Palin on Earmarks: ‘We Did Well!!!’

I am by no means a Palin fan; I believe what she has done is not only degrading to women (anyone who says her gender had no effect on her being chosen is fooling themselves) but just as, if not more, insulting to any American than McCain. However, the reason I hold them in such high disdain is their dirty tricks and flat-out dishonest politics, and this is bordering on something I would expect to see from their camp. This is simply money well spent on improving a community in the places that need it; that's what government spending is supposed to do.

How is it earmark? This is budget report for city projects. Great job to design a headline like this! You did well.

A person that would stand before millions and totally distort who she is and
what she stands for is about as scary as they get.

the Iraq war and supports the new pipe lines, tries to have books banned
from libraries, cuts substantial funding for disadvantaged children, wants
religion back in schools, fires anyone who disagrees with or does not obey'

does not support birth control or sex education in schools, gives bounties
to those who hunt wolves, bears from helicopters and airplanes (for one

In reference to the person who says that some comments here that people are trying to equate earmarks to pork spending. Where did we all get that idea? The Republican party that's were - How many times have Republican's used the word "earmark" as a big dirty smear? A heck of a lot of time.

You're right - earmarks aren't necessarily pork spending - but if Sarah is going to say she is against the "evil earmarks," she's a hypocrite. If she was saying that she won't support spending that is wasteful and inefficient, then maybe she'd have a point. She should starting thinking (if she can).

Gee, it looks like the projects were largely public works/infrastructure improvements. What a crime. Many if not most municipalities are in dire need of infrastructure repair, maintenance and improvement. Just look at the east coast. Kudos to the then-mayor for understanding this and knowing how to get things done. It seems like you want to equate "earmarks" with pork. Repairing and improving infrastructure creates American jobs that cannot be exported and is a far cry from pork such as studying bear shit or some of the other infamous projects.

The issue is not whether earmarks are good or bad, appropriate or inappropriate. The issue is whether or not Palin is really who she says claims to be. She claims to be a reformer and says that ending Earmarks is proof that she is a reformer. This is clearly a lie.

There is a similar issues regarding her having "traditional family values". I for one do not care if a woman works or doesn't work, has a nanny or doesn't have one. It doesn't matter to me. But, I would think someone with "traditional family values" would want to stay at home with their infant child, or at least want to take a lesser role at work so that they can spend more time with their infant child. And, if someone wants to wear the moniker of "hockey mom", then her skills at being a mother should be under review.

Based on what I've seen and heard so far, either she's lying or delusional.

It's not that she went after earmarks, it's that she's being packaged as an anti-earmark reformer---a complete falsehood.

In fact, McCain, and Senator William Proxmire before him, whose act he sort of stole, often demonstrates the rule that ome man's earmark is another man's vitally important program: McCain, I hazily remember, labeled some breast cancer programs "pork" which Bush, running against him, made much of. That wasn't entirely fair either, because McCain had voted for other breast cancer programs, but that's politics the way Bush was playing them----using the Rove guys that McCain is using now.

The GOP's mantra os "small government" is just a con job they bring up each election season. It dupes the ignorant into voting for them. The Federal Government grew far less under Clitnon/Gore than it has under Bush/Cheney. But when did facts matter to the GOP?

So, let me see. The tax payers sent over $1 million to Wasilla, while the state government gave every citizen $1,200 and has the largest surplus of the other 49 states? What is wrong with this picture?

Earmarks are a way for *elected* government officials to direct spending. If we got rid of earmarks, the money would simply continue along to the next branch of government- where the *unelected* executive branch officials (HHS, Interior, Homeland Security, etc) decide how the money is spent.

It is asinine to conclude that Palin is in the wrong for requesting tax dollars sent to DC from Wasilla be returned.

Unelected people should decide the details of spending in terms of particular projects. Otherwise, spending becomes based on media perception and winning people the vote, instead of spending the money effectively over the whole state/country in order to benefit the most people. Every cent that is spent on useless PR jobs like pedestrian paving is a cent that is not being spent on armor for the military, hospital funding, emergency services maintenance, scientific research, and a host of other more important things.

The value of a human life, used to calculate spending on medical care, is 50k dollars per year. So these paving projects cost about 30 years of people's lives in total, around the country. That's why earmarks are wrong.

Yes, Palin is in the wrong for requesting tax dollars sent to DC should be returned to Wasilla, just as it is wrong for every community that thinks all of its tax dollars should be spent locally. The quality of a community's infrastructure should correlate to its needs, not the clout of its representatives.

Wasilla gets far more tax dollars back than it ever sends.
It's asinine for Palin to say she opposed earmarks when she clearly didn't.
