pro-lifer” talks about abortion makes it sound like some hedonistic pleasure that they themselves can barely resist.
The sick “pro-life” fanatic wants the woman with a dead baby inside her to die as a testament to their perverted faith, rather than have the procedure that would save her life and let her perhaps safely have another child later. The “pro-lifer” is so deluded as to think that abortion is genocide but the Octo-mom and Jon and Kate Plus 8 have not aborted thousands of zygotes and embryos (Snowflakes? Eesh.) to birth their abnormally large broods. This gang of thuggish Gladys Kravitz busybodies is making victims out of those who need compassion most, those who are making painful choices in difficult circumstances, and these foetus-happy lunatics are getting a thrill out of their rage and victimization, a kind of self-righteous beat-off 0rgy with easy to abuse victims. MYOFB, you murderous creeps, go back to cheerleading torture and endless war.

Was that 8:00 a.m. Alaska time or EDT? If the former, it was after Mr. Weigel's post.

What a rational argument you make. I can't think of ANYONE who isn't already on your side who would be swayed by your rant. Why do some people think that by being asses they can score points. You are a loon, dude. At some level, you know it. You have NO control over your emotions, which leads you to come off as being unhinged. And you have the nerve to call others psychotic.

You choose to filter the facts to fit in with what you want them to be, leaving out most of the picture. OF course, by doing this, you can feel more comfortable with the knowledge that you condone the murder of babies. That has to bother you at least a little, hence your need to portray the “enemy” in as negative way as possible. Many pro-lifers don't fit into the narrow stereotype that you have cast them in. To acknowledge that would cause some inner conflict, though, so it's safer for your sanity to just ignore that possibility.

You can compare someone's facial expression to a deer in the headlights. You can also compare her speaking ability to this-if you're an idiot.

this is america, not canada. and there is a big difference between unstable individuals killing doctors within specific field and bill ayers and his ilk who targeted govt buildings and had the possiblity of killing thousands.
