Anchorage Bar Palin Liveblogging

ANCHORAGE — I’m here at Humpy’s bar on 6th Street in downtown Anchorage, Alaska getting ready to watch hometown governor Sarah Palin introduce herself to the national stage.

6:30pm — “I hope they turn it on…” says woman behind me. And the TV is on.

It’s a friendly crowd here. I just heard someone say she hopes Palin does well. And now I heard “Oh no.” to Palin accepting the nomination.

Winning an election over a war line gets a — “You can skip that line, I’m tired of that” from the local who just sat at my table.

6:32pm — Middle initial S, see, they do know each other!

6:36pm — USA! USA!

We’re going to be here forever if she’s going through all her kids, local quips.

6:38pm — Every woman can walk through every door of opportunity.

6:40pm — The people who just sat at my table are from Sacramento. I asked them to move.

6:41pm — First hockey mom reference. I’ll be honest, I have an Alaska pale ale right here…

6:42pm — Small town mayor is like being a community organizer, “except you have actual responsibilities.” Bar says “woa” in unison.

“I’m not a member of the political establishment. I’ve learned quickly these last few days that if you aren’t part of the Washington media then some of the media consider you unqualified for that reason alone.”

I’m going to serve the people of this country — not the elite media. Someone just asked me if I’m elite media. I said I think we’re more middle class here at TWI.

6:48pm: We shook things up. We put the government back on the side of the people.

She put the mayor’s luxury jet on ebay. Crowd goes wild.

6:50pm: “abuses of earmarks.” Palin has $200 million in earmark requests for next year.

6:52pm: “take it from a gal who knows the North Slope of Alaska” — convention attendees look ready to start drilling right now.

6:54pm: Takes a swing at Obama. Listening to him speak, this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single…reform.

Woa..Oooh. Woa. (Alaska bar on Obama only using “victory” for his own campaign.

6:57pm: Palin wants to expand Gitmo. I think.

“Congress spends too much money” (where could it all be going…)

6:58pm: My sister Heather and her husband just opened a service station…how are they going to be better off if taxes go up?

“In politics there are some candidates who promote to change to promote their careers….then there are some candidates like John McCain who promote their careers through change.”

People in the bar who are still watching this are laughing.

7:01pm: “We’ve chosen the right man.”

7:02pm: There is only one man in this election that has ever really fought for you. Bar is back on her side.

7:07pm: Five minutes on McCain’s POW record. The longest she’s spent on any topic so far.

Palin is really going after Obama here. If character is the measure is the theme…hope..change…join our cause.

Really?

Someone just pointed out she threw out some zingers. But now the bar has flipped back to a Bob Dylan video and ESPN.

What about the car wash that the Palins had to give up because they wouldn't pay taxes or fees or something?

it was an investment, usually when somenone feels that when an investment isnt making the money one thought it would, then they dont pay the corporation fees as they are discontinuing the business, maybe the other 80% owners were respnsible for that part…you are looking for problems…acknowledge the good..dont turn a blind eye to the bad just see it for what it is and evaluate importances appropriately….no one is perfect under scrutiny and least of all biased scrutiny

I was most struck by her coldness. She read the speech very well, great timing but there was absolutely no humanity detectable to me. It seemed very strange for a mother of 5. I could not even see affection for her children. Other candidates in such a situation usually seem to “melt” when their families show up. I think she is heartless and that is scary.
